Quote: BozInteresting story in the RJ. Passed this place a few times on the ride to Laughlin and often thought of stopping but never did. Also a head turner on how she married her stepson.

My wife and I stop there every time we go to Laughlin. For those not familiar it is a dump of a little bar, a diner, a post office, a gourmet room, and the airport terminal that I have never seen a plane land at. It seems to be the focus of the little town that consists of a bunch of trailers.
BTW, they still have Sneak-A-Peek poker.

Drich the casino is just a couple of slot machines at this point right? No BJ or poker tables even if they were just closed when you were there?

Yes, just slot machines. I would guess there are about 25 slot machines total.
Quote: WizardofnothingWhere there ever table games and poker?
I don't think there has been in the last 15 years that I have been stopping there.
When I was there, I saw one BJ table against a wall, with maybe something displayed on top. From a brief conversation with someone behind a counter there, my understanding was that the table hadn't been used in years, but that if I really, really wanted a chip, I might be able to convince the owner to dig one up. My impression was that perhaps it would necessitate that I offer the "right" price. I didn't follow up on that.
Quote: DocI believe that both rdw4potus and I have stopped by there hoping to get souvenir chips -- perhaps other collectors around here, too.

If that price is $1 then I'm in!
;-)

;-)
I would probably just play a slot machine. I have only ended up in this situation once before. I visited Casino White Cloud in Kansas and when I got there they had permanently replaced their live tables with E-BJ. I played the FP they gave me and then a cashier offered to sell me a chip since they still had them locked up in the vault. I happily bought one. In my mind I both visited and gambled in that casino so that satisfies me for it to be part of my collection.
A new chip is a new chip. Did you post it here? You go, you gamble there, I don't care if you have to cuddle up with the bartender's ugly cousin. Lol maybe someday, won't be able to even try and get there during spring fling won't have time.
I meant to say "go do an ugly one for the team, we'll all be proud of you". Laughing. Don't forget the chip!Quote: PokerGrinderLol maybe someday, won't be able to even try and get there during spring fling won't have time.

I have only stopped there a few times. I can't remember what limits they have on slots but now I'm curious what happens if you hit for like 4k or something like that?Quote: DRichYes, just slot machines. I would guess there are about 25 slot machines total.

I never really payed attention to the denoms other than they have nickel and quarter machines that still dispense coin. There may be a couple of $1 games in the bar but I am not sure. I would be surprised if there was anything newer than 15 years old in there.
At the bar they had $0.25 6/5 JOB that dispensed coins. It was one where you had to hit "Max Bet" every game.
There were a few very old looking slot machines. Didn't look at the slots much if at all. Cal Nev Ari didn't have a players club or anything like that. No promotions from what the lady in there told me.
It was very late at night / early morning when I was there, no people except the one bartender lady. I can't imagine that place getting too busy or making much if any money. It seemed like a sad little place. The tiny shack doubled as a post office on the left side, and a restaurant on the right side / back area, with a bar smack dab in the middle.
Cool place to stop for a few minutes, but don't expect anything fun or exciting.
Yesterday I just happened to be reading about this little town with its small casino. Then I saw a story on YouTube about how this town was on the market for $8,000,000. It had been on the market for $17,000,000 back in 2010.
The Casino City web site mentions that there are 16 slot machines and one poker and one blackjack table.
I got curious about the blackjack game and so I called the casino. I was told they only have 16 slot machines--no poker or blackjack tables.
On the drive from Laughlin to Vegas you will travel through Railroad Pass. Their casino also used to have SD, 3:2 blackjack. Last time I was there they had only DD with 50% pen.
Air Parks are usually quite profitable but usually require a good runway and a good restaurant. On-site fuel is optional. Just besure that all residents have Airman's Certificates and the deeds impose a levy for runway maintenance. Its important to not let non pilots have voting rights or they will vote the runway out of existence. Even a small FBO on the site is a good idea. Just remember that touch and goes need to be restricted if its a residence area.
the casino has an Unrestricted license so they can revert to being a "real" casino once key personnel of the buyer become licensed.
RV parks are often profitable but require utilities, paved pads, etc. Even that trailer park created by the owner of the brothels made far more money than Confort ever expected it would and provided him with voter clout.
Even that bar I posted about earlier that is only open on weekends and only for half the year makes a tidy profit so don't think this would not be a bargain.
The Wizard would probably go for it if it had hills and a unicycle club.
Quote: FleaStiffThe Wizard would probably go for it if it had hills and a unicycle club.
Hills are nearby. Then he could open the blackjack table and hire Angela Wyman as a dealer.
Quote: FleaStiffThe Wizard would probably go for it if it had hills and a unicycle club.
There is a good hill between there an Laughlin. However, I kind of doubt it has a thriving unicycle scene. Heck, even in Vegas, I think I am the unicycle scene.
I'd try for a recumbent then. Or arrange for a fake dispute between two different types of unicycles and let the publicity draw out those with interest in it.Quote: WizardThere is a good hill between there an Laughlin. They do offer an advantage play: FREE POPCORN
An airstrip is a value even if unpaved. Beware that "published landing pattern" does not require official FAA publishing. You put up a sign and you print it in the local pennysaver publication and it is therefore "published' This gives you Air Rights even over land that is not in the town.Quote: billryanThis should be worth more than Nipton went for. It has it's own air strip.
Note also that all they need is some water source for crops.
I'd also import some industry that makes fuel cells... they produce water.
Quote: billryanThe town also has a Coast Guard base, doesn't it?
Doesn't look like it on Google Maps.

