Guitar Center, and the rock and roll band, KISS are sponsoring a sweepstakes where the winner gets a, "Dice Roll" for a chance to win a $1,000,000 (actually a 40 year annuity).

The "Dice Roll" consists of rolling four, "provided by Sponsor" dice simultaneously. The winning throw will, "have each die come to rest with the predetermined winning side face up... The winning symbols for this contest are: K-I-S-S."

There are no details about the size of the die, the number of sides on each, or the shooting surface. However, there is a clear statement that the odds of winning are: 1:1,296.

Assuming you roll four six sided dice, and that there is one winning face on each die, the odds are indeed 1 in 1,296. However, the rules state that the shooter wiil have up to five attempts. Doesn't this mean that the odds are actually 5-in-1,296, or approximately 1-in-259? I would think that the insurance company guaranteeing the annuity would have caught this error. So maybe the four die have one winning side, but are actually 30 sided rhombic triacontahedrons. Stinking KISS

The probability p of winning in one roll is 1/1296. So, losing has probability q = 1295/1296. To not win means to lose 5 times in a row. Since these rolls are independent, the probability of losing 5 in a row is q^5.

So, the probability of winning on one or more rolls is:

1 - q^5 = 0.00385207554

Note that 1/259 = 0.00386100386
