New national poll among republicans likely to vote, with participants selected at random

Trump 24%
Fiorina 15%
Carson 14%
Rubio 12%
Bush 9%

Note to EvenBob: Internet polls are not at all reliable. The persons voting are "self-selected" and indeed some campaigns encourage there supporters to vote in these polls to distort the results and make their candidate look viable.

Theirs is just one list. The same has happened on several others. You can google it if you like. One had USA at 46.

I can google it? No, if you're going to criticize our nation, give me some specifics. Stop being a coward. You've said in 2 different threads that the USA isn't even in the top 10.

Before 9/11, we were NOT "all focused on the same bullshit." Some of us were actually more familiar with Bin Laden and the Taliban than with "Friends," or, today, "The Kardashians" and "Hey, Look at Me, I'm Caitlin." The problem was that the vast preponderance of the U.S. population was not concerned about the dangers. Sadly, much of that continues today, thanks to our national leadership.

But apparently despite the warnings the CIA and your Republican government who you love to defend was not concerned.

Face, if I recall, you left your job in casino surveillance to have a go at something completely different and really didn't have a plan as to what you were going to do. What are you, in your mid-30s, with no career experience? Well no, you're at an age where employers wonder what's wrong with you, especially without a trade.

Your pop was making good money because he was in a union (which today's modern republican abhors), before globalization, before transportation and computers and all those technological and advances in shipping came into place, before NAFTA and all of the free trade agreements that were supposed to be good for America. At least Reagan thought so. So of course the world is changing with anything that can be done cheaper elsewhere being moved away. The only way that good manufacturing jobs come back to America is if an American entrepreneur ignores the economic realities and does his business here anyway (or for patriotic reasons) or can find the workers required to do the job better (yet most manufacturing jobs rely on robots anyway). As soon as the entrepreneur goes corporate you have some asshat on the Board of Directors demands to move the factory overseas because share price is more important than anything. The other way that American manufacturing comes back is through tax incentives which are borderline illegal anyway as they likely violate a trade agreement in place. But even still, those tax incentives are the on backs of some other tax payer, be it corporate, personal, or a municipal tax.

So yeah, jobs are hard to come by. The American dream cannot be realized by working your way up in USPS. It won't be found via going up some large corporate ladder. The American dream comes through the ability to adapt and the freedom to create your own unique opportunities and ideas. Applying for jobs at the local Walmart wont' put you on that path; it will put you on a path of underemployment where you are earning $9 - $11 / hour for years on end.

You seem very frustrated. Have you thought about military service? Or learning a trade?

It is. I mean, I'm not Henny Penny. Again, I realize my situation is very personal. Some of the things are my fault - maybe I should've carried on with my B.S. in biochem and not spent all my educational days getting stoned. And some are just because of where I live - The Great Lakes / Rust Belt isn't in any way near similar to, say, Austin, Tx. I don't think America is going to revert back into the Dark Ages, or cease to be, or even fall from being a major player in the world. And let's be real. I'm talking to you. That means I have a house, and electricity, and internet, and I damn sure have a pack of smokes at the ready. It's not like I'm gonna die.

Just read this one Face. You need to think about getting out of WNY and going elsewhere where the economy isn't so depressed. Can you not go back into gaming, earn some money, then do a trade?

The Human Rights index (U of CT) ranks America in 38th place for overall Human rights.
The Democracy Index puts the US in 19th place in the world for Democracy (Economist Intelligent Unit)

Actually they were misled by the departing administration. It took 9/11 to make it clear just how vulnerable and defenseless our country was. And that included disarming the domestic Air Force aircraft that was supposed to have helped protect us.

Oh, I had thought about mentioning that. You can have great work references, but employers might also be looking at how long you're staying in jobs, or whether they can expect to hang on to you -- if they put you through training and all, they may want to see someone who might not disappear on them in a couple years.

Other ones may not care about that, but that could be part of it.
There's no secret. Just know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.

"Donald Trump's company released a cease-and-desist letter Tuesday demanding that a conservative group stop running a political attack ad against Trump or face "a multi-million dollar lawsuit."

