I see lots of talk on progressive betting "systems," but I don't see much on regressive betting patterns.

While I have only used this online since the minimum bet is so low, I am curious if anyone has used this in a real casino with $5 minimums for example.

I have been playing this for a few hours and am up over $100 at this point.

Table minimum is $1, I'm using perfect basic strategy (Wizard of Odds table on half of the screen) and my betting pattern is as follows:

First hand of "series" : $3
Second hand after win: $2
Third hand after win: $3
Fourth hand: $4 or $3 if I want to protect larger profits
Return to first hand $3 after losing hand

Regressing after the first bet guarantees that I win money on the series after the first winning hand. Increasing my bet by only one unit assures that I'm protecting a unit of profit with each winning hand.

With a $5 table minimum in a real casino it would be:

1st hand : $15
2nd hand : $10
3rd : $15
4th : $20 or $15 to protect larger profits

Is this a legit way to play?

As legit as any.

I'm not entirely sure what you think you're accomplishing. Sure, you'll keep the money from that first win if you lose, but it's not enough to cover that first bet, and your chances of losing straight away in your next series are just what they were. And of course, while win-loss will net you a small gain, you sacrifice a bit of your double wins. I don't think this even affects the distribution that much, which is (as you know) the only thing a betting strategy can do.
The trick to poker is learning not to beat yourself up for your mistakes too much, and certainly not too little, but just the right amount.
