Shed not for her the bitter tear Nor give the heart to vain regret Tis but the casket that lies here, The gem that filled it Sparkles yet

... I dont know where this article got some of its information- the Seminole hard rock in Hollywood has a very busy poker room and hosts WPT events.

Poker rooms have more competition in places like Florida then just casinos alone because of all the peri-mutual locations. I dont think poker is hurting at all, at least not in any significant way. Also people still learn online as plenty of sites still exist where you can learn - just US citizens cant use money. (most of them anyhow)- I think if EVERYONE could gamble online this would hurt poker rooms more then not being able to. A lot of people would forgo the drives to make money on the computer instead.

Poker has natural declines as does anything else when the economy is bad- and also like other things that are recent booms- some people just learn that they suck at it and cant make money and don't play as much (if at all anymore).

Im not putting too much weight on this article- outside of the fact that like everything else- it has slowed down a bit. The texas holdem run may have started in the 90's and peaked in the 2000's but people like me have learned to play variations of poker since they were a kid- and its going to stick around in one way or another just as craps or BJ have.

There IS a domino effect, but that article misses the biggest domino.

The poker boom got a big push with Moneymaker's Cinderella story. They got that part right.

But the poker bubble was starting to burst, or at least reach the saturation point, before Black Friday.

The biggest effect that Black Friday had, and the huge domino that the article missed, was the withdrawal of online poker's advertising backing of poker on TV. And THAT has the effect of causing less interest in poker, and the subsequent lack of participation in poker rooms, forcing some of the smaller rooms to close.

But they then draw a conclusion that is just incorrect. They claim that the large number of poker room closures is an indication of the decline. It's not. It's an indication of the players preferring a more active poker room.

There are PLENTY of poker rooms that are gaining popularity, and expanding to meed new demand. Where is that mentioned in the article?

In dealer school we were told that poker ebbs and flows, always has and always will. However, I do agree on the closure of online rooms has hastened some closures. Poker skills can be expensive and hard to develop without online play. Perhaps one day our government will realize poker hurts nobody and let us play easier online again.

The article had a certain theme and the fact that there are new and robust poker rooms really didn't fit in well.

Closures at casinos take place for any number of reasons and often relate to particular administrative measures rather than the game itself or its general popularity.

Some people in Vegas use poker schools instead of poker rooms. Some rooms in Florida are still building attendance levels. The dog track in Bonita Springs/Naples is trying to get a two year trial period of slot machines but the Seminole tribe is resisting the notion. Statutory raises in betting limits has helped as has renewed spending on equipment and food.

Some bars have long had Texas Hold 'Em tournaments on particular weeknights and often bars have changing clientel but in general levels seem to still be at a high level.
