I was on the Cherokee site and they have a news item about the new Cherokee casino they have started building in Murphy, NC. It is about an hour and 20 minutes to the south east....

Murphy is southwest of Cherokee. GoogleMaps estimates 1 hr 8 minutes.

If they build a comparable casino, I suspect it will draw a lot of the Atlanta traffic and all of whatever traffic there is from Chattanooga. It would be a more difficult destination for you and me, so I'm not likely to go there. OK, maybe once if they have different chips to collect. Maybe the diversion of some of the traffic would make Cherokee better for us.

Getting old is hell. I knew it was south west. Not sure why my stupid fingers typed east....

If nothing else, it should take some pressure off the hotel portion, so rooms at the casino should be easier to come by. As to the games, it will remain to be seen.
Will they give us slightly better rules to try and draw some more play? Possibly.
Will they tighten up the games and try to bleed more from the players, to offset the lost revenue? With CET --- More likely.

However, it is my understanding the decisions are made by the Cherokee tribal leaders, and CET is there to manage and run the casino as decided by the tribal leaders. At least that was the reason I was given for the changes in the craps rules over the last couple of years.

Not sure the weather is going to cooperate for this or not.
For Doc and I, it should not be an issue. Not sure about OG or rdw4potus though.

Wed and Thur low in the negatives, with snow possible.
Fri high in mid 30s, so that is okay.
Sat is a wintry mix in the 40s, and Sun is 40s with rain.

My wife and I are definitely going, assuming we don't get a bunch of snow that keeps us from getting over the mountain in Asheville. I have already booked our massages for Sunday morning.

Are we going to stir up that "you and me" vs. "you and I" thing again?

As for the Cherokee get together, my plan is to pretend that the NC Dept. of Transportation knows how to clear at least the 4-lane roads so that I can just ignore the weather issues. Why let rational thought processes get in the way of playing craps?

I'm definitely in. Hotel is booked & prepaid and I'm too cheap to strand that money:-) Current plan is to work about 6 hours on Saturday so that I can take off about 6 hours on Monday. I'll drive up saturday evening (worst case sunday morning) & leave monday morning. Hopefully, the weather will help with crowding and table limits...

a little too far out to trust the forecast. I'd say, though, that it hasn't scared me off yet ... if the wintry mix of last year that we had for WoV east first of March didn't do it ...

in the meantime, the current cold spell around here is pretty impressive. Not much snow tho'

As OG said, the forecast is a ways out, but right now it looks like Saturday could be an ugly travel day. Although they are calling for mid 40s, so if it is going to snow, it would have to be in the morning I presume.

Oconaluftee, eh?

Yeah, it's the name of an area, a valley, a river, a Visitors' Center, a few more things, and perhaps a NOAA weather station. The Soco Creek that flows between the casino and the main hotel runs into the Oconaluftee River maybe two winding miles downstream. That river is the one beside most of the non-casino places that people really associate with the tribe, including the museum and the Oconaluftee Indian Village. I have no idea what the word means. Since Harrah's still won't let me have a room at the casino hotel, or even subsidize my staying at an "area" hotel, I'll be footing the bill at one of the hotels across the street from the Oconaluftee River.

if the Cherokee are like the Mattaponi, it may not mean anything, sort of

That tribe is named after the Mattaponi river, the tributaries to which are the Matta, the Po, and the Ni. But I suppose Mattoponi could mean something in that language and they would still name the tributaries like that

I am in! It took some haggling (including a hang-up-and-call-again), but I got a comp for Cherokee for three nights. Looking forward to some craps action.

The only question left is: What do you want to eat at Ruth's Chris?

Let's hear it for teddys!

hip hip hooray - hip hip hooray - hip hip hooray

(Thank goodness for copy and paste, otherwise there would have only been one cheer.)

