Well traveled members... is holiday travel a wholesale nightmare? Or are there windows of opportunity to be found?

Like Xmas, I'd imagine 12/20 - 1/1 would be a disaster, but the interwebs are telling me some days immediately preceding or following holidays are great for deals. Anyone have any experience?

I've flown on Christmas Day before, and it wasn't too bad. My aunt, who flies from CA to FL every December swears by flying home on New Year's Eve.

Last year, I got a sweet deal flying red eyes leaving Christmas Eve at 11PM and getting back in at 1am on New Years Day. Flights and airports were not at all busy.

How can there be a "dead week' in Vegas unless there is also a 'dead week' in airline travel to and from Vegas?

I've always found that early December is very dead in both Vegas and Tahoe casinos, everything picks up rapidly right after XMas.
I tell you itís wonderful to be here, man. I donít give a damn who wins or loses. Itís just wonderful to be here with you people.

Usually travelling on the holiday day itself is the best price and the airports tend not to be very busy. My wife and I wanted to go somewhere this year for Thanksgiving. Most flight prices were very high because that is the busiest travel day of the year (day before Thanksgiving). We found an international flight available on thanksgiving day for $230 round trip.

One Thanksgiving Eve, I was searching fares and found a one day sale- $30 one way to San Juan. I booked a roundtrip and surprised some friends for dinner. On the flight home, there were about twenty people on board and the Captain invited us all up to first class for complimentary adult beverages. My friends that flew down Wednesday paid eight times as much.

Day-of seems to be the winner. Thanks for that.

Separate but related question: Why is it impossible to opt out of Xmas? Serious question. And if anyone's ever experienced "just December 25th", how'd you manage it?

Eliminate children and go to work even if no one else does.

And why are government employees given the day off when it is a religious event?
