I need to choose between Gold Spike, Golden Gate, Four Queens, El Cortez, Fitzgeralds, Gold Coast, Sun Coast or Terribles. I'm traveling alone and staying for three nights. I don't need anything too nice. Clean sheets, no roaches, and a working T.V are about all I need, but since these hotels are about the same price it would be nice to get the best one. I am on my way home to Texas after traveling for the last three months, so I don't really have to be close to the action, I just need to kill a few days because I get to LA right before Thanksgiving and plane tickets home are really expensive that weekend, I'm actually saving money by spending three nights in Vegas. Scary neighborhoods and dirty casinos don't bother me either, I've played at The Western and the bulk of my gambling has been in Shreveport. Being close to a bus stop would be nice. Also, if there is a hotel in this price range ($25) I'm missing that anyone thinks is a better bet please let me know.

If you have an American Casino Guide, you can get Gold Spike for $7.77 weekdays.

I would have made this a poll. My vote is for the Suncoast, and it isn't even close.

Do you happen to know if I can make a reservation online for Gold Spike now and then when I get to Vegas find a copy of the American Casino Guide and get the coupon, or do I need to have a coupon code or something when I make the reservation?

You can call them, mention the coupon (the "$7.77 coupon"), and they will tell u if it is good for the date(s) you need, and then buy the book, though it has come to my attention that the new guide may not have the Gold Spike coupon, so unless you can get the old 2010 one, you may be out of luck. Sorry if I steered you in the wrong direction.

Check the hotel reviews on this site. I'm sure there are reviews for Terribles, Fitzgerald's and Four Queens.

Also, consider Tuscany. It is usually comparably priced to the others listed.

Terrible's. It isn't even a close call. You can take the bus from the airport right up to the back of the property, and take the bus back to the airport from right across the street. You can get a weekday room for $20 if you have a player's card. (If you don't, I'm sure they will sign you up for one when you make the reservation so you can get the discount). Tuscany is nice, too, though their rates are generally higher (but sometimes go down to the $25 level on weekdays).

If you want to be around more stuff, I would suggest downtown, although Terrible's is within walking distance to the Strip.

Here's how I would rank your choices based on hotel quality alone:
(1) Suncoast
(2) Terrible's / Gold Coast
(3) Four Queens / El Cortez
(4) Fitzgeralds
(5) Golden Gate / Gold Spike.

If you do stay at the Gold Spike, we would like to see a review!

In the same vein, does anyone have a relative ranking for hotels based on the comfort of the beds? I've only stayed at two hotels on that list (Four Queens and Gold Coast) and the mattresses at both were rock hard. I've always had good luck with the beds at Rio, and I recall the Venetian and MGM were nice too. Sometimes you just need a good night's sleep, and it can really ruin a good vacation when you don't get it.

I've stayed at the Gate, the Queens, the Tez, GC, and Terrible's. For the same price, I would choose the Four Queens. It's dead center on Fremont Street, the rooms are decent (IMO), and the casino is somewhat nice. The games are so-so, but there are a dozen other casinos within a 10 minute walk.

Suncoast may be nice, but it's a LONG, LONG, LONG way from the Strip, Downtown, or the airport. If you don't have your own car, the taxi fares to get there, or to get from there to anywhere else, will eat up any savings you might receive.

Las Vegas is the land of cheap hotel rooms. Here's a list of others you might consider. Keep in mind that some of these have additional "resort fees":

Sahara, Circus Circus, Imperial Palace, Hooters, Excalibur, Palace/Texas/Boulder Station, Fiesta Rancho/Henderson, Vegas Club.

The El Cortez quotes $27/night for midweek hotel rooms in November. It's a perfectly decent place to stay, it has a good restaurant, and it's a five minute walk from the main bus terminal, where you can take the Deuce down the Strip if you so desire.

The Gold Spike isn't nearly as frightening as it used to be, the location is very convenient, and the rooms are surprisingly nice. That $7.77 deal will work just about any time except holidays, and the regular room rate (somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-30).

If you've played at the Western--or ever stayed there for the infamous $16/night special in the 90s--then just about any place you pick will seem like the Dubai Hilton :)

I'd stay at either of them, too if you wanted my vote... the Suncoast is nicer over all but further out of the way. This maybe exactly what you want.

