"The promoters of Ballot Measures 82 and 83 announced even before the Voters’ Pamphlet was mailed that they were suspending their campaign and its nearly $7 million of sunk costs to authorize a huge private casino in Wood Village, just east of Portland."

It seems the anti-private casino voices are directed by lobbyists for the Indian tribes that have a monopoly on Oregon casinos and contribute substantially to Oregon re-election campaigns.

See LINK BELOW...

So Oregon voters prefer gamblers be required to deal with a state owned monopoly that enjoys a house edge of eighty percent rather than a privately owned, taxpaying casino offering gamblers a 0.6 percent house edge!

Now that the results are in:

The casino related measures did indeed fail, probably because the measures were drawn as pro-casino instead of anti-Indian or at least Anti-Monopoly measures. Them Injuns were the ones that "circled the wagons" and hired every political hack and lobbyist available.

In Oregon, people like to think of casinos as akin to brothels: the people want them but they're somewhat "sinful," so keep them isolated, far from the population centers.

The state also feared the effect a casino in Portland would have on its slot revenues (video slots) in its major market, Portland.

Spirit Mtn. casino was the primary opponent of the proposed casino, just as they've been the primary opponent of allowing an Indian casino in La Center, Washington, a Portland suburb.

To fund their multi-million dollar lobbying efforts, Spirit Mtn. has tightened their comps and, by anecdotal report, the hold on their slots as well.

Just like how the tribal lobby bought and paid for the online poker ban in WA state.

Maryland just lowered tax on slots to 60% and added tables games to be taxed at 20%. Also adding a casino near D.C. anf going to 24 hours. I assume the " benevolent dictator" has his agents en-route to Maryland as I type this !

Indian tribes shot the casino measure down 72 percent to 26 percent. An utter trouncing!
