Nez Perce litigation funds will enable the Yurok Tribe to finance and construct a tribally owned hotel and modest casino, which will be located on the Yurok Reservation in Klamath. The Yurok Tribe has worked for the better part of a decade on the project. Multiple economic studies were performed by consulting firms and the architectural design plans are complete.

The hotel/casino project is part of larger economic vision to capitalize on the Redwood National Park and Klamath River tourism market. Every year vacationers spend more than 100 million in Del Norte County. The Yurok Reservation, located on the Klamath River, sits in the center of some of the last old growth redwoods—the main draw for visitors to the area.

The Yurok Reservation has a high level of unemployment rate of approximately 30 percent. In the northern parts of the reservation, the unemployment rate is close to 80 percent. This project is projected to create approximately one hundred jobs for the tribal membership and local community.

With all the changes to the economy in the last decade I hope some of those studies are still valid.

This is near the Wild Rivers coastal recreation area. Fishing, camping, etc. The Freeway is well inland and goes through Yreka but the coastal 101 route goes through the Redwoods. Three dollar BJ (tables open at noon), bingo, slots, poker.

The nearby Elk River Casino and Lucky Seven Casino already are in established markets and closer to the Oregon border but here come the Yuroks ready to put up a hotel and a casino in the middle of a fishing area in hopes of getting some of those 101 dollars that drive by from time to time. Do they think people will drive further south from Oregon just to get to the Yuroks? Do they think that anyone that close to the coast is bound for Las Vegas?

How many fisherman and RV campers do they think will descend on a casino in the Redwoods for three dollar blackjack?

That depends on your definitions of "casino" and "near the ocean". Casino San Pablo is pretty much right on San Francisco Bay, although it is pretty much just a card room with some Class II slots, if I heard right.

The Catalina Casino in Avalon has a nice oceanside location but has never hosted any gambling at all.

The Yuroks want to use ten year old economic studies to justify building yet another casino in a temperate rain forest in hopes that a three dollar black jack table will become the Tribe's Salvation. Ain't gonna happen. People who play on a three dollar BJ table which opens at noon are going to be "splurging" with a twenty dollar bankroll. Its a fishing area even the casinos look like fishing lodges and are nothing but overgrown poker rooms and bingo parlors.

The tribe is not going to prosper simply because they start hiring pretty girls in skimpy outfits to deal three dollar blackjack. Most anyone driving by the place will be more interested in fishing than in the blackjack and I'm sorry to say they will probably be more interesting in fishing than in the pretty girl too.

On-edit: At ceremonial first shovelfull of dirt newspaper described the project as " a 60-room Holiday Inn Express with a casino big enough for 125 slot machines." If so, its hardly going to be much independence for the Indians since apparently they've abandoned the notion of table games.
