Lately I've been having more fun watching SmartyBot solve Smarty Pants puzzles than I am solving them myself! :)

With Puzzle #238, I noticed, on its weakest strength setting, using a random start word, SmartyBot took a full eight rows before it finally pinned down the solution.

And yet on its strongest setting, the bot was able to solve the same puzzle in just three rows, using a well-chosen probing word on Row 2.

Spoiler for Smarty Pants #238

Strength Setting 1

Strength Setting 7

Yeah, once you get caught in a common word construction, it’s easy to guess out.

Wordle is fun. But sometimes a 5 or 6 score is actually a better solve than a 2 or 3. It’s not so much when you got there, as much as how. My 3 today was pure luck.

Well, I finally finished writing the code to compare the values of the best starting word pair.

As you know, WordleBot, when it analyzes every finished puzzle, will let you know how many words, on average, remain after the starting word that was used. For example, after the starting word ADIEU, the bot will tell you, "On average, 123 possible solutions still exist after that guess." If your starting word is ROATE, the bot will inform you that, "On average, 61 possible solutions still exist after that guess."

There's always lots of comments and discussions about each player's favorite pair of starting words. Many players like to play the game by entering two words, one right after another, and then go from there, when they solve a puzzle.

While it isn't ideal to enter a pre-determined second word after the first (your best second guess depends upon the feedback received from the first guess), I was curious to know how different pairs of starting words stack up against each other. Which pair is the best?

(Again, "best" for this discussion, is the fewest average number of possible words still remaining.)

Here are the surprising results.

I really expected SALET - ROUND to be at the top of the list, or possibly CRANE - SLOTH.

Nope. Not even close.

So far, of the five dozen or so different two-word combos I've checked, SALON - TRICE is the best pair, averaging... are you ready for this... just 4.363 words remaining.

CLINT - SOARE, is the next best pair I've come across. This pair, on average, leaves just 4.369 words remaining.

Here are the results of the top 20 pairs I've looked at so far:

SALON - TRICE (4.363)
CLINT - SOARE (4.369)
CLONE - STAIR (4.503)
SLOAN - TRICE (4.533)
NOILS - TRACE (4.569)
LOINS - TRACE (4.656)
LIONS - TRACE (4.717)
COLIN - STARE (4.730)
LINOS - TRACE (4.791)
ORCIN - SALET (4.801)
SOILY - TRACE (4.857)
DRICE - SLANT (4.869)
CRATE - SOILY (4.883)
LOTIC - SNARE (4.917)
LINAC - STORE (5.008)
NICOL - STARE (5.041)
ALTER - SONIC (5.060)
CRANE - SLIPT (5.155)
CRANE - SPLIT (5.168)
------------------------
FUZZY - JAZZY (360.786)
FIZZY - FUZZY (452.246)
MUCKY - YUCKY (454.819)
DIZZY - FIZZY (535.964)

Notice the letter U doesn't make an appearance at all, in the top 20 pairs. (More proof that ADIEU, a favorite starting word by many people, just isn't all that great of a starter.)

As you can see by the last four entries, I was also interested in the absolute WORST pair of words! So far, the worst pair I've found is DIZZY - FIZZY. (The reason this pair is so bad, of course, is because you've got not just one letter Z but two working against you, and only six different letters are examined, and none of them are ETASROLN, etc.)

Also, I recently noticed that, on average, the greater the length of a word, the fewer guesses it takes to solve it!

It takes WordleBot about 3.4 rows to solve Wordle puzzles. (Length of five.)

My SmartyBot can solve Smarty Pants puzzles (length of 6) just a tad less than this.

It is currently solving puzzles that are seven letters long at about a 3.1 row average. (And this is without yet finding the best starter.)

And yet when I have it solve puzzles of just four letters in length, it takes the bot, on average, about 4.3 rows!

Of course, now this makes perfect sense after I thought about it. For example, take a simple two-letter word puzzle answer, like the word DO or HI. You're usually gonna be making a lot of guesses before you stumble onto either of those words as the answer.

For words that are just two, three, and even four letters in length, you often don't get much additional feedback when you're wrong with a guess.

Thanks for the analysis. Very fascinating.

I wonder, what the results would be if your second guess had to follow the feedback of the first guess.

Again, thanks for the original analysis.

it sounds like using salon as a starter word the bot is assuming you get all gray letters using trice as the second guess. I always use the info given to me from first word to try and get the wordle in as few guesses as possible but that's just me. Wheel of fortune bonus round gives you rstln and e. It just depends what wordle is how you do. A lot of bonus puzzles you don't get much help with those letters. Just my 2 cents
