He appeared to have a good life. I loved his character on Hogans Heros. Amazing from the article he kissed over 20,000 women on famly feud and one of the women he kissed who he didn't know he married ten years later.

So THAT'S why he was busy kissing all those ladies!
Scouting for a good kisser!
at least he outlived his life expectancy
Where did you read that it was definitely from smoking?

Regardless of the facts in this case, anti-smoking extremists will claim the death of anyone who ever smoked even one drag from a cigarette died of smoking.

I don't quite understand the point of that argument Nareed. He was a known smoker.

The point is that there are people who have never touched a cigarette who die from lung cancer, and people who smoke a long time and die of something that may or may not have been caused by smoking, cause is not always clear in these things. There is an anti smoking agenda that leads to blaming nicotine for maybe more deaths than it really causes by blaming all of these marginal or unclear cases on smoking.
They are just jealous of all the other health benefits that you get from smoking cigarettes.

I understand that argument 100%.
But when people says things like "Oh, the anti-smoking activitists, blah blah blah" isn't that just a way to distract the conversation from the real argument?
Fact - Richard Dawson smoked
Fact - Richard Dawson had a cancer that can be caused by smoking
Logical Conclusion - Richard Dawson's cancer could have been caused by smoking
Just pointing out a logical fallacy in someone's argument, that's all...

Exactly.
I'm not claiming smoking s good for you, or that it's harmless, or that quitting smoking doesn't provide a host of health benefits soon. But in the end a risk factor is just a risk factor.
Not to mention that it's rude to highjack a thread expressing sympathy for a beloved entertainer to push some agenda.

Quit being ridiculous. Smoking is not just a 'risk factor', but by FAR the most common cause of many types of cancer. Of course for any one individual you cannot with certainty say that smoking caused the cancer, but you'd be right far more often than wrong.
Quote: odiousgambitIn the DC area the DC government has opted for scare tactics in their current anti-smoking campaign. You should see these things!
If they are the commercials I am thinking about, they are not local but national or at least regional. I know I cab barely stand to watch them. Not at all like the anti-smoking ones I remember as a kid. Between sick relatives and all the educational ads I never picked up with smoking. When I was high school age snuff was the bigger thing. For that I didn't need education as to me snuff is more disgusting than cigarettes, and snufff users more inconsiderate.
RIP Mr. Dawson

I value intellectual honesty very highly, don't you?

I propose that you are the one being ridiculous. Aren't you a doctor? Is this as rigorous as you get? He was a smoker therefore he died of smoking?

This is going to hurt me to write, but....
Being a smoker DECREASES your chance of having nausea and vomiting post-operatively.

Wow, there we go. Now I feel bad about suggesting that you are not rigorous in your medical practice.

There, there...
BTW, I don't vouch for this at all, but I overheard a Swiss or Austrian tourist at Magnolia's say that smoking might reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease.

You are correct. Those that have died from smoking related heart disease and cancers do not complain about Parkinson's........
"He didn't die from smoking. He died while chasing his lighter in the street."
I'm sure I'm forgetting something though.
I'm not going to get into the smoking angle of this, because I don't want to overshadow the fact that he brought a lot of joy to this game-show enthusiast.
Quote: WizardI watched Family Feud with Richard Dawson hundreds of times and think he was an outstanding host. As I understand it, he played a gambler on Hogan's Heros, but I never got into that show. He probably would have been my favorite character if I had.
I loved Hogan's Heroe's. He wasn't a "gambler" but more of a pickpocket, safecracker, and guy wise to the gambling life. He would be closer to a bookie than a gambler.
