I saw for awhile now this curious “gambling” thread “What did you eat today?” So i thought of a similar thread: What did you watch today?

I start up with “The Odyssey” of Christopher Nolan. Imax image is super. But what Nolan did is DEI at its worst. It goes way beyond gross indecency. Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra (Agamenon’s wife) played by a Black actress! Aint about racism here but decency. Homer’s Odyssey is about Greeks.

The Greeks have always been Europeans. Odyssey is a well known literary work. The whole world knows it well. Why distort it? What good does it do to any underrepresented racial or ethnic groups? Cos there are also non-European actors in the cast: Indians, Arabs, even Latinos (who were created 2500 years after Homer!)

DEI is a strict Hollywood requirement to be considered for Oscars.

I have the same problem with Star Wars. A billion alien races, and the universe's savior is a blue-eyed Caucasian?

Carryover suspension of disbelief from Moses looking like Charlton Heston, when Rameses II looked like Yul Brynner?

At least watching Kurtis from Cutting Edge Engineering work on the Franna is mostly drama free. (Ignoring any suspense about the Homeless the Dog story arc, of course.)
May the cards fall in your favor.

You can't understand this? Do you ever watch movies made in China? Are you perplexed why their protagonists are always Chinese? 'How racist of them!' you must think. Does your jaw drop when you see that Bollywood always make pictures starring Indians? Do you cross your eyes when you see that movies made in Italy usually star men and women that speak Italian? A real head-scratcher, that?

Do you have a problem with Krypton's Superman? Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy? Asgard's Odin, Thor and Loki? Blue eyes and caucasians everywhere. The protagonists of Robert Heinlein's books? What about Gandalf and Aragorn and Frodo? It's a pity that those creators didn't have you to coach them on how to make a realistic and successful bit of entertainment for their audiences.

And, BTW, Star Wars doesn't show us a billion alien races, it shows us maybe dozens. Don't you loath movies where the guy that saves the world is someone who wildly exaggerates? I mean, how annoying is that?
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

And many of those races in Star Wars fought together to bring down a human-centric empire ruled by a xenophobic human...

The movie has-as of this writing-grossed $758 million at the box office. Imagine how much more it could've made over these same past 12 days if the casting director made more an attempt to mollify the feelings of white men pissed at their made up grievances...

The story features Greek gods, a human dipped in a pool of invulnerability, and a sixty-foot cyclops, yet some folks can't handle the idea that a King might marry outside of his own DNA pool.
Were the Greeks like salmon? Did they wander their world but always return home to breed?

Anyway, to get the thread back on topic, I watched two meteor showers last night.
I drove out towards Mt Kitts and found a nice dark field with no light pollution. With two separate meteor bands, the sky was quite active. Several minor sightings per minute and a real ripper every few minutes. The only drawback was that the moon was brighter than usual, which detracted from the viewing. Ajo Way is usually a ghost highway after dark. It isn't unusual to drive from Mt Kitts to Tucson without seeing another car, but there were dozens of cars parked along the route, watching the showers.
It's been about two years since I watched a meteor shower, and I was genuinely surprised at how many satellites were visible.

I can't wait to see how they treat the Iliad!

In the "new" Hollywood version, Helen isn't awarded to Paris for flattering a goddess, she's arrested by Paris outside a Target with 40 bottles of nail polish and a pair of 5XL leopard print panties with the tags pulled off in her purse. The Trojan War is a series of retaliatory drive-by shootings, and A-Killeeze drags Hecctor's body around the parking lot of a Ponderosa.

Kind of. It isn't always bad to portray the icones of a culture in a creatively different way, but care should be taken to avoid stripping them of the characteristics that make them relevant to their culture.

Otherwise it would be like casting a Japanese guy as Confucius. Or casting a Southern White guy as MLK. Or casting an Irishman from Southie as Albert DeSalvo.

Helen of Sparta is a mythological figure, and that she is colloquially known as Helen of Troy shows that her ethnicity is part of the story. Portray her with a Greek actress to show one side of the conflict, portray her with a Western Turkish (Trojan) actress to show the other side of the conflict- either portrayal would be respected.

Set the whole bloody thing on the USC campus with Fleetwood Mac showing up to play "Tusk," and that would be respected! But the fact that she is part of cultural mythology makes portraying her with someone who would have only had the role of captive slave in either Spartan, Athenian, or Trojan society is a square peg in the round hole of the Odyssey. Just stupid. Take her out of those societies and into another context where she actually could be the equivalent of a queen and we're back to a legitimate story.

Take as an example the movie "Scotland, Pa." Macbeth, but set in a working class town in southern Pennsylvania. Sure, a lot of the people who live there would be of Scottish background, distantly, that doesn't make much of a difference. But have literal Robert the Bruce show up in the movie and you have a ridiculous story, makes no sense, "just what are they trying to express with this," and nobody would like it.

