RE: Picks Game
For that exact reason, I included my E-Mail addy in both Picks reminders PM's, including the one from Week 1. Feel free to grab my E-Mail from that PM and E-Mail your Week 3 Picks to me if you are concerned about ability to connect. Indeed, other players have availed themselves of this option.
We should be on the new servers by Week 4. When the transition is complete, the next reminder PM after that will request Picks NOT be E-Mailed.
Now, it takes just a very acceptable ~2 seconds to load pages.
Yes, and I was aware of that but I couldn't access the WOV site to read the PMs with your email addy! I have since written your email addy down, LOL. But I will also need to access the WOV site (from the Carribean) to read the lines you post on Thursdays. I think Week 4 is the timeframe I am in the Carribean, so maybe the access issues will be resolved soon enough. That is the schedule info I was seeking, thank you.
Quote: IbeatyouracesIt's been normal so far the last two days.
I have encountered some annoying delays for a few weeks, but in contrast to what IBYA posted, I found that yesterday (Sunday 9/17) was by far the worst that I have experienced. Sometimes, I could not get onto the site at all, and when I could, it took ten minutes or more to get a page to load. The site was essentially unusable from my perspective.Quote: DJTeddyBearFor a while this morning, I instantly got a plain screen that said maintenance was being performed.
Now, it takes just a very acceptable ~2 seconds to load pages.
However, today I have seen just what DJTB reported: an announcement (apparently from JB) that maintenance was being performed and that the site would return soon, followed a bit later by a site with much speedier responsiveness. I don't know what the "maintenance" consisted of, but it certainly seems to have been effective.

You made Week 1 Picks, so I'd assumed you read that PM, sorry if I'm mistaken. My lines come from:
www.vegasinsider.com
I always post the lines at some point Thursday, so if you take them down Thursday, preferably evening, they shouldn't have changed much. If you want to shoot me an E-Mail, I'll also be happy to E-Mail you the official lines until such time as this us 100% resolved.
You're welcome, sorry about all the trouble.

Can I assume the server switch will fix this problem as well?
Can't blame the site for a lack of personal preparedness. If you can't get on, have to try later or try another device. I'd go to the library if I had to to be sure and check if they worked.

Yes some visitors were getting this auto message during the migration process which was finished yesterday.

Onnsecond thought, it seems like a temporary thing. We're speedy again. :)Quote: DJTeddyBearThings a super slow again. :(
Yep, there seems to be quite an inconsistency today. I had a bear of a time making this simple post.Quote: DJTeddyBearOnnsecond thought, it seems like a temporary thing. We're speedy again. :)Quote: DJTeddyBearThings a super slow again. :(
I am no longer getting notified of new PMs, but it appeared possibly partly responsible for some slow loads, so perhaps it was disabled.
Not seeing who is currently online, either by the lit bug on the avatar or on the forum home page. Perhaps another disabled feature to speed up the load?
Speedy, but we got a couple spam posts for the first time in a while.
Coincidence?????
Quote: gordonm888And my original post was not a complaint in any case. After being denied access for 48 hours I immediately went to this thread and reported that I had been unable to log-in for 48 hours (without reading the status reports that had just been posted in the last 48 hours about the Denial of Service situation.) I was simply trying to be a "solid citizen" of the forum and report my access issue -nothing more. That's why I was astonished when Rsactuary played "helicopter mom" and posted that I should stop "berating the moderators." And I remain astonished. Forum members must certainly be allowed to post a brief note to the mods stating that they are continuing to have denial of access issues without Rsactuary playing self-appointed politeness cop.
Good attempt at re-writing history, but I'm having none of it. Let's revisit your original post, shall we?
Quote: gordonm888Yesterday (Sept 15) the delays I experienced when logging in or clicking on a thread were extremely long (>10 minutes) and this persisted all day long. I had no problems with other sites - just WOV. Obviously, I gave up on WOV that day. No sense having a site if visitors cannot log on and move around within a reasonable time.
I see nothing wrong in reporting the issues you're having as that can sometimes help narrow down the source of the issue. But if you go back to my response, you'll see that I didn't quote that part of your post. I quoted just the last sentence... "No sense having a site if visitors cannot log on and move around within a reasonable time.". In my opinion, this comment was inappropriate and a slap in the face to the administrators of this site who work so hard to keep it going on a day to day basis. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that some or most of them are doing it on a gratis basis. For you to take a swipe at them when they have indicated that they are working to resolve the problem is inappropriate and childish in my opinion. And you can call me any name you want ( water off a duck's back), but I'm happy to swoop in and defend them EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. against someone that is showing no respect or gratitude for the work they do. If you're paying a subscription every month to be here.. you have a valid point.. but I doubt that you are.
Quote: HomelessnycYou will learn quick here the rules aren't equally enforced here.

And this is nonsense.
Quote: NokTangIn case people unaware or cares, the site address www.wizardofvegas.com is down/unavailable. I only just discovered the forums were available after searching.
Its simple: go to google and do a search for wizardofvegas and click on that search result.
Dreamsomething lists it as unavailable
It has to propagate its way thru the dns server network.
Thanks to all the Green Inkers for their hard work.

