Luck Be A Hotel: Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa's 10-Year Streak

We were in AC just this weekend; we spent Saturday night at Revel and Sunday at Borgata. IMO the article targets the one thing that differentiates the two properties: Borgata's appeal is broader. Revel's appeal is more to younger adults. As I wrote elsewhere, being in Revel on a Saturday night feels like being dropped into the middle of an episode of Jersey Shore. Borgata, on the other hand, feels classier, less gaudy.

As if any casino can be described as anything other than gaudy; they are all painted women, but one is comfortable with her position, inviting and easy going, whereas the other is wobbling on her high heels and struggling to maintain a blase attitude.

Anyhow, the article is interesting. The future of AC should be to become something like "Nassau-NJ". Atlantis has a lot of great attractions, and a casino. AC has a lot of casinos, but doesn't take advantage of its other attractions. But it does have an ocean, and a boardwalk. And it is in the middle of the most densely populated corridor of the country. If Revel finds its legs, AC will have a chance.

I too was in AC this past weekend. We were at Revel around 7 Friday night and the place was dead with a capital D. We then went to the Borg and it was jumping like you wouldn't believe! Boardwalk casinos have the benefit of foot traffic while the Marina casinos do not which should be a plus. If you're at a Marina casino there is nowhere to walk to other than the path between Golden Nugget and Harrah's. If you're at the Borgata there is nowhere to go without transportation. I guess it shows that when a decent product is offered people will find a way to get there.

By the way, I went to Revel several times Friday, Saturday and Sunday and no aceofspades sighting.

Saturday night was the Alicia Keyes concert at Revel. The casino was packed. The noise from the stripper pit (where they have the girls dancing above the tables) was insane. Upstairs, the lobby and "resort" area was dead, though, and they'd given us a comped room even though our level of play did not warrant it.

Sunday's breakfast service at Alcove (in Revel) was stultifyingly slow. The people were very nice, but borderline competent. I guess it counts that they didn't drop anything. It took forever to get just the coffee and tea before ordering, then it took forever to order and get our food. Omelets should take about 5-10 minutes; hell, any breakfast that doesn't involve steak should take 5-10 minutes. Our orders were correct, but those on either side of us were fraught with mistakes and complaints. One woman ordered her omelet with egg whites (she absolutely did, and the waitress confirmed it when she ordered) but it came as whole egg; she complained, but said that she didn't want to wait any longer and would rather have it taken off her bill. I don't blame her. They brought her a plate of fruit, gratis, which she accepted. But she was still irritated, as were we, and the people on the other side of us as well. You shouldn't piss people off at breakfast. Just suck it up and do the damn buffet already. The best resorts in the world offer breakfast buffets, and brunch buffets on Sundays.

We checked out of Revel and there were a few people in line checking in, less than a dozen. We played some slots between 11 and 12:30, and left. We then drove over to Borgata and had to wait in line, in the car, at valet parking. When we walked into the lobby there were perhaps 100 people in a Disney-type line, maybe more. It was hoppin', as you said 1BB. I had trouble finding open tables to play at, but I did find them. We played until about 6PM, then... ate at the freakin' buffet so that we could maximize our fun time. If we'd had to go to a sit-down, we wouldn't have been able to play for another couple hours before heading back to PA. We left at about 8:30.

There, that's another thing. One hotel caters to its guests' needs, and the other requires its guests to change to what they offer. One is full, the other only draws during special events.

Luck Be A Hotel: Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa's 10-Year Streak

Interesting read. Aside from the grammatical errors in the article too numerous to list, Borgata's 2000 rooms definitely did not all open with flat-screen TVs. I remember the old CRT TVs there all too well.

I do agree that Borgata has a nice appeal across a wide array of demographics, and that's key to its success. I hope Revel will take a page from Borgata's playbook and try to broaden its customer base.

AC should have made it, y'know. It still has a chance. Everywhere you go any more there are casinos. But only the coast has an ocean.

And hey, I don't post all that much! I try to wait until I have something to say, anyhow. We'd love to go to Vegas more often. Now that our daughter is graduating from college our vacations will be less restricted (except that she's moving out of the country and probably going to expect us to visit her). And I was supposed to go last October, but my prize was snatched from me and given to someone else, because we'd gone to Atlantis earlier in the year. But We're going this year, assuming we hit our objectives.

Food and dining at the Revel is just the absolute worst. I don't think I've ever had an unequivocally good experience in more than 20 meals on the property. I do not understand why that is so hard to get right.

Yeah, they just got flat screens recently; Nov 2011, I think. And Trump Marina is mentioned as contemporary with Golden Nugget. Those are the two I can think of without referencing the article again.

Funny you should say that. There is a Wizard of Odds in AC who writes a column for one of the free local guides that can be found up and down the Boardwalk.
