I'm putting this in "big wins" because the man caught here probably thought he was. Winning!!!!

Quote: Niagara Falls Review March 2, 2012

A Niagara Falls man is behind bars after police say a man tried to make off with $70,000 in gaming chips from Niagara Fallsview Casino.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, a man walked into the "high roller" area of the casino on Wednesday around 12:45 p.m. and grabbed approximately $70,000 in chips from a table chip bank.

A chip bank is the tray that sits in front of a dealer at a gaming table.

"He took the chips right off the table," said Det. Sgt. Rick Davidson.

The man fled on foot but was subsequently arrested at his home following an investigation by the OPP Niagara casino enforcement unit.

Charged with theft over $5,000 is Ibrahim Eyiol, 28, of Niagara Falls.

My thoughts on this one:

1) Guy must have been one hell of a runner. Security at Fallsview is pretty tight, and just knowing the layout of the casino, he'd have had to blow past at least one security checkpoint and then through the main hall of the casino without getting stopped to get to the outside.

2) If he really "grabbed" $70,000 in chips, he must have made a swipe at the $1000 and $5000 chips. I guess I'm wrong in assuming people don't realize casinos can invalidate chips and swap out a new set almost instantly when things like this happen. This would be especially easy at Fallsview, since most of the tables don't keep anything beyond the $500 chips except the high limit pit.

I'll never understand the mentality of people who rob casinos.

Makes more sense to rob the patrons.

Do some surveillance, see who hits a big cash jackpot; then lurk until they leave, follow them and rob them after they leave the casino, e.g. at their home, or even run them off the road if the score is big enough.

But robbing a casino?

Puh-lease!

I wish the story had been that he returned to the casino later to try to ca$h in the chips and they had then busted him.
It would have been even funnier that way.

The high value chips are at the Salon Prive, which is pretty close to a side entrance to the casino. Each entrance is split into two, with an entrance and an exit side. Guards are usually more at the entrance side to get IDs. The casino would have been fairly quiet on a Wednesday night in February, so there was probably only two guards at that particular entrance.

I would estimate that if you grab the chips and made a run, it would be about 20 seconds walking from theft to entrance, probably 10 seconds with a run. So the security at the entrance was probably just getting the notification when he blew past them. You could easily do a grab and run from there and be outside in about 40 seconds through the food court.

I'm betting too that the high value chips are RFID.