I would never turn down Ruth's Chris. I have eaten at the Cherokee one three times and it has always been top notch. However, we might also want to consider the buffet. On Sunday's they bring out the seafood, clams and both iced crab legs and steamed crab legs. And if I remember right, they were king crabs. That was the first time we had been in the buffet, and it was surprisingly good.
If we decide on Ruth's, we will want to get reservations in early.

I guess we are getting close enough to start posting a tentative schedule.

confirmed Attendees: (EDIT: rdw4potus confirmed)

RC and Mrs. - arriving Friday night
Odiousgambit - sometime Saturday I think
Doc and Mrs. - Sunday around noon ?
teddys - guessing in on Friday sometime?
rdw4potus - coming in on Saturday

Anyone else I may have missed?

I don't think any of us are AP so recognition is not a concern that I think we need to consider. Correct?

Sunday will be the official meet up. I believe Doc has indicated he will get there a bit before noon.
I suggest we meet in the food court area in the right side of the casino at 12:00 noon.

- One or two may be leaving on Sunday, so not sure what time we should have dinner. If you are leaving on Sunday, please indicate what time you would like to leave Cherokee so we can see if we can get dinner in for everyone.

Since we have 5 forum members I guess I should put together a trivia contest. It will probably be short and lame, but I will declare it is designed that way, since we have very little time together as a complete group. No since wasting it on trivia.....

If you are coming in before Sunday, and want to try and get together, please send me your tentative arrival date and time, and cell number. Also, let me know if you want your arrival info, and/or cell number shared with the others who are coming in.

I will send out the information you are okay sharing in a PM to each one of the people who are committed to making this trip.

There is also Brio as an option.

The Sunday buffet was $29.99 or $34.99. I can't remember which. Still cheaper than Ruth's, but not by as much as you might think. ;-)
But if the object is to spend spend, we can definitely rack up bigger bills at either Ruth's or Brio.

Yeah those roads to Cherokee off I-40 (74 & 441) are the first plowed in the area. I've been there lots when it was snowing. Really funny thing is that a lot of times there will be a blizzard on one side of the mountain and the sun shining on the other. Cullowhee NC (home of Western Carolina University) was the wintering ground for the Cherokees as it almost never snows in that valley. Wish I could come but my finances won't allow it. I live in Charlotte a flat 186 miles and 3 hours door to door.

So we are confirmed for 5 forum members and 2 wives.
All except for Doc and mrs. will be in vicinity of the casino by Saturday evening.
It doesn't appear that anyone has travel plans for Sunday night, so we have an open agenda.

We will officially meet at the food court at noon.
Decision on supper place and time will be made at that time. Since teddys has graciously offered to host the dinner, I will leave the choice of venue up to him.
Once we know the supper time, we can grab a suitable lunch.
If everyone stays for lunch, we could do the trivia at this time. If anyone does not want to lunch it, then we will do trivia at dinner.
Don't get too excited. As trivia contests goes, this one is lame, but there shouldn't be any ties..... :-)

I presume craps will be the numero uno item on the agenda as soon as lunch is over.

Since OG has set the precedent (damn you OG), I will be offering a $25 bounty as a craps challenge (assuming we can all get on a table together).

I had a more creative challenge planned, but common sense has prevailed. (The other challenge would have made it hard for me to play and keep track of the challenge).
1. As long as I and at least 2 other members are at the same table, the challenge will remain active.
2. Whoever has the highest number of made points on ONE shoot, will win.
3. in the event of a tie, the shooter who got the number of points first will be the winner.
4. I am eligible to win (back) the $25.

Nice simple version! Should work. You are wise to avoid something hard to keep track of. As I have said before, each player should announce his progress too.

Yippee, you know I like Craps challenges!

If the dinner is at Ruth's Chris, I highly recommend the sweet potato casserole as a side. Just amazing. The garlic potatoes are also delicious, and the button mushrooms in garlic butter are excellent. They serve these as large portions on separate dishes that can easily be shared, FWIW.

You still have time to make the trip BBB. We dare you to leave the sunshine and come to the frigid mid south.....