I believe it was in Searchlight but it closed a few years ago.
But something peculiar to me is when I did a quickie web search to try to refresh the memory I don't have, I stumbled across a place advertised for sale for $230,000 (reduced from $260k), which seems like a surprisingly high asking price to me. Okay it is 3 bed 2 bath with a big extra RV garage and it works out to about $150 per sq. ft. But it's a 1979 "mobile/manufactured" place that's been plopped down pretty much as close to nowhere as someone can get and still have some utilities. So not quite what's required to become the son of Unabomber's dream hideout, but probably not real far from it. I am probably missing or misunderstanding something important about it - something that makes it different than a couple of the neighbor's places that are waiting to be yours for < $100k asking price.

EDIT: Yeah, there were some transmission towers at a little "station" maintained by the Coast Guard near Searchlight that served some kind of navigation functions as I understand it. It was closed about eight years ago, from what I read partly due to GPS technology making it redundant.

Next to the adjoining empty valley of dust on the west flank of the Earth's scar, zooming in with a satellite view on the wonderful treasure of Dead's officially designated Area to get Wilder reveals it to be comprised of some profoundly barren grey mountains upon which nothing more substantial than a scorpion could possibly ever live. No doubt a very lost, lonely & deeply sad scorpion. So my kind of quiet neighbor that won't borrow my power tools.

From Las Vegas Journal-Review, early March 2021:
The 6,000-square-foot Cal-Nev-Ari Casino property is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the day but only because it also operates as a post office. The casino and attached restaurant remain closed because of operating restrictions, according to owner Nancy Kidwell.

Did Cal-Nev-Ari ever sell a few years ago? I think they were asking $6 million.
Quote: smoothgrh'Twas for sale for $8 million and was still for sale as of 2018. No news about it being sold, so I assume it's available for the plucking.
I think the original asking price was almost twice that.
Apparently she plans on getting a new plane and flying around the world, God bless her, God help us.Quote: smoothgrhBREAKING NEWS!!! (From a week ago)
Cal-Nev-Ari is SOLD!!!
Not quite that far. Laughlin is a 25 minute driveQuote: billryanBest of luck to both the new and old owners. I'm not sure bout building multiple plants there. The nearest grocery store has to be an hours drive, and I don't believe their are any schools there.
Quote: Ace2Not quite that far. Laughlin is a 25 minute drive
There aren't any real grocery stores in Laughlin. There is a Safeway in Bullhead City and a Dollar General about a mile or two up 68 if you make a left over the bridge.
Not an hour but good forty minutes.
Quote: DRichI always wanted to fly into Cal-Nev-Ari but I never did. A friend of mine flew in for lunch. The last time I was there which was about a year ago they still had Sneak-A-Peek video poker. That is the only one I have seen in close to 20 years.
It's a great place to play old slots and video poker. They have nickel-only games, an original Reel 'Em In, and two VLC Winning Touch machines. According to a member of the slot collectors forum, only one slot repair guy in Vegas has the key chips that can reset the VLC machines after a battery swap or for other issues.

That would surprise me. All of those games were popular enough that I am sure there are key chips out there for them. I probably have some old Sigma and WMS chips in a closet somewhere.
