The Wizard is participating in, (and collecting donations for) the American Lung Association's, "2012 Fight for Air Climb" fundraiser on March 3, 2012. Participants will race up the stairwell of the Stratosphere hotel's 108 story tower. Participation is limited to 400 entrants, and the racers with the top 50 times will be invited back on Sunday, March 4 to do it again without having to pass the slowpokes.

The questions for the poll are: Will the Wizard's Saturday time be good enough for a top 50, Sunday invitation? How do you predict he will fare?

Sponsor the Wizard here. He's pretty close to collecting enough for a free sweatshirt! Let's get him over the top!

No spot on the poll fot top 50. No disrespect made, buy will be a major accomplishment for Wiz to finish in top 50. Age is my criteria for decision purposes.
I was first to donate, only wish it could have been more. Any math wiz's here gonna post a line, say on first 10, first 20, first 50, 100 etc ?

In the top 10 ??? Are you serious. 1st last year was a runner ranked 10th in the world, 2nd went to 2nd. 5th in world ranking finished 3rd, 4th went to 4th and 5th was a ninja climber. Acouple finished 6th and 8th Michael and Erica Schram. 9th went to Kourtney Dexter.

That's right, 2 females in the top 10. Top 50 can be consider a milestone if the WIZ makes it that high. I will be rooting for mike from afar!

I guessed 100-199th. The half marathon report the Wiz posted indicated he is in very good shape for his age group but younger people will have a big advantage in this event. I have not done any research into the ages of previous year's finishers so I could be way off. If the event is mostly popular among people his age or older then he has a good shot for the top 50.

Climbers will climb 1455 steps which equals 108 floors! Once the climbers are in the tower core, there is no exit point unless there is a medical emergency. Because of the unique location of the climb, special considerations need to be taken before you should register.

Are you afraid of heights, suffer from vertigo or are claustrophobic? The staircases that you will climb up a majority of the time are free standing and not flush against a wall. You are ascending at a rate of approximately 15 ft in height every flight. If you are afraid of heights this is not the climb for you. If you have problems with confined spaces, this is not the climb for you.

On a sadder note there is this from 2005
A TV producer in town to film an Elvis impersonator show leaped to her death from the 109th floor of the Stratosphere last week, days after asking Elvis, "Has anyone jumped off that before?"

"She said she was a former showgirl and had put on weight. It's a terribly sad story.

How many "elite" stairclimbers do you think will participate? I think the Wizard has a good chance at the top 30 as I believe that most of the field will be composed of "recreational" folks in it just for the fun.

As a basis of comparison, I finished in the top 12% for my age and gender bracket in the half marathon. Then again, I trained very hard for that, and have only hit the stair machine twice so far for this.

I would expect at least 20 elite stair climbers to enter. Vertical racing is increasingly becoming popular. Plus it is an excuse to go to Vegas. I was gonna make the over/under at 5 in his age group.. However lack to training can be brutal on such an endeavor. I now place the over/under at 10. The true test will be on which floor does Michael grab the hand rail ???

And most of those runners will have much younger legs! The mind can only force the body so much.

I did vote 51-99 and if I am wrong I am confident he will be in the top 50. Just hard to estimate how many vertical climbers will enter this year. Certainly drew some elite runners last year and would expect even more this year.

I don't think I'm going to far out on a limb
to predict that the Wiz will complete this
faster than any of us regular / semi-regular
posters could !

So now having said that, who's interested
in giving the WIZ some competition NEXT
year ? ? ?

I'm all for competition! In fact, if anyone things they can out-climb me, then I offer the following challenge.

At the south end of the Bellagio there are escalators and stairs leading up to the casino. I would estimate about three flights. I will challenge any poster than I can do more loops in a fixed period of time, say 15 minutes. I'm open to other locations as well. When I did my Planet Hollywood review I did rotations on these stairs for about an hour early in the morning and had no problems with crowds or security.

I have a feeling he would win, but I'll take him on anyway. Another possibility is the Summerlin Hospital. They have about six flights with easy access that nobody except me seems to use on my way to my dentist's office. At least we'll be in a hospital if I have a heart attack.
