If there is to be a WOV-Con meeting, we need to plan early, and have ideas for the best location.
It can be where we rent a conference room at a Casino, or commandeer a Restaurant at a Casino or a local joint.

Aside from that, the area is the critical issue:
- if it's mostly locals, it can be anywhere reasonable in the Valley.
- if a lot of out-of-town members will be around at the same time, then downtown or the Strip must be a consideration.

Where to have it, and why?

Maybe Wizard can use this as an opportunity to invite Rob Singer for a chat session/debate with other members of all beliefs?

Good thinking Dan. However from the limited reponse to the poll I dont think a conference room will be necessary. I do agree with the early planning though.

i voted for the Strip as that would be most convenient for me.

Yes, having the WOV-Con on the strip or downtown makes it accessible to visitors without a car - just use the strip bus.
It's a tiny bit inconvenient for locals because of strip traffic, but this pales in comparison to the car-less visitor trying to get to Green Valley Ranch or Rampart, or some outlying place. Mass transit to outlying areas in this town is a horror show, and cabs are a real costly shakedown.
Most of the good stuff is on the strip in any case.
And we can use this site to pick places. I think the buffet at the Wynn or the Bellagio is a real treat, but there's so much to choose from.

The Red Rock is actually quite nice and away from the strip, and there's bus service going to and / from the Fashion Mall to out there. Red Rock low key and features a decent array of restaurant and some fine gaming opportunities.

How about the Hilton? Strip Visitors can get there using the Monorail, and its off strip for the locals. It also has the awesome Benihana for food.

Although I think I remember the Wizard mentioning parking at the Hilton was a nightmare. And Benihana is only open for dinner, but well worth it.

Not bad. I think you can get there via ACE, too. I can also get a player card for my collection. Plus we could perhaps hold a mock memorial service for the departed Trek rides (j/k)

As for a venue I'd assumed we'd meet around lunch time, as it's less hectic and likely more convenient to the locals. I'd have no problem for dinner, though.

Red Rock is fine. But the Hilton? Come on, why not Greek Isles?

A get together should be held first with the out of town visitor in mind, and any visitor who doesn't rent a car when in LV doesn't know what they're doing to begin with.

The M, now there's a nice place that's very easy to get to that's not ever crowded until all the local scroungers come in for the seafood buffets.

I dont have a driving license. It would be kind of difficult for me to rent a car. I have my own two legs, and a basic understanding of the public transit system in Vegas, and I've done ok so far.

I agree with Nareed that lunchtime is a good time to meet, and Paigowdan mentioned the Wynn and Bellagio buffets neither of which I have tried yet. Purely for selfish reasons I would prefer the Bellagio, but the Wynn is a reasonable second.

I suggested the Hilton purely as a place to get to that I imagined would be easy to get to for the majority of people. Plus Benihana does Rock.

I think the greatest utility would be realized doing something on the Strip. It would be nice if we could get a poker game going somewhere too. We should have done this two years ago, when I used to get great suites at the MGM and Mandalay Bay. If it isn't too hot, I'd be happy to lead an optional hike up Red Cap. I led DorthyGale up there recently, and she seemed to enjoy it.

These are the reasons why I wouldn't come to a meeting like this in the first place. I don't need to deal with snobs on my leisure time.

I vote for strip. Just seems more convenient. A great thing to do would have been to get a game going on those electronic poker machines at Excalibur (no tips!), but those are gone ... I hear Gold Coast will deal a private game for you for a nominal fee. I think any of the west side MGM properties would be fine to meet up in, or MGM itself. If somebody in the group is a BP and has comps at a particular property so much the better, and that should be taken into consideration.

I'm no longer a BP, but I do have lots of Station points. Perhaps the Palace Station? It is a bit off strip, but a very good value.

Maybe we can take over Pasta Palace there?
It's "essentially" Strip, because it's easy to get to by #204 bus from the strip, easy for visitors. The Sahara bus runs ~ every 20 -25 minutes or so.
The #204 bus link is below...
http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/transit/route/204/204(3-28-10).pdf
#204 actually goes all the way to Red Rock, about a half-hour from the strip

I'm happy to attempt to venture that way, thanks for the bus link Dan.

The only Station I have ever been in was Main Street Station, and I must admit I did enjoy the 777 Brewpub. I would love to visit Green Valley Ranch to see how much has changed/stayed the same since the American Casino TV show (which I do love).

I voted for "Strip", but anything near-strip would be fine, too. As would most any place in the metro area, for that matter. My thinking is that designating "strip" still leaves a lot of options for where to meet, and there are plenty of things for people to do in the area before and/or after this specific get together. Of course, I only get to Las Vegas two or perhaps three times a year, so the chances are rather small that I will actually be there when everyone else wants to convene, particularly if the choice is for the summer. On the other hand, if it turns out that I am in town, I will definitely have a rental car, and I would be willing to assist in the transportation issues to get everyone together.

I'll repeat my earlier comment from the other thread: My next visit to Las Vegas will be in mid-December (13th p.m. to 18th a.m.) -- anyone else expect to be there then and have interest in getting together? There was some discussion/suggestion a while back about having a calendar to record schedules for out-of-towners visiting the city, so as to provide a centralized way to make plans for meeting each other. Was any feasible way of handling that ever devised?

The Main Street Station is not a "Stations" casino. For years, before I moved here, I thought it was. Agreed, the 777 is good. My favorite restaurant downtown.

Well you learn something new every day. I feel like I should have known that. They should correct the naming situation. It confuses the situation for simpletons like me. Damn Boyd.

As some of you know, I put together a lunch last month.

Although I didn't "OFFICIALLY" set a date until one week prior, I had spectified one of two dates as early as three months before the lunch.

As it was, the only attendees were the people who I spoke to privately before setting the date, and two others who never responded on the official thread and never called or anything. I'm not saying they weren't welcome, just that they weren't expected.

That said, putting this together might be a royal P.I.T.A. with few results. The notion of renting a meeting space seems a bit over ambitious.

For the record, I didn't vote, because I doubt I'll be returning anytime other than to go to my yearly conference in September. However, if I could be there, I wouldn't really care much WHERE it was, but who is attending. The bus system in the valley is not that tricky.

I dont doubt that it will be. However I think that even if we only get 3 or 4 people together after all this it still would be worth it. As I have said before I would love to meet a few of the regulars and have a get together. With a bit of advance notice we may even be able to pull it off. Worst case scenario - Im still in Vegas. Best Case Scenario - I have a great day in Vegas with a bunch of new friends.

If enough people want it, it will work.

I see it as a somewhat over-elaborate Wizard's Coffee. The idea of setting the date now may help get a bigger group together. But I agree about meeting space. Such things should only be done when people pay and confirm attendance in advance.

If I were the one trying to set this up, I'd say "this is where it will be, the approximate date within a reasonable window of when it will be, and how it will go down". I'd ask for input and make the final decisions soon thereafter, giving plenty of notice for the people who truly want to attend. Attempting to make a Democracy out of it only dooms it to confusion or failure or both.