"The Trump campaign is taking issue with an ad entitled "Politician," which asks "which presidential candidate supports higher taxes, national healthcare and the Wall Street Bailout? It's Donald Trump." The ad also features a clip of Trump saying in 2004 that "in many cases I probably identify more as a Democrat.""

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/22/politics/donald-trump-club-for-growth-cease-and-desist/

This guy is so thin-skinned. If he is elected President, will he threaten to sue a someone if they say something against him?

He has said that he supports higher taxes on some individuals. He has threatened to produce a plan, but it is not out yet. The campaign ads have not even started yet--will he spend more time threatening lawsuits than just telling his story, telling us what he his plans for various things are, etc.?

He is attacking the establishment and that is a good thing. You gotta be tough to do it, though...

I do "get" that his threats are most likely a way to get more free air time. The problem is that I don't think he understands how much negativity is part of anything that involves lawsuits and lawyers!!

Despite AZ's and my theological differences, I will answer the question. We can start with freedomhouse.org's results, which mirror other sites pretty closely. America is not #1. Below is excerpts from a report which shows why America is not the most free country in the world.

US's aggregate freedom score: 92 of 100. The marks are divided as follows: 11 of 12 for Electoral Process:

Quote: Freedomhouse

Election campaigns in the United States are long and expensive. The two main parties and the constituency and interest groups that support them have used an array of methods to circumvent legal restrictions on campaign spending, and the Supreme Court on several occasions has struck down such restrictions, finding that they violated free speech rights. The cost of the 2012 presidential race alone reached at least $5.8 billion, with billions more spent on elections for Congress and state and local offices. Such ballooning expenditures have drawn criticism in part because they lead elected officials to devote more time to fundraising and less to official duties, and because large donations increase the risk or appearance of corruption.

Political Pluralism and Participation: 16 of 16.

Functioning of Government: 10 of 12.
Quote: Freedomhouse

However, the Obama administration has encountered criticism for engendering an atmosphere of secrecy. Prosecutors have exerted efforts to compel journalists to reveal the sources of leaked national security information, and the administration has been accused of implementing an aggressive policy to discourage government officials from having contact with the media. A 2013 report issued by the Committee to Protect Journalists criticized the administration’s “Insider Threat Program,” under which federal employees are obliged to monitor the behavior of colleagues to prevent unauthorized leaks. Journalists and scholars have also charged that the administration has failed to live up to the president’s promise of a responsive policy toward freedom of information requests. According to the Associated Press (AP), the administration’s censorship or denial of access to documents has grown worse in recent years—reaching 39 percent of all information requests in 2014—even as officials pledged more openness.

Freedom of Expression and Belief: 15 of 16.
Quote: Freedomhouse

Americans generally enjoy open and free private discussion, including on the internet. However, civil libertarians, many lawmakers, and other observers have pointed to the real and potential effects of National Security Agency (NSA) data collection and other forms of government monitoring on the rights of U.S. citizens. A Human Rights Watch report in July 2014 described how the fear of surveillance had affected the work of journalists and lawyers, particularly since several NSA programs were revealed in 2013. Legislation that would restrict the NSA’s bulk collection of domestic telephone records failed to win adoption in 2014, but the issue was expected to be taken up again in 2015.

Associational and Organizational Rights: 11 of 12
Quote: Freedomhouse

Federal law guarantees trade unions the right to organize and engage in collective bargaining. The right to strike is also guaranteed. Over the years, however, the strength of organized labor has declined, and less than 7 percent of the private-sector workforce is currently represented by unions. While public-sector unions have higher rates of membership, with nearly 36 percent in 2014, they have come under pressure from officials concerned about the cost of compensation and pensions to states and municipalities. The overall unionization rate in the United States is about 11 percent.

