Quote: JimMorrisonEven when he slowed down at 70 I thought he had it made. .
Actually, thats the sign that he's about to shut down. Its a young man's sport, doing it when you're over 50 is flirting with dropping dead on the spot. You're stressing out your whole system, not fun.
Quote: DJTeddyBearHow were the innocent bystanders reacting? And on to the really important question: Did he get the crosswords correct?
Some other people in the restaurant were watching from a distance. A group of high school students seemed to be the most amused by it.
Nobody checked the crosswords because David failed the eating leg. If anyone has an interest in checking them I can scan and post them.
Call it morbid curiosity, but, yeah, I'd like to know how he did on that part.
Where did you go to dinner afterwards? ;)

Missing, would like to see that.

A game effort David! SooPoo, any thoughts on what David could do different next time? Maybe having warmer nuggets, or not dipping?

He should bring along a Yiddishe mother to harangue him: "Eat, mine kind! You're all skin and bones!"
Quote: gofaster87Hey, thats what the challenge was. If it was a full hour to eat 100 nuggets and nothing else it wouldn't have been too hard.
The stomach isn't the size of a basketball, its quite small. A greasy McLardNug is very slow to digest, so your stomach will just get filled up till you barf. I don't think its easy at all.

The stomach is elastic, and can actually accomodate a pretty large volume. It's the muscles that need to be worked on. Check out this photo of former world hot dog eating champion, Kobayashi with 60+ dogs. You can actually see pointy ends of hot dogs pushing up under his skin.
Quote: AyecarumbaThe stomach is elastic
Its somewhat elastic, its not made out of rubber. Generally, 4.5 to 5 pounds of food and you're done. Bread products are deceptive, they have a lot of air in them.

Didn't we decide before that 100 nuggets weigh approximately 3.5 lbs?
Quote: rdw4potusDidn't we decide before that 100 nuggets weigh approximately 3.5 lbs?
I thought it 4.4 pounds if each one weighs 20 grams.
85 nuggets is above and beyond after that run. Too bad the challenge wasn't for 75 nuggets!
Quote: WizardDavid had successfully eaten a 6 pound burrito before, the same size as the B3 Sahara burrito. With the McNuggets the issue was not so much the weight but the grease.
Maybe it was the ground up beaks and feathers? And chicken poop?
Or is it high quality mystery meat?
See ...that would be my issue. Anything labeled a "nugget", bleh.
Quote: WizardWith the McNuggets the issue was not so much the weight but the grease. It is a lot harder than it looks.
Last summer I found myself i n Springfield, IL, at Joe Roger's Chili Parlor. For fans of Man v. Food, Adam Richman tied the record for eating the firebrand chili. THe record was 5. I love spicy food, so I thought Id give it a whirl. I only made it through 2 bowls, because all the chili was is spicy ground beef in a grease.

Speaking of Chili, I challenge anyone combing to WoVCon to eat a bowl of Binion's chili. I hear it is really greasy and disgusting.

$20 says you can't eat the whole bowl. If they don't have it on the menu any longer, bets have no action.

Free bump :P
Seriously, the video is very well done. You have the interview with David before the event, information about the challenge, shots of everything that took place, explanations, follow-though, etc. The only defect was a shot of the pavement for 15 seconds or so on part one. Oh, and no mention of the side bets made online. It's a good decision to leave that out.
I am still waiting for SOOPOO to tell me that I can retire after hitting my $20,000,000 jackpot on the $5 slot machine!
Quote: gamblerThis is even funnier once you watch it. I hope to see more Wizard Challenges in the future. Personally, the crossword puzzles would be the hardest aspect for me, though I couldn't eat 100 chicken nuggets on the best of days. Heck, I doubt I would be able to eat 20!

Part 2
Reactions:
1. The crosswords are one of the more impressive things I've ever seen. Kudos to David.
2. I like the change of expression during the McNuggets from "I'm eating McNuggets!" to "...another f'ing nugget..." Every time we're back to watching David, he looks less and less happy.
3. Best $5 I ever spent (assuming there are no long-term negative implications for David's health...)
I'd say his odds of winning the 'south' are similar to UConn's womens basketball team winning the NCAA tourney. His goal is to finish in the top 3 overall, which would qualify him for the 'puzzle-off' on stage in front of a few thousand fans. I give him a 10% chance of accomplishing that.
By the way, he still holds the WoV record for McNuggets at 88, and he did that after running 2 miles, and doing 2 NYTimes crossword puzzles.
So from all my friends here on WoV, wish David positive variance this weekend......
Quote: Wizardp.s. I hear David (SooPoo jr.) is tied for second with four more crosswords to go.
Looks like he's in a three-way tie for second after six puzzles, 100 points (in effect, 4 minutes) behind the leader - the seventh is Sunday morning, after which the top three compete in a final, head-to-head puzzle, if I am reading this right.
Current Standings

