A conference in London in the summer of 2005 came up with this list of 50 films that every child should see before the age of 14.

I know I haven't seen the majority of the foreign films, and I haven't sat through The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938 version or The Night of the Hunter. I'm sure I would not have ranked Some Like it Hot ahead of the Jungle Book. I'm surprised that Bambi, Pinnochio, and Fantasia didn't make the cut. I think Ladyhawke (1985), and Forest Gump (PG-13 ) were some of the best fables of the last three decades.

No Lion King, Aladdin, Harry Potter, Spiderman or Jurassic Park. Not to mention the PIXAR film The Incredibles which was released in 2004. I didn't like the Lord of the Ring movies, so I would much rather a kid read the books, but many people thought those movies were good.

Any thoughts?

Bambi is the one Disney movie I've seen I recall little about. Pinocchio is like a horror film for kids, it gave me nightmares way back when. Ladyhawke was ok, except for the massive ignorance of the hero, who should know when an eclipse is being described.

For the rest, any list of movies people should see or books they should read is merely a list of prejudices and biases of one group or another. Remember the AFI lists of "best" movies fo the XX Century?

I agree "The Incredibles" is a ggreta animated movie, though not as clear in its theme as "Ratatouille."

As for the Lord of the Rings, you sir are a sadist :P

Subscribed to this so I can find it later. I agree such lists are suspect in a way, but I have a notion some of the foreign films I need to see. An amazing local video store has everything on the list I bet.