Rule of Law: 14 of 16
Quote: Freedomhouse

While the United States has a strong rule-of-law tradition, the criminal justice system’s treatment of minority groups has long been a problem. Black and Latino inmates account for a disproportionately large percentage of the prison population. Civil liberties organizations and other groups have also advanced a broader critique of the justice system, arguing that there are too many Americans in prison, that prison sentences are often excessive, that too many prisoners are relegated to solitary confinement or other maximum-security arrangements, and that too many people are incarcerated for minor drug offenses. Although the incarceration rate has declined somewhat in recent years, the United States still has the highest proportion of citizens in prisons or jails in the world....

The United States has the highest rate of legal executions in the democratic world, though the number has declined from a peak in the late 1990s. There were 35 executions in the country in 2014, the lowest number in two decades...

Major controversies surrounding counterterrorism policies dating to the administration of President George W. Bush remain unresolved. In December 2014, the Senate Intelligence Committee released the declassified summary of its long-awaited report on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) detention and interrogation tactics in the years after the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, some of which have been widely denounced as torture...

Personal Autonomy and Individual Rights: 15 of 16
Quote: Freedomhouse

The “American dream”—the notion of a fair society in which hard work will bring economic and social advancement, regardless of the circumstances of one’s birth—is a core part of the country’s identity, and voters tend to favor government policies that enhance equality of opportunity. Recently, however, studies have shown a widening inequality in wealth and a narrowing of access to upward mobility, trends that have been accentuated in the years since the 2008–09 financial crisis.... Among the world’s prosperous, stable democracies, the United States is unique in having a large underclass of poor people who have at best a marginal role in economic life.

Other countries scores for comparison:

Japan 94, France:/Estonia/Chile 95, Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Spain 96, UK/New Zealand/Australia/Belgium/Ireland 97, Canada/Denmark 98, Sweden 99, Finland/Norway 100, Italy 89, Cuba 14, Iran 17, Russia 23, India 78, Mexico 64, South Korea 84, North Korea 3,

Interesting freedomhouse things. Some of their dings against the US

Unions are weaker
More minorities are in prison
Some people have gotten "too rich" compared to other people.
People spend too much on getting elected
We have capital punishment.

I know there is a large segment of the US population who is just fine with these things. I believe a pretty good number of people within that large segment are concerned that we are losing freedoms.

That is Trump's normal reaction to criticism. He threatens lawsuits all the time, but rarely follows through.

I remember in 2006 on The View when Rosie O'Donnell said he got all his money from his dad and pointed out his various bankruptcies. He said he was going to sue her. But he never did.

Then a couple years ago he actually did sue Bill Maher for Maher jokingly offering $5 million if Trump could prove his parents weren't orangutans. What happened with that lawsuit? I'm assuming it was laughed out of court.

EDIT: Trump voluntarily withdrew that lawsuit, promising to refile at a later date. And he never did refile. Typical.

So Hillary Clinton has taken a really long time to come out for or against the Keystone pipeline. What that really means is that she didn't give a crap either way; she was waiting to use her position to help her the most politically. Not surprising; this is exactly what the Clintons did in the White House--governance by poll results, not by commitment to a particular position. "Triangulation" was what I remember it being called.

Some commentators are saying that she took this position now to help in her fight against Bernie Sanders. Perhaps she would have held on to it for later and came out on the other side to help against a Republican...

The other thing to note is that she did the equivalent of a Friday afternoon document dump--she announced it while the Pope was the big news of the day...that keeps it from being as widely discussed.

http://index.rsf.org/#!/index-details USA is 49th
http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking USA is 12th
http://www.cnsnews.com/commentary/daniel-mitchell/us-barely-cracks-top-20-ranking-nations-overall-freedom USA is 20th

That is just a few indices that are published. On my Facebook I will put up a link titled "Still think you live in a free country?" when I find our freedoms taken away shown in an linkable article. Since folks are interested perhaps I will start a thread when I find said links over at DT. I'm not going back in my FB history now and not searching for articles now, that I will leave to Matt Drudge.

The thing is while so many are busy chanting "USA USA" they are not realizing the USA they are talking about is no more and a new one has arisen with nobody noticing. This one is a dream to a ruler, people thinking they are free even as they ask to have their freedoms taken away. I might find a link today or it may be a month. But when I find them I will show what I mean.