The current leader is the 6-time past champion. SPjr is doing really well to be in it at all, but that's going to be a tough lead to overcome.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think all he has to do is finish in the top three, and then they compete against each other in a single puzzle, with the fastest correct solve being the tournament winner. Based on a story on last year's tournament, it appears that there is a 1-second handicap for every 10 points, so if the 100-point lead holds up, Feyer would get a 10-second head start.
Fortunately for SooPoo Junior Nation, Anne Ellison had a miss in puzzle 5, or she would have been in second place 2 minutes clear of the three-way tie. Speaking of misses, I'm a little surprised 53 of the top 100 have perfect scores through the first six puzzles. (Meanwhile, "Dr. Fill," the crossword-solving computer, had a rather commanding lead after the first four, but somehow missed 35 words on puzzle #5.)
UPDATE: He was one minute faster than one of the other two, so he finished in the top three and qualified for the championship final. He was also one minute faster than Feyer, so I assume that cuts 2 1/2 seconds off of his head start...which is now 7 1/2 seconds. Still, there's no shame in second place - at least when it pays $1500 more than third.
Also, there were 68 perfect sets of 7 puzzles; the lowest finish among them was 217th.
Regardless, incredibly well done, especially winning the South division!
Woohoo?
Whatever, extremely great results, hold heads high, tell 99.9% of the world to kiss your ass ;-)

Quote: WizardHere is what you've all been waiting for, the results of the Vegas Challenge. In attendance were SooPoo, David (SooPoo jr.), gofaster87 (who I can confirm is not Rob Singer), Joel (a friend of mine who previously attempted 100 McNuggets, and got to 85), Joel's son, JimMorrison, and me.
I drove my Clark High School before McDonalds and the track was full of kids doing all sorts of after school sports. So using that track was out. Per AmyJoel's warning, I determined that it was just under half a mile from the McDonalds down Arville to Penwood Ave.. So we agreed he would run there and back twice. Before getting started the McNuggets were ordered, because David wanted them cool, and he prepared a lemon flavored drink, to help balance the grease of the McNuggets.
Shortly after 5:00 David started off on the run. Despite being on a sidewalk, with some draffic to dodge, he completed the 2-mile run in about 15 minutes, which is quite good. He ran right into McDonalds and got to work on the two New York Times crosswords. I thought that he had to two of them. He finished those in about five minutes, not much more time than it would take me to write letters at random.
Then it was onto the main attraction, 100 Chicken McNuggests, and he had 40 minutes left. SooPoo tended to all the particulars, making sure he had enough water and lemonade, and coaching. David dug right in, eating them as fast as possible. He dipped them in lemonade and took frequent drinks of water. Joel commented he liked the idea of dunking the McNuggets, but thought he was drinking too much water.
The first 50 McNuggets went by quite fast and with little difficulty. At that point David started to slow down a bit, he face got more pale, and it was clear that he was hitting the uphill part. At about the 60 point the peanut gallery thought he would still succeed, and lines were bandied around about -200 as the line on the "yes," but no in-progress bets were finalized. However, he obvious he was started to feel the pain more. At point one he took about a one-minute break to compose himself.
At about the 70 McNugget point he was still going at a steady, albeit much slower pace. He was face was sweaty, and perhaps a little green. Soopoo was offering encouraging words, but said he if didn't feel comfortable he should throw in the towel. David was obviously determined to give it his best effort, and keep right on going.
A about the 80 McNugget point it was obvious the pain was about twice as much as at the 70 point. With about 15 minutes left at this point, David did his best to eat as fast as possible, but you could tell each McNugget was both a mental and physical challenge to get down. It was very suspenseful for the audience. I think everyone thought he would probably do it, but only with great difficulty.
After swallowing nugget number 86 (someone correct me if I'm wrong), David stuffed two more in his mouth, but was having trouble swallowing. Then he said that some just came back up. Evidently just a little, because he never vomited. Father SooPoo recommended that he quit, and David agreed. What was left of McNuggets 87 or 88 he spit into an empty McDonalds bag at the ready. It was over and the "no" side won.
SooPoo paid the winners present immediately and everybody congratulated David on an outstanding effort. I'm very sure SooPoo will pay any other winners by mail, Paypal, or whatever.
Afterward there was a lot of discussion between GoFaster87 and JimMorrison about another eating competition for WoVCon. Maybe Joel will participate too. I'm sure there will be a thread about it soon.
So, that is it. Here are some pictures of the big event. Click on any picture for a larger version.
