It was pretty good, for what it is. We saw it in XD/3D. The 3D was nice, but not essential to the experience, like it was for Avatar; this would be the same either way, whereas Avatar would suck without the 3D to hold your attention.

The plot stayed simple, with very little exposition; the film was basically loud, fast, and colorful. It gets right to it, and doesn't let up until the end. Shut your eyes and it sounds like a giant baby banging on pots and pans. But if you shut your eyes you would miss some excellent CGI, and some excellent stunt work. Keep 'em open.

The climactic battle was about twice as long as it should have been. That's my only complaint.

Otherwise, I'll give it a 6, which is strong considering that I'm not a fan of the genre. If you're a fan of this stuff, it is absolutely a 9.5 within its self-imposed limits.

(Sorry - I can't resist)

Thanks for your timely review. Perhaps you could give us some feedback on Forrest Gump, Towering Inferno or some other recent films you've seen.

It's only been out 14 days, but you have a point. Everybody who was going to see the movie has already seen it. These type of movies are very front-loaded. Build the buzz with big advertising and fan-centered marketing, and then hope everybody sees it on the first weekend before word gets out how bad it really is.

Battleship comes out this weekend. Most people already know how bad it is going to be.

The movie stands a good chance of being the Marvel Comic adaptation (27 films) with the highest number of boxoffice tickets sold. There is a long way to go to reach the original Spider Man from ten years ago.

I haven't seen one of these new large screen formats (XD or BIGD), only IMAX.

Hehe, that's OK. I wrote it because I like to write stuff. If it gave you enjoyment by allowing you to respond with wit, it's all good, it works.

I wouldn't have gone, but my daughter couldn't see it because it opened during her finals week, and when she got home, all her friends had already seen it, and she's leaving the country tomorrow... so she was stuck with the embarrassment of seeing it with her parents (us). I thought it was a pleasant diversion, Mrs Mosca said she should have stayed home and done laundry.

I have no desire to see this movie. However, if anybody does, I sincerely hope that you will walk out if at any point in the movie, any character utters the phrase: "You sunk my battleship."

I enjoyed Avengers, even if it did run about 20 minutes too long. I can appreciate that it was difficult to cover all the relationships between the characters in a sensible manner, but the story and pace suffered for it.

If you are not familar with the Marvel Universe, and have not seen any of the previous Avenger cast movies (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk (2008 version)), I would recommend that you watch at the two most recent releases: Captain America and Thor to get the context.

Thor and Hulk have been going at it for some time. Sort of the unstoppable force vs. the immovable object:

I really did not care for this film. It was too long and for most of the movie, the Avengers fought each other (lol).

Yeah, the hulk jumping OVER 15 story buildings etc., no thanks.

In general, WAY TOO MUCH CGI for my taste. I give this film a 4/10.

I knew this without seeing it. Movies heavy on the
cartoon aspect (CGI) bore the living crap out of me.

I think you are going to find more CGI in regular non-cartoon movies. Already you see it if there is some kind of fantasy element mixed in with an otherwise real world element. Forest Gump was really the groundbreaker in using CGI in a dramatic film.

In the future you may see it more and more as an alternative to trying to work with the difficult reality of weather and the cost of sets.

What about viewing it as a vehicle whereby a formerly unbankable star makes fifty million dollars while the rest of the above the line crowd will be lucky to clear two million, if that.

Well if ANYONE is still considering seeing the Avengers,
I would say it is one of the better movies I have seen
in quite some time. Definitely not a 4 out of 10, imho.

The movie has been out 24 days now, and has reached the same earnings Avatar did in 34 days (in 2009). Doesn't seem to be slowing very much. Any opinions on it passing Avatar?

IMHO Avengers may not be a great movie, but it was better than Avatar.

day Avatar Avengers
1 $27 $81
2 $52 $150
3 $77 $207
4 $93 $226
5 $109 $244
6 $126 $258
7 $137 $270
21 $381 $477
22 $394 $486
23 $415 $500
24 $431 $514
25 $436
26 $441

I meant, do you think it is possible? Prometheus will come out in two weeks giving us another space movie, and Spider-Man will be released after Avengers is out for 60 days. Presumably, most people will stop going to the Avengers after Spider Man is released.

Avatar is stupid, I'm sorry. Its a dumb movie. If it
hadn't been in 3D it would have flopped big time.
I have yet to see it all the way thru. It made me
motion sick in the theatre and I left, and on TV
its just so dumb its not watchable,

The sad thing is that, before Avatar, I always thought James Cameron was a good writer. According to IMDB the following are his writing credits.

2009 Avatar (written by)
2003 Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (characters)
2000-2002 Dark Angel (TV series) (creator / story)
1997 Titanic (written by)
1995 Strange Days (screenplay / story)
1994 True Lies (screenplay)
1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (written by)
1989 The Abyss (written by)
1986 Aliens (screenplay / story)
1985 Rambo: First Blood Part II (screenplay)
1984 The Terminator (written by)
1981 Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (screenplay / as H.A. Milton)

Avatar 3 (characters / screenplay) (announced)
Avatar 2 (screenplay) (announced)
Terminator 5 (characters) (announced)
Battle Angel (screenplay) (announced)

In contrast, Joss Whedon is going to follow up The Avengers with two low budget productions. One will be a Shakespeare play, "Much Ado about Nothing" and the other will be sci-fi romance called "In Your Eyes"

The only movie on that list I respect is Aliens. I thought
Titanic was a joke. It was a boring soap opera with
special effects. They were on an extremely crowded
boat, over crowded in fact, yet there was scene after
scene where the young couple was completely alone
on deck, in the ballroom, everywhere. Ridiculous.