“Nolan compared his approach to his sci-fi film Interstellar, explaining that looking at the ancient past is about finding the "best speculation and how can I use that to create a world" rather than sticking to a rigid historical record. His adaptation deliberately leans into contemporary psychological themes, modern vernacular, stylized casting choices, and a rationalized perspective on the gods rather than literal fidelity to Bronze Age Greece or Homer's exact text.”

Better yet, they are welcome to try and scrap up $250 million (after tax rebates) and make their own film. But, notice nobody cared when the Coens made their own version, with not a single Greek in the cast and set in the deep South.

But, white dudes need something to be mad about...

I watched "Beat the Devil."

This obscure 1953 film had absolutely everything going for it, including Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollabrigida, Peter Lorre, Robert Morley, and was directed by John Huston with a screenplay by Truman Capote. So many instantly recognizable actors in this! Yet, it was meh!

In this flick Bogart is married to Gina Lollabrigida. And they both fall in love with someone else! It's a low-budget comedy.

So did I. I'm not sure if it's new to streaming, but Al Gore's rhythm machine pushed it to the top of my list. I enjoyed it when it was on USA years ago.

I'm watching the documentary on Netflix about Sam Bateman the pervert who ran that cult where he had 22 wives 9 of them underage as young as11 years old. He is now serving two 50 year sentences. He was the successor to Warren Jeffs who is in prison for life. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I'm also watching an older TV series called Banshee and I'm finding it very entertaining. Especially the lead female character, she's so beautiful I can't take my eyes off of her.

Aint anything to do with racism. The reverse is more accurate: playing the race card as blackmail. I read going as far as Denzel Washington playin Abraham Lincoln. I sez how about Matthew McConaughey playing Martin Luther King Jr? I was talkin about decency. Odyssey is like history. Dont fake history cos tis indecent and desgusting. Write something original from scratch and do whatever you want. But dont make Linkoln a black woman or Jeez. if you want create new stories.

I did watch other Odyssey renditions. Methinks the best is by a film master Franco Rossi. Made for TV, 6 hours. Its in Italian and also a French version. Both have very good English subtitles. Great directing and acting. Also free on youtube. try them in brave.

OK I won't buy a ticket if I have to listen to this BS. You can have a movie that "leans into psychological themes" "stylized casting choices" [stylized? the style of being sneakily provocative combined with virtue signaling I guess] and no "literal fidelity" [not when virtue signaling is a priority] ....................doesn't sound like a good movie to me, knock yourself out

Have you seen The Sheriff of Cochise County? There is a robbery in L.A.; the thieves are headed to Houston. Let's set up a roadblock in Bisbee. Anytime a crime happened anywhere, it seemed like the perps were headed towards Bisbee. The show holds up pretty well for being almost seventy years old. In the final season, the Sheriff got promoted, and the title was changed to US Marshall and moved to Tucson. I love the Highway Patrol theme music. It sounds like Justice!

It's best you don't buy a ticket. They are in demand, especially for IMAX and IMAX 70mm. Leaves a seat open for someone who would actually enjoy the film for what it is and won't get their white dude perizoma all in a twist. Movie has grossed $911 million. They'll be doing just fine without your admission fee.

In other news, watched Project Hail Mary again. Fantastic film!

Go see something that advertises itself as a documentary. Why are you complaining like Nolan set you up? He didn’t promise you historical accuracy.

Oliver Stone is the first director I think of who pushed his JFK movie as the real truth. I have more of a problem with that kind of position personally. But I don’t mind that he has his own point of view. Mel Gibson had his own point of view with the “Passion of Christ.” People were upset with it, but so what.

OK I won't buy a ticket if I have to listen to this BS. You can have a movie that "leans into psychological themes" "stylized casting choices" [stylized? the style of being sneakily provocative combined with virtue signaling I guess] and no "literal fidelity" [not when virtue signaling is a priority] ....................doesn't sound like a good movie to me, knock yourself out

this belongs in DT anyway, where when some ass accuses people who see through this as a racist, you can call them out on it

The chances of my buying a ticket for that I can with great certainty say are zero. In real life I don't know even one person who saw it or has expressed an interest in seeing it.

I prefer the Iliad anyway...

I'm planning to see the Odyssey this week. Really looking forward to it.

I have always preferred The Odyssey over The Iliad. Just me, everyone is different.

I would not go to a movie theater if you bought the ticket for me and bought all my snacks. The last movie I saw in a theater was Wonder Woman and that was it for me. Sitting there with a bunch of strangers coughing and hacking and talking I said never again. Now it sounds absolutely disgusting to me being around that many strangers, God knows what diseases they have. And just the general hassle of it going to the theater parking your car, walking inside finding your seat and reversing all that to go home. I have all the entertainment I could possibly need in my right hand with my mouse. And I ain't gotta go nowhere.