Gold Spike is good for proximity to many casinos downtown, Terrible's is only real close to Hard Rock, Tuscany, or Ellis island, and a few of those are decent walks.

Bear in mind Gold Spike's table games (just BJ?) have limited hours.

Terrible's is about 2 Vegas blocks from the strip. Walking from Terrible's to Bally's is about the same distance as walking from Bally's to the north side of the Palazzo. It's not a bad walk at all.

I'd second Terribles because of its nearness to Ellis Island. That place is worth a stop for the terrific undisclosed $6.95 steak dinner deal, and it's a fun place to low-roll for a few hours. Plus, you get some free slot play just for joining the player's club.

I really like the Four Queens. Its cheap, the rooms are nice, and you're just a few yards away from 4 other casinos, and a short walk away from a few more. There's a McDonalds and a Walgreens and a liquor store right in the next block. I love staying Downtown.

Terribles, Ellis Island, and all those absolute DUMPS in the downtown cesspool....how the f*** can anyone come to LV for a few days vacation or whatever and stay or even look forward to being at shitholes like those? Have you no dignity?

My vote goes to Suncoast also. Not only are there decent clientel who go there, it's a CLEAN casino/hotel and IT'S IN A NICE PART OF TOWN! Doesn't that mean anything to any of you who look for the cheapest way out??

In the first place, those hotels are nowhere nearly as bad as JL describes. But even more importantly, as he so eloquently informs us, if you stay and play at one of those places, you will never run into JerryLogan!

Jerry, the OP said the room quality was not paramount to him - he's stayed at the WESTERN for pete's sake!?! I'd say that Terrible's or Gold Coast would be my choice - relatively convenient to all modes of transport and close enough to the strip, but off enough that he doesn't have to go near it if he doesn't want to.

With regard to all the recommendations about how close/far a hotel is to other casinos, I think these miss the point of the original post. As I read it, miles is not particularly interested in being close to action and just needs a cheap place to hole up until the lower-priced (non-Thanksgiving) air fares are available. How far you have to walk to get to Bally's just isn't a factor.

True, but a cab from the airport to the Suncoast will probably exceed the cost of a night's room. There was a post or two about Terrible's and their airport shuttle. Are there any other hotel shuttles running?

To each their own. If those dumps are your standard, great. Terribles is FULL of smoke & low lifes, and Ellis Island is riddled with cheap hookers, skanks, street bums and pimps....and it smells the part.

Even if gambling access isn't a factor, I would argue that distance to general entertainment is important. Sitting in a (relatively nice) room at the Suncoast would get pretty boring, especially by the third day. So, assuming that the OP would like to people watch or generally get out of the room/hotel without having to pay for a cab or bus, I don't see how proximity to other attractions would be irrelevant.

El Cortez has a shuttle, but I think it's only TOO the airport, not from. The Koval Ellis Island Super 8 has a shuttle to and from the airport but their rates push $40 (but free wi-fi!). That's an option not a lot of people consider, and I've heard good things. Closer to the Strip then Terrible's.

I don't rate the beds. I always have trouble sleeping in hotel rooms because of those huge comforters they use now. I get too hot. I prefer the old nylon blankets.

TERRIBLE's is a nice enough place to stay. We missed a flight when the Interstate was closed down for a bad accident, and we ended up at Terrible's. We had turned in our rental car, and they sent the shuttle bus to pick us up. My only complaint about Terrible's is that they used to have a really good breakfast buffet, and it has been significantly downgraded.

TUSCANY rooms are VERY nice, but I believe they have gone the route of adding a $20-ish resort fee, which adds up if you are looking for a good rate.

And although I don't ever plan on staying at the Super 8 at ELLIS ISLAND, we enjoy going there to play for a few hours every trip. DEFINITELY try the $ 6.95
steak dinner. I have never been disappointed with the thick sirloin.

That's good news about the Tuscany because I'm staying there next week. I'll report back. The resort fee is $10+taxes so I'll see what the final bill comes to.

As of about a year ago, internet access at Tuscany was available in the open areas and near the pool and exhibit areas. An 11.00 fee was required for internet in your room. I don't know if this new Resort Fee stuff has changed any of that.
