I'm doing some research and found Henderson is close to UNLV, and seems to be a nice place. I found that the area between UNLV and the strip are pretty bad, and should be avoided. I'm coming down with my car so distance is not too much of a factor. I'm looking to spend about $500-600, so maybe it's best I room with somebody at a house somewhere. With that being said, any members wanna offer me a room? :) I got really lucky with the current place right now off craigslist (utilities included, lowest rent in the area, nice neighborhood, great neighbors, right next to I5) but prefer not to roll the dice since there are crazies on there.
If they are at the Henderson/Green Valley campus you will prefer that area. If they are at the Cheyenne campus you wouldn't want to live in the Henderson area.
If you are going to the Henderson/Green valley campus the 89014 zip code is called Green Valley and generally considered the better part of Henderson.
The area around UNLV is slightly sketchy but that's mostly due to the student element. Similar as to what you'd find around any major college campus such as OSU, ASU, UW, etc. By no means a terrible neighborhood, and there are even some very nice neighborhoods around there.
I lived in the north central section off of craig road, a couple of miles north of The Cannery. It was ok I guess, but it was newish and felt generic. I was staying with friends, and they had a pool in the back with a few short trees, but everyone else was sporting dirt. The neighborhood had a cheap gate as so much in Vegas does, but that didn't keep the houses from getting Section 8'd.
I lived in the southwest, before you get to Summerlin, while it was still rapidly building out. When things fell apart, a lot of that area remained empty houses. Still, it was probably my second favorite area.
I've lived in Henderson a couple of time, and I liked it the best. It just had the best feel all around.
A few years back while eating dinner with a few AP/Poker Players . I mentioned to one of them I lived in the Naked City when I first got to town at age 20 without a car. He laughed and said that was nothing and that He was from some dangerous place in LA. This started a interesting debate that led to a bet between 2 of the other guys actually more of a challenge . The challenge was one guy would pay the other guy $800 a month for, four months to live in the naked city. The guy that was going to take the challenge was.... lets just say Vanilla Ice type, 29 successful and single. Stipulations were: He had to legitimately make it his home. He had to sleep there 80% of the time, He had to bring his current car (That he loved). He had to walk to at least 5 places nearby and bring at least one date home.
Challenge excepted
The very first day scouting for an apartment it was getting dark so he decided to leave. On his way out he got pulled over by the police. When he told the cop he was looking for an apartment. The cop told him to stop with the lies, warned him of STDs and tainted drugs and to stay away or he would be arrested.
Challenge ended fist day.

I second this. I think it was the Siegel suites I stayed in when I was waiting for an apartment room to be cleaned/readied. I had two instances of suspected crack heads knocking on my door. One was so high, he had forgotten what room he had just left, where he thought he'd left his phone. He wouldn't go away. Fortunately, I have a large beard and look both distinctive and possible a bit scary, so when I finally pulled back the curtain, he realized he'd made a mistake and walked away.
edit: yes, it was the siegel suites on Twain.
Quote: AxelWolfFor $350 you can rent a nice room with no more then 2 other people normally utilities included with a private bathroom in a very nice house, pool, security, parking, garage take your pick on the location. Anywhere near Tropicana and UNLV The car insurance is outrageous possibility $25 more per month. Stay away from anyplace near a weekly/monthly apt complex like Siegel suites or Harbor Islands. You can find SMALL studios (house converted) for $400 a month EVERYTHING included WIFI,cable, free laundry.I know of such a place however its not "in Henderson...OF COURSE!" If you want to be very close and fairly safe there are a ton of different apartment complexes all different price ranges on Spencer between Flamingo and Harmon I know 2 people that live in that location one walks/buses and one drives a Porsche both find it satisfactory.

$400 would be perfect. I'm living in a small studio right now and it's plenty of room for myself. I'll check out craigslist for areas I can rent by myself. I haven't found a good resource for places with roommates. Was going to try 2+2 for that.
LOL at the guy living in the hood. Growing up I lived in a low-income housing area and since I knew people at school I wouldn't get hassled, but it was a rough area. Wouldn't go out of my way to save a few bucks living in places like this again though.
