I have some comments about today's word � as a longtime follower of Merriam Webster's "Ask the Editor" videos on its website (www.m-w.com).

M-W's editors, as lexicographers, have argued that they include words and meanings in their dictionary because they're words that people actually use.

So a word like "antidisestablishmentarianism" isn't considered a word because nobody ever uses it in serious context.

However, a word like "literally" has a definition of "figuratively" because people literally misuse the meaning of that word all the time! I do not like that entry, but I agree with it because if someone were to look up a word, that person should be able to access the meaning of the word based on how it's used. Otherwise, sometimes we might not learn what people intend. It's not up to those who chronicle words to decide whether a word is used "correctly."

Likewise, a word like "irregardless" is a word because people, including great authors, have used it for centuries. So even if a segment of the population doesn't like the word, it's still a word.

Which brings us to slang and jargon. Slang words eventually become regular words in some cases. I recently learned that the word "parenting" wasn't used in the U.S. until the late 1950s and didn't become popular until the 1970s. And we continue to use "-ize" to verbize nouns. So we have "prioritize," which nobody questions as a word, but has been around only since 1961.

So anyway, though I also was taken aback by today's Wordle word, I'm not surprised that it's considered a word.

I haven't heard the phrase "kitty corner" in decades - IIRC, it refers to the diagonally opposite corner of, say, an intersection (e.g. MGM Grand is "kitty corner" from Excalibur)