1. I respect, and am personally impressed with, all of the moderators of this forum. I bear them all good will and I recognize that they have been victimized by this DDOS attack as much or more than the forum members.
2. My statement "No sense having a site if visitors cannot log on and move around within a reasonable time." is neither nasty nor mean-spirited. It is a simple truth, fairly stated in what was intended as a polite tone.
I have posted some quality material on this site in the past and thus I would prefer that this site be healthy and have a growing membership. This DDOS attack issue has persisted for weeks and I am concerned that its persistence will damage the health of the WOV forums. It would sadden me if that happened. I was expressing that concern. It is delusional for anyone to claim that I need to be a "paid subscriber" to the site in order to justify expressing a concern.
3. I have not been closely following the DDOS issue. I do not know how the sites are being transported to Amazon -whether its being performed by Wizard and J.B. or by other Mods or by paid contractors or by Amazon staff. I have no idea if lawyers are involved and slowing down the process. I have no idea whether transport of the WOV forums has been given a high priority or a low priority vs the transport of the WOO site. I do not know whether technical difficulties have arisen. But I do know this: there are billions of alternative ways to spend life that are more fun than trying to get on a site repeatedly for long periods of time and being denied. Eventually, the activity on the WOV forum will decline if this issue persists, if it has not done so already. That statement is not an attack on the Amazon staff or the legal staff or the subcontractors or the moderators.
4. The WOV Forum is not a church at which the members are required to worship the mods and constantly praise them. And, Rsactuary, you are not a priest in such a church. I object to your treating me as a heretic for making simple statements of concern about the current difficulties.

As admins, my concern wouldn't be for the long-termers like myself but for the newcomers who are likely to click on links and to generate revenue for you. With the forums being unreadable, it's a revenue loss over time that probably outweighs significantly the PiTA of moving to another server.

Have you checked the junk email? I noticed some of my PM notification ended there. We havent moved the email notifications yet to the amazon, that will be done next week.
The last thread posting notification I received was sent 2017-09-07 00:06. I set the sending server ds7791.dreamservers.com as whitelisted years ago. No further connections have been recieved from that server, not even failed/dropped ones.Quote: ZugaHave you checked the junk email? I noticed some of my PM notification ended there. This site seems to now be sending mail from ec2-52-53-134-166.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com. The first connection I see was on 2017-09-18 11:24. That and subsequent connections have been rejected because the sending domain is missing DNS records. I have whitelisted the new server and will let you know if that allows receiving notifications in spite of the flagged DNS problem. Even if it does though, I don't think most folks here can make that adjustment: it requires controlling your own mail servers.
btw, the wizardofvegas.com domain MX record is set to mail.wizardofvegas.com, and that name does not translate to an IP address using my provider's nor Google's (8.8.8.8) DNS servers. Also, the sending address, previously wizardofodds@ds7791.dreamservers.com, is now seen as www-data@ip-172-31-2-75.
The last rejected notification was sent 2017-09-21 12:56. Since I haven't received others since then, perhaps settings have changed since then?
I would like to give a big "thank all" the technical wizards on the Wizard team who helped with the move to a new server, which I'm sure was not easy. This is my first post in about a month. I am currently in Cincinnati on my last day of my second trip to the northern midwest this year. That kept me too busy to post all last week. The week before I could see the site was up but my Internet service was too slow to get a post in before I got timed out. Guess my Internet connection is slower than I thought.
Other than that, nice to see you back, Mike!

Ummm... Checked my Spam folder. Nothing there.

Quote: Mission146I just started getting PM Notification E-Mails yesterday, will send you a test PM.
I replied a few minutes ago. Hope you get my reply, as there's a bit more to the story, don'cher know.
Quote: BleedingChipsSlowlyA notification for the last post was sent from server ec2-52-53-134-166.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com, which I have whitelisted, but the connection was immediately dropped due to missing DNS records for the sending domain. Any forum member who's mail service includes some type of spam filtering at the server will probably be affected the same way. That is, the communication is terminated on initial connection and mail is never received: you will not find it in your junk folder in this case.
I still do not receive email announcements of new PMs or new posts to subscribed threads, and haven't since 7-Sep. My mail service does filter spam. If WoV emails for these functions do not provide sufficient information to distinguish them from spam, then that could keep me from receiving those emails. However, everything worked properly before the DDOS attack(s) and network transition. Also, my system configuration has remained unchanged for close to forever.
BCS, is this problem fixed for you? Or, are you still not receiving these emails?
Any others out there who have this problem? Hard to believe I might be the only member with this problem. But, if this problem is unique to me, then I need to talk to my email service provider.

Perhaps.

Same issue I am having. One time it's good the next time it's slow. I'm on a iPhone 7 with good internet speed. Everything else loads good just this forum. Again sometimes it's better than others but it hasn't loaded fast in weeks.

Whoa! Stop the presses!
At about 3:30 pm (LV time) today (1-Oct) I began receiving announcements of new posts to subscribed threads. I hope all the problems have been found and repaired. Thanx to the Admins -- and any others -- who engineered whatever fixes were required.
Hopefully, everyone else is now getting email alerts of PMs and thread updates.