I am a huge Bill Maher fan, and rarely would I side with Trump over Maher.

But, Maher did offer 5 million to any charity of Trumps choosing if he sent him his Birth Certificate. Which trump did (as Maher admits and even showed on his show).

And, Maher refused to pay. If you are going to offer money to charity for a silly dare, you shouldn't back down, and Maher could certainly afford it. I know Maher does not like Trump, but it's not in good taste to make charity promises for the sake of a politcal joke, and then back out when Trump actally holds up his end of the bet.

WOW, that is low class. If I were Trump I would consider making that really public and donate the cash to my charity. Could be ten times that much in goodwill out of it.

There is a reason Trump had to withdraw his lawsuit.... He had no chance of winning.

Doubt it. Fiorina and Carson are flashes in the pan. They'll go down.

Fiorina is coming under scrutiny lately over the fact that most of the stuff that comes out of her mouth sounds good, but is actually total nonsense. She has a Brian Williams-exaggeration problem.

And Carson - who knows why he's doing well? He's such a weak candidate. If I were a religious man I'd be praying for him to get the nomination cause he'd be so easy for us to beat.

And Carson - who knows why he's doing well? He's such a weak candidate. If I were a religious man I'd be praying for him to get the nomination cause he'd be so easy for us to beat.

Scott Walker had a very short campaign

Two problems, after the first debate they lost
donors because Walker was a no show, almost.
And Walker has a pretty big ego, he was always
bragging before he announced that he has
always won every election he entered, and this
one would be no different. He didn't like being
1% in the polls and said screw it. He was way
out of his league and the campaign was almost
broke already.

Don't do that terapined. Dr Ben Carson, one of the top neurosurgeons at one of the top hospitals in the world, John Hopkins, became director of Pediatric neurosurgery at that top hospital. He obviously is a very brilliant man. Don't belittle his intelligence or achievements because you don't agree with his politics or political views. If you want to question his qualifications to be President, that's fine, but don't make light of his intelligence.

I'll bet he could post a one line statement in less than 5 tries :/

The problem with doctors is, they aren't very
good decision makers. They decide by getting
opinions of other doctors to see what they
think, then they go ahead. This is what Jimma
Carter did and what Obama does. It's why
Obama is called the 2nd and 3rd term of Carter.
They govern by asking advisers what should be
done and then going with the majority. This
is why Obama has so much free time to bowl
and play golf and shoot hoops. Insiders say
he's so out of touch he has somebody else do
the daily security briefing and they give him
the high points.

Comedy is subjective.

It is, but the bit makes no sense. What was he trying to prove? All Maher did was make a jackass out of himself.

Did he have a reason to think Trump was not born in the USA or would not show it?

That is to be expected in what is a combination of developing science and basic human arts. There is not much else to go on to make decisions, which they do every working day, sometimes under extremely trying and urgent circumstances.

Trump is boycotting FoxNews

I thought it odd on Monday that neither
Special Report or O'Reilly mentioned
Trump once. Then it happened again
last night, they had Rubio on and never
a mention of The Donald. They were
acting like Rubio was the most important
person in the race. O'Reilly, not a word
about Trump.

There was a really good NBC poll over the
weekend and Fox has totally ignored it
because it makes Trump look good. How
long can they keep this up, I wonder. I'm
sure Hannity talks about him but I can't stand
Hannity and never watch his show.

There's worse things than a doctor being a novice politician.

You want George Bush doing your brain surgery after a couple months practice?

Or anyone, really.

He was on The Tonight Show when he said it. It was clear to anyone with eyes and a brain (except for Trump) that he was joking.

There is a reason Trump had to withdraw his lawsuit.... He had no chance of winning.

If he had left it at his orangutan joke it would be funny. But once he promised money in exchange for a birth certificate he pushed it past a joke.

If you are going to play birth certificate chicken with donald trump, you should put money down you promised or else it just makes you look like the sour loser.

I like Maher, but I think he got carried away there, and I think he even sees that since he back peddled a little by the following week on his show saying he promised the money to a fictional charity, when he clearly said "any charity of Trumps choosing" on the Late show.

