I have been unable to find the rules for this game, which I played many years ago and was told it is the precurser to modern black jack. It is a poker-like game that resembles blackjack, with no house. I remember it being a great deal of fun. Anybody know it?

Check out this link and see if it is your game.

Be careful when you follow the masses, the M is sometimes silent.

Thank you. That's not quite it, but it certainly has elements of the game I was taught, which was a non-casino game. I suspect that stook is a very old game and is almost as dead as Latin.
