Introduction

There are few bigger success stories when it comes to online adoption of markets than the casino market, and that’s particularly true when it comes to the sheer number of players enjoying the pastime in the United States.

Though the act of legalizing online casino activity is a laborious one, with numerous hoops needing to be negotiated and overcome, without exception, every state that has managed to come out the other side has proven nothing short of a success.

That said, the process itself does take years to complete, and currently, the number of states that legally allow online casino action, otherwise known as iGaming, numbers just seven.

States Where Online Casino Is Legal in the US

New Jersey (November 2013)

New Jersey is correctly considered the pioneer of the U.S. iGaming market, having authorized online casinos to operate within state lines well ahead of most of the country. The Garden State quickly became the standard-bearer for legislative success in the industry, offering a blueprint for other states to follow.

Delaware (November 2013)

Though Delaware was technically the first state to legalize online gambling, beating New Jersey to the punch by a small margin, its market is significantly smaller. The state operates through a unique model where the Delaware Lottery oversees the platforms run by the state's three racinos.

Pennsylvania (July 2019)

As one of the largest states to regulate the industry, Pennsylvania has grown into a massive market for the best pa online casinos. Although legalization occurred in 2017, the careful regulatory process meant the first online casinos did not officially go live until nearly two years later.

West Virginia (July 2020)

West Virginia embraced online gaming relatively early compared to its neighbors, offering a competitive market for varied operators. Online casinos went live in the Mountain State just a few years after the successful rollout of their online sports betting platforms.

Michigan (January 2021)

Michigan instantly became a powerhouse in the online gambling world upon its launch, featuring a robust selection of operators tied to both Detroit's commercial casinos and tribal entities. When it comes to the best online casino, Michigan ranks among the biggest hits thus far, with the growth of the market in the Wolverine State proving astounding.

The state saw immediate and massive revenue numbers as soon as it opened its virtual doors to players.

Connecticut (October 2021)

Connecticut operates a duopoly model where only two major tribal operators, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, are permitted to run online casino platforms. The state launched its legal online casino market smoothly, offering a curated but high-quality experience for residents right from the start.

Rhode Island (March 2024)

Rhode Island is the most recent addition to the legal landscape, expanding its existing gaming laws to finally include online slots and table games.

The state granted Bally’s Corporation exclusive rights to operate the online market, ensuring a centralized gaming experience for users.

Where Next?

Among the many states that are aggressively seeking to join the party is New York, which many consider to be something of a hugely important market. Many believe that as and when the Big Apple welcomes iGaming within its borders, those looking to follow suit will swiftly do so.

Given the sheer amount of tax revenue that legislatures can expect to accrue, you can expect that the number of states to legalize online casinos will start to increase year on year.