Sounds like an art cinema you stumbled into, with the strangers with diseases and the mouse in the hand!

Cinema culture is indeed fully degraded, when the kinds of people and behaviors you once observed only at the so-called art cinema are now available in the legitimate. Just with a lot more violence and abuse on the screen.

All you do is go in the films last week. Usually almost no one there.

For me, the sound is often too loud. The trailers run incessently long. Small popcorn and drink is close to 15-20 dollars.

However the film never breaks now, where everyone starts yelling at the projector room guy to wake up.

When TV started getting big in the early 1950s the movie industry went insane because they thought they were going to go out of business. It's finally happening, movies are the past, they are dinosaurs and they are dying out. We have so much entertainment at home now how does anybody have time to go to a waste of time movie theater just to see something that will be in your home in a few months. Just to see it on a big screen? That was great when I was 12, I kind of outgrew it. And I'm not being a hypochondriac sitting in a big room with that many strangers is not good for you. We don't have to do that kind of stuff anymore, we've moved on with technology. In 1932 you didn't have any choices, now all you have is choices.

I’m watching Highway Patrol. It seems like this shows format was a precursor to shows like dragnet and Adam 12. It was a few years before my time I had never seen it before.

Cochise County is famous for its Wild West history. The gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place in Cochise County. Wyatt Earp and his brothers fought the Clantons. there are several movies about the event. You can find em free on the internet. Wyatt Earp, Tombstone etc.

But did you know that the Ancient Greeks were European? have you ever seen an Ancient Greek statue? there are plenty still around. They had black marble too but they used white marble to represent themselves (as gods, heroes, mortals).

And you play here that shameful racecard. I had no racist intentions in my post. I only pointed out the shameful distortion of a great work of art with qualities of history. All human races are equal amongst themselves. Authors of any race have full rights to create any work of art with representations of their choosing. but dont dare to distort history cos it cant be changed. Sure thing, history was unjust to all races. Rewriting history doesnt make it any better. the past is gone and nobody can right its wrongs.

As for Christitser Nolan, he is spineless. he badly wanted the Oscars thats why he obeyed blindly the DEI requirements imposed by Hollywood and other institutions. he should have had the guts to go for Oscar without that crappy DEI. Nolan was also cunning as Odysseus. Nole knew that the DEI would create a huge backlash. thats publicity for you. and he knows there is no bad publicity, there is only publicity. 90% of the boxoffice is the result of the DEI controversy Nole intentionally built in his Odyssey.

I just watched The Guns of Navarone (1961) for the first time.

I think there were a lot of bad movies made in the 1950s and early1960s. And I'm not a huge fan of war movies, I don't seek them out. But The Guns of Navarone is a good film. Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn and they all nailed their performances. And an ambitious plot and screenplay and it mostly delivers on them.

I thought he had wised up and was sticking to his wine business

if you ever get a chance to watch the 1991 documentary movie 'Hearts of Darkness - Apocalypse' it's very revealing about Coppola's schtick. In it he describes how even he knows it's a terrible disaster of a movie ... but since 'Apocalypse Now' was channeling hate of the Vietnam war it succeeded wildly, as tended to happen then.

Seen it 7 or eight times since the 1960s. Bits of dialog from the movie occurr to me quite often. That movie literally has everything you could ask for in a movie. Great story, top notch acting, great cinematography, excellent writing. And you couldn't find a better cast than that in 1962

I saw that this was available on Prime and easy for me to watch.

A lot of 'on location' in various casinos. A good rundown of what card-counting is about. Then whoever wrote that got booted and the protagonist switched to poker player instead of BJ player. It also changed to World Series of Poker activity, right in the face of the title of the movie... and the realism vanished. Accuracy about gambling switched to inaccuracy, including an incredible statement that betting red or black in roulette was smart gambling.

But that was the subplot. The main plot involved the injustice of the lack of prosecution of the important players in Abu Ghraib, and a dumbass kid. The actor who played the kid was told, evidently, to make us find him totally disgusting. Since I concur with the idea that this was injustice about Abu Ghraib, I stayed to the end. The ending was OK but I wanted to cheer what happened to the kid and wasn't supposed to.

I fell asleep watching a Charlie Chan. I'd been listening to it with my eyes closed for a few minutes before I dozed off. I woke up and thought the movie was still on, so I hadn't been sleeping long. After a few minutes, I realized it was an entirely different CC movie, although the plot and cast were virtually interchangeable. I found it strange that Charlie is played by a white guy, but his sons are always played by Asians. My Dad enjoyed this series, so I saw it a lot as a little kid. Every few movies, there will be a scene I vaguely remember, but they are virtually new to me.
