Well if Joss Whedon as the writer is not enough, I have never read a review that began like this

Quote: The Cabin in the Woods (review)

Absolutely genius movie. Totally brilliant. I know countless variations on the phrase “ultimate horror film” have been thrown around before. But I can’t see how any movie is more worthy of that claim than The Cabin in the Woods is. It’s not about a level of violence or gore. It’s not about clever kills. It’s about this: I don’t know how anyone can possibly make a horror movie again. Cabin renders all past and future examples of the genre superfluous. How can anyone ever top this? It seems impossible.

This sort of gushing enthusiasm for something that can't possibly be that different than what has come before is suspect in my book. Some kind of vested interest involved here? I could see maintaining that the movies is equal to some of the best horror of the past, if it is that good. If the box office doesnt soon agree I will certainly be convinced the writer is suspect, or an idiot.

As far as the writing goes, I can forgive the style, it is an attempt to imitate what she probably sounds like to listen to her. Presumably it is the Ms. Johanson listed at the top of the page? But I don't understand why "ingenius" wouldn't be substituted for "genius", even for a valley girl.

If Scream was a meta-hack-’em-up, Cabin takes five giant steps back to reveal a wider canvas, gleefully jumbling together every kind of modern horror picture, paranoid-conspiracy thrillers, Matrix-style sci-fi, and a dollop of H. P. Lovecraft. Is it scary? Not especially. But there are enough gory surprises around every bend to keep you laughing/screaming/cringing.

The movie was excellent. It's funny, scary, perplexing, shocking and highly analytic as you try and follow the references to other films and classic tales.

A total of 16 bad reviews out of 178 on rotten tomatoes.
It is decidedly not for everyone, having sold a mere 3.57 million tickets in 11 days. Interestingly the movie was filmed 3 years ago, and has been sitting in storage.

By comparison, Zac Efron's movie got 83 bad reviews out of 104 and sold 3 million tickets in 4 days.

It was ... okay.

Basically, it was better than average until the final scenes with the demons.

Decent CGI, but "full of sound and fury, sigfnifying nothing."

It would be lost on me. The last scary movie
I saw was Nightmare on Elm Street, and that
was in the 80's.

It's very much a scary movie about scary movies. Sort of like 30 Rock is about making a stupid variety show, and Community is always making references to TV sitcom and movie conventions.

Joss Whedon is also getting good advance review for The Avengers

I'm a huge fan of Whedon. I started watching
Buffy on DVD in 2004 as a total skeptic and became
a huge fan. The show had a genius behind it,
and its Whedon.

Both his father and his grandfather were TV writers. When Joss was 25 he got to write a few episodes for Roseanne and Parenthood. Unfortunately his grandfather died before he finished the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.

Joss Whedon's big movie, The Avengers opens today to rave reviews.

Snooty reviewer, A.O. SCOTT of the New York Times predictably had some harsh comments about the Avengers.

Last year Scott only gave top grade to four movies:
The Descendants (2011)
The Tree of Life (2011)
Of Gods and Men (2011)
Into Eternity (2011)

What is a little surprising is that actor Samuel L Jackson went on a twitter rampage about the critic Scott. Samuel Jackson gets some very good reviews, but he gets some bad ones. In any case he is far more famous than Scott. I am not sure why he went on a rampage against a critic over an otherwise highly praised movie.

BTW Scott also hated Cabin in the Woods.

I did see The Avengers yesterday, and Joss Whedon's writing really makes the movie. It cuts through the dreadful sense of self importance that can weigh down those movies. Robert Downey Jr. is as good or better than he was in the first Iron Man movie.

It really is a bit long at 143 minutes, but overall the movie is excellent.

Ticket sales are an estimated 47.1 million in 10 days ($373m).

Millions of tickets for 5 previous movies where characters are introduced
44.3 Iron Man
39.3 Iron Man 2
22.5 Thor

(The latest version) I thought this was quite clever, I highly enjoyed it. I actually viewed it twice. Overall, I give it a 6/10.

In a strange twist, the movie "Cabin in the Woods" was filmed three years ago. It was the first movie acting job for one young star, Chris Hemsworth. The writer of the film is Joss Whedon. After the movie was filmed it was put in a can for three years. In the meantime, Chris Hemsworth got the job playing Thor, and Joss Whedon got the job of writing and directing, "Marvel's The Avengers". The Avengers movie and Cabin in the Woods are finally released only weeks apart.
