Assuming 6 decks and liberal rules, i.e dealer stands on soft 17, late surrender allowed, split 3 times, double after split, split aces once, blackjack pays 3 to 2, and the player plays basic strategy and splits and doubles the dealer tip accordingly, how much return will the dealer get for a $1 tip bet.

I think that every 7.7 (13%) hands are splits/doubles and the player wins 55% of doubles. If this is the case I'm guessing the dealer will get about $1.14 dollars for each original $1 tip bet.

I'm interested to see what you come up with for this because years ago I was told it was better to drop the tip but because of splits and doubles (overcoming the house edge) I thought it was better to play it.

How about a craps line bet? When you get odds too it's better to play it.

cheers
Tony

If the dealer knows that if the player will double the dealer bet as well as his original bet (on splits or doubles), then that raises the dealer's average bet from $1 to $1.14. So of course, he should play it rather than drop it under these circumstances.

It's true that doubles win more than 50% of the time, but that isn't true with some splits---for example, split 8's vs. a 10 will lose more than it wins.

It's m understanding that in most casinos, it's up to the player, not the dealer, whether to make a dealer bet or a direct dropped tip.

So what's the point of the question?

I preffer to give the dealer a striaght tip. Thus far none has asked me to bet their tip instead, but if one did I'd oblige. I figure they can also gamble their money on their own time.

I was going to answer that, but I think the question is actually, "What is the correct play to maximize the value of the tip?" Sort of hypothetical.

Here in PA, where the dealers aren't allowed to indicate what they prefer, I just ask if they like chances or sure things. That way it's just an innocent question.

Always going to be better for a dealer to bet rather than drop a toke into the tokebox. Even if the dealer has personal views and would rather you give him a "dealer hand in" instead of making a bet for him, he knows its best to have a bet active.
If a gambler sees a dealer being conservative and not placing anything at risk, how long do you think those toke bets will continue?
The gambler likes the dealer to be gambling along with him ... and that psychological state is profitable for the dealer. Even if the Bird in the Hand feelings of the dealers are strong, the dealers usually know its better to encourage a toke bet than a dealer hand in.

You could always put an extra chip on top of your bet, and just keep handing over the winnings as tips, in places where they cant let it ride.

I always bet for the dealer. It is more enjoyable for me that way. Whenever I am leaving a table, I place a bet on another players hand for the dealer, and walk away and never know the result. I am not sure why I do it that way, but I like it.
