Fold.
Hee hee. Seriously, you should fold like 80-90% of your starting hands in Omaha hi/lo, it's quite a game.
This is a cool website for starting out, full of good beginner articles:

Use the point system if you are having trouble intuitively grasping when a hand is good:

Agreed, nut flush/Full House needed for success. There are over 16000 starting hands, because of the "2-card from the hand rule" trips and quads in the hand are bad hands. Generally speaking a hand composed of Ace with any three (AK2345) is very good as is King (KA2345). Having two low suited cards(esp. A2, A3, 23) is good as well as the AK suited. Its kind of odd, but the best hands are actually the low hands with intent of drawing the nut low str. fl. As such, you might find yourself buying in for nut low.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

In a 9-player game, there are 5447 (of the 16432) starting hand shapes which will, on average, result in some sort of a win. Of these, there are 1311 which will win at least even money.
These results were determined by simulating one million 9-player rounds where each player stayed in until the showdown.
Slashes divide ranks of differing suits. For example, A2/A3 means an Ace and 2 of one suit, and an Ace and 3 of another suit.
(To keep this post from being longer than it already is, hands returning more than zero but less than 1 are omitted, as are hands which return less than zero.)

(To keep this post from being longer than it already is, hands returning more than zero but less than 1 are omitted, as are hands which return less than zero.)

Quote: sodawaterAmazing research, JB. Thanks a lot.
One thing I noticed...
23/4A 2.640777
24/3A 2.638235
2A/34 2.635154
I take it that the different returns for these hands are totally due to random variation in the simulation? Because I can't see how these are different hands at all in terms number of wins. I guess it's easier to make a SF with 2/3 suited than 2/4 suited -- but that doesn't explain why the 2/4 suited with A/3 suited is ranked higher than the 3/4 suited with A/2 suited.
Random variation is a possibility. If I were to speculate, I would guess that it might also be due to the number of ways the Ace-low straight flushes which can be made could be counterfeited (beaten by a higher straight flush).
In the top hand, with the A4, only 235 makes the SF, but if the 6 and 7 come out too, it is beaten by 89.
In the middle hand, with the A3, only 245 makes the SF, but if the 6 comes out too, it is beaten by 78.
In the bottom hand, with the A2, only 345 makes the SF, but it is beaten by 67.
So the top hand has a lower chance of its Ace-low straight flush being counterfeited than the middle hand, and the middle hand has a lower chance of its Ace-low SF being counterfeited than the bottom hand.

In my poker days, I made quite a bit of money playing Omaha hi-lo at lower limits. You should definitely read the websites and/or books and look at the math research, but personally, I look for disgruntled hold-em players. It always seemed to me that you would get hold-em players would were getting frustrated at getting "bad" cards, or low cards. Then they hear that Omaha hi-lo is played with a split, and they figure that with the way their hands have been running, they'd at least have a chance at getting half the pot. So disgruntled, upset hold-em players were the easiest fleecing at an Omaha hi-lo table.
Of course, this was all back in the day when poker wasn't as popular as it is now and it was difficult to find an Omaha hi-lo. Perhaps now there are more expert players. But the key thing to remember is that you always want to win both sides of the pot, and thus you should only be playing hands in which you have a fair shot at winning both hi and lo. At low limit, many people will play anything with an Ace and a low card, hoping to luck into half the pot. If there are many people in a hand, the chances of you having the same low as another person rises pretty dramatically. You're better off folding than getting quartered (or worse) on a pot.
Also, if the casino offers Omaha hi-lo with a kill, jump on that game. I prefer a real kill to a modified kill, but any kill game, at low limit with sub-par players, is a winning combination.

Once you get proficient at starting hands etc the best way to make money, especially at low limit O8 is to play TAG(Tight Aggressive). Most of your opponents at the low limits are loose passive calling stations. If you play more aggressive you will get more value out of your hands but pay much less when drawing. If you are a beginner then you should basically have the nuts one way or be drawing to the nuts or else fold. It may seem boring but even playing this basic at low limits will be profitable due to the poor skill level of your opponents.
The edges at this game are bigger than most think, especially considering how poorly most people play this game.
Most people frown upon betting and raising with a naked nut low for example but there are times when you should be jamming with these hands. For example, if on the river and there are at least 3 others in the pot and you are last to act you should be raising with the naked nut low. If there are at least 4 people in the hand and you get quartered you at worst break even on this bet. Occasionally you will get 1/6 or 1/8 but it is pretty rare. Obviously use common sense, if the board is 2345X you should not be raising with just a wheel.
If in late position before the flop you should raise when you come in with almost any A2XX combination, you want to build pots in position with strong hands.
The number 1 thing people miss in these games is back to my first point, be aggressive. You need to learn what hands are pulling hands in omaha and what hands are pushing hands. Here is a good article on pushing/pulling hands, http://omaha8revealed.com/articles/omaha8/pushing-pulling-hands/
People are going to say, "how can you raise now there isn't even a flop yet?", its like card counting, when you have the edge you want more money out there, you won't always win but it is the right play. Don't be loose passive, it is a recipe for disaster in any poker game. If you are not comfortable firing in lots of bets play at a smaller limit, you can't look at the chips as money but as your tools.
If you have any specific questions fire away, I have been playing this game from low limits all the way up to pretty decent stakes for almost 10 years.

I take it you have read The Psychology of Poker Rubixxcube. I find it most excellent and would suggest it as required reading for any low-limit player.

Yeah, it is part of my vast collection of poker books. Another great read is "The Theory of Poker", it isn't game specific but discusses lots of general poker concepts very well that apply to almost all variants of poker.
High Low Split poker by Sklansky is another good book for beginners in O8, the book focuses on 2 games, Stud H/L and O/8 but is good for beginners.
I can recommend a very good poker forum for those interested in a good place for O/8 strategy and advice but I'm not sure if posting the link would violate terms on this forum. PM me if anyone is interested or mods let me know if it is ok to post link.

I consider the Rules ambiguous in this regard, which is why I have avoided linking to a Forum in a very recent post. I will consult with Wizard on this matter and give you a definitive answer in short order. I am inclined to allow it, at least pro hac vice as I have seen same done by established Members in the past without reprimand when it is contextual.
I have owned The Theory of Poker, and agree with your conclusion. However, I lent it to someone and it has not been returned. I am not upset because I think the re-read value of a book such as The Psychology of Poker is far greater. The latter is also especially good for a player who has experienced a few consecutive losing sessions because we do not lose understanding of how to play the game, or hand values, but we occasionally lose our understanding of the motivations of the other players. The re-read is good for correcting such loss.