If you are going to promise money to a charity pay it, especially since Maher wants a vast increase in income taxes for the wealthy (and Maher is very wealthy), so under his ideal plan he would be losing more than 5 million anyway with what he makes, he should just pay the charity....

Maher is rich, and Trump is rich, Maher tried to out Trump, Trump and quickly had his bluff called, he should pay.

The whole premise is ridiculous anyway. No way
we're going to elect two black presidents back
to back, especially when the first one was such
an utter failure. As Babs pointed out, evangelicals
love Carson, that's where all his support is coming
from.

I didn't see it, but I think all bets thrown out like that verbally need to be reiterated by someone.

Like if someone here tosses out, "I bet $100 such and such will happen." Someone should confirm it at least once. So, you're saying you really want to bet such and such will happen? If the person says yes, then it's a serious bet, here or anywhere else, and I would shame them endlessly for welching.

Is that what happened?

Basically Maher was on Jay Leno, and made a joke about Trumps hair looking like an orange orangutan . But, then he went on to say he would pay 5milliom dollars to a charity of Trumps choice if he would provide his birth certificate to prove that he had a human birth.

Yes, it is true that is not legally enforcable, my only point is Maher put money on the table for charity and then when Trump called him out and provided the documents, Maher backpeddled.

If you are going to make a challenge like that you should pay when proven wrong (even more so if it's money for charity).

He never put money on the table for charity.

Here's a great summary of the Bill Maher/Donald Trump spat (note there is some NSFW language from Maher):

His actual quote from the Tonight Show regarding "charity:"

Quote:

I'm willing to offer $5 million to Donald Trump - that he can donate to a charity of his choice - 'Hair Club For Men,' 'The Institute For Incorrigible Douchebaggery' - whatever charity.

Now if anyone seriously think he was offering money to charity, they should not be consuming comedy....

I think Trump has an expiration date. He's
too used to not having any kind of filter
on his mouth, and it just won't continue
to fly. If he gets attacked by anybody,
he doubles the severity of the attack
on them. As time goes on people will
see he can't be taken seriously, too much
of a loose cannon. Eventually the polls
will start to tighten and Trump will implode
because his mouth will be out of control.

I don't like Cruz. I do like Rubio the best
out of the rest of the field at this point.
It's looking like Rubio and Biden. Hillary
looks worse every day, she's losing donors,
losing support, her poll numbers are
cratering. They're finding email on the
server she wiped, and that could be
the proverbial nail in the coffin for her.

This is Trumps campaign button:

Agreed about Trump. They just put a poll up today asking Americans "If they can see Candidate X as President". Trump's numbers were the worst in that question formation; 29% Yes, 69% No. But the same poll had a majority of No's for everyone on it. Hillary had the "best" Yes to No proportion at 47Y 52N, and Jeb! was the best among Republicans at 40Y 57N. So I think that's demonstrating a ceiling to his support among Republicans, and Hillary's probably beating all of them head-to-head still, at least among this group.

I'm guessing, too, the only reason you like Rubio is that no one's taken him seriously enough yet to detail some of his shortcomings. He's my Senator, and let me tell you Ernie, he is a rock, not a rock star, whether you're talking his personal finances, constituent services, or Senate record. He's going to do one of those flameout arcs, but it isn't his turn in the barrel yet.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Rubio looks good and sounds good, just
like Obama in 2008. Obama had the most
pitiful non achieving background of any
candidate in the last 60 years and he won.
Looking good and sounding good mean
everything.

I'm wearing thin on Trump's antics. Fox
cancels his appearance on O'Reilly and
tries to reschedule, and Trump immediately
over reacts. Too many years surrounded
by too many 'yes' men will give you no social
skills for how to deal with life's realities.

Yup. The facts remain on the record, even for the devotees of "Seinfeld" and "Friends" who offer three subjective agenda-driven "indexes" as definitive.

As expected, the index you want to believe in is the one that fits your agenda, which is what? Gun ownership?