I haven't wanted to speculate. I'm about 1/2 inch from getting in the car; I was checking hotel.com for rates earlier this week. But I dislike saying I'll be there and then not making it, and it's still up in the air.

If I had realized we had a reasonable chance to recruit you to this gathering, I would have been on your case long ago! My King N/S room at Comfort Suites will cost me less than $80 including tax for Sunday night. Would have been cheaper if I had been willing to pre-pay, but I was hoping I could eventually get Harrah's to subsidize my stay somewhere in town. No such luck. Please do join us. And also please see if you can convince Nostron to forget about that girls' softball tournament and come too. He's even right along your path.

GoogleMaps quotes it as something around 9:30 driving time from home for her. She needs to make a decision soon!

Takes me about 8 hours. It's all interstate, and I'm a leadfoot. :)

15% quicker than a GoogleMaps estimate? Sounds as if the "go" decision should be a done deal then!

I could have called it a "no-brainer", but that doesn't apply here.

Pros: several of you showing up are people I really enjoy on here and would like to meet.
Harrah's is offering a comp room for Sunday; they say Saturday's sold out. But a person could set out Saturday night, drive through, arrive Sunday morning and play until the meet-up. Leave Monday.
I haven't been there since 1999, when I spent a couple hours after a family visit to Clingman's Dome. From what you all say, it's improved a lot.

Cons: I have to go to LV for a week the next Saturday.
I'm close enough to broke it's quite unwise to make the trip in addition to that.

However, YOLO is screaming in my ear. Aaaiiiiyyeee.

Did you play their only table game ... electronic blackjack? You wouldn't believe the place is even related to that former alleged casino.

Las Vegas the next Saturday? Sounds like plenty of time to make your connections.

Close to broke? Sounds as if you probably need just one more winning session before heading to Nevada.

I'm in. Driving up saturday evening. Might try to snag aftermarket tix for heart. Otherwise, might just hunker down at the hotel and resume work. Around for all of Sunday. Driving back to Columbia first thing Monday. The fiancee is officially out for this meeting (she's still in WI. ETA in Columbia remains unknown)

Edit: Heart tix are $150?!? My crush on Nancy Wilson is not that strong...

They must have released more seats since I see a bunch of tickets available on TicketMaster from $43-$64: http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0E004D5E887929A2

Yes, I was also looking at Heart tickets ... :-0

Anybody who will be in town Saturday: There looks like there is an 100% player equity slot tournament at 2PM. Looks like a bit of fun. I will be playing. http://www.harrahscherokee.com/content/dam/che/Nightlife/Essence/Harrahs-Cherokee-Nightlife-Essence-9.pdf

I suppose if you ask them they say video poker doesnt count, but sometimes you find it does and 'they' don't know.

Anybody know if video poker slips through the cracks in other ways, such as generating the same points as slots when not supposed to?

The casino belongs to the Cherokees, but CET runs it for them, and CET pretty much runs it like the rest of their properties. I'm not a slot player, nor a video poker player, but I think the best I have been able to notice is 8/5 JoB.
I don't recall having found any 9/6 even in the high limit room.
I don't know what to look for on Bonus and Double Bonus poker games, of which they have a lot.

What makes you think it is a 100% player equity?

First Place 45% of Total Prize Pool
Second Place 25% of Total Prize Pool
Third Place 15% of Total Prize Pool
Fourth Place 10% of Total Prize Pool
Fifth Place 5% of Total Prize Pool

I'm betting it is trick wording. Sure, they are paying out 100% of the prize pool, but not all $20 of your entry goes into the prize pool.

Still, for $20, not a bad way to kill off some time.

There used to be 9/6 JoB at the $5 level in High Limit Room. 1 bank 3 machines a side. $1 $2 $5 denomination Only $5 is 9/6. There was also one lonely $5 Game King on the floor but I think it got wiped out when they added to the tables game section. Last time I was there the New Sphinx 3D machine was throwing out money.
Gambling is a metaphor for life. Hang around long enough and it's all gone.
