There is a new game show on ABC called lucky 13. I think I'm allowed to say that I went through two levels of auditions for the show before being rejected. However, they said they would keep me in mind for a second season. I am happy to say that I recommended a friend as a contestant, who should appear on the Aug 29 show.

The rules are pretty simple:

  1. Contestant is asked 13 true or false questions.
  2. The contestant is asked a range of how many he got right. If he is in the right range, he gets the prize shown in the table below.
  3. Contestant is also asked for an exact number of correct answers. There is a $25,000 bonus for getting this right.
  4. Answers are revealed.
  5. The host (Shaq) will make a surrender offer before the answer to the last question is revealed.

Range Pays
13 $1,000,000
10 to 12 $100,000
7 to 9 $25,000
4 to 6 $15,000
1 to 3 $5,000

Here is my analysis of the ideal range to pick according to how many you think you got correct.

Range Correct Answers
13 10.62 to 13
10 to 12 7.66 to 10.62
7 to 9 5.83 to 7.66
4 to 6 2.54 to 5.83
1 to 3 0 to 2.54

Personally, I tend to get 9 or 10. There is a fair bit of popular culture questions, which is a weak area for me. I mostly quit paying attention to that in 1988.

If I were on the show, I would almost certainly choose the 10 to 12 range.

There is an episode tonight. I'll try to transcribe some questions to post here later.

The question for the poll is what is your favorite game show?

You should add “The 1%”. It is a fairly new game show on Fox. Very good and fairly challenging towards the end.

Questions are brain teaser type questions.

They start easy and get harder as the show progresses.

Example they start with the 90% question. This question was answered correctly by 90% of the peopled pooled before the show. Then 75% question and so on until the last question which only 1% of pooled people answered correctly.

I believe they start with 100 contestants. All are ask the same question and get eliminated if they are incorrect at any point. It usually gets down to 1-3 people by the last question ( 1% question). Whoever answers correctly wins (or splits) the pot - usually around 95k.

I feel like my strategy when playing this game would be to bid 13 every time, and always take the offer.

As long as you feel your expected right answers is 10.62 or more, that is the right move.

My guesses without looking up:

1: False
2: False
3: False
4: False
5: True
6: Fasle
7: False
8: True
9: False
10: False
11: False
12: False
13: False

If those were the questions, I'd bid 13 and NOT take the surrender.

I forgot to record the official answers, but it looks like #4 is false. Sushi translates to roughly "sour rice." I got that one wrong, I must confess. I should have known the obvious translation wasn't correct.
