I thought the same as you, Mike, and was going to go with "MERRY" as my 1st word. Then I backed out and decided to go for 2/6 with a word that might imply "MERRY" ...

I don't know who decides these things, but I think once an abbreviation or acronym becomes part of the everyday vernacular, it becomes a real word.

This analysis argues that using this five-word combination means you'll almost always be able to solve the puzzle on the 6th try.

However, it's very rare that I fail anyway, and my goal is to solve more puzzles with 3 tries than with 4 or 5 or 6. (And I got it in 2 recently, two days in a row, with SLATE and THIRD, thanks to my starting word, SALET.)

We've focused much on finding the best starting word, but how about the second word? I found this tool, where you enter your starting word, and it suggests some good second words. However, it doesn't score them, and doesn't list all the best second words. For example, when I score by the letter frequency in the entire WORDLE word list, the score for the second words suggested by the tool for a starting word of SALET, in the order it suggests them, is 3122, 3317, 3122, 2844, 3034, 3182, 3203, 2617, 2843, 3280. However, I came up with ROUND by myself (3082), which beats 40% of the started words suggested by the tool.
