I have a client that wants me to do some scouting of several of the old NLV casinos such as Jerry's Nugget, the horns, and Poker Palace. I have heard some interesting stories about those places. Is there any security concern about these areas at night? I don't care about homeless and annoying people, or how dirty the casinos are, just how safe the actual properties are at night.

What exactly do you mean by security/safety? You're much more likely to be pick pocketed on the strip than accosted in North Las Vegas.

I went to all of the North Las Vegas properties at night (after midnight) in October of 2010. That's Poker Palace, Lucky Club, Bighorn, and Jerry's Nugget (Cannery, Santa Fe Station, and Aliante Station as well, but those are quite nice). Longhorn is on Boulder Highway in Henderson. I was a little uneasy going into Poker Palace, but the casino actually had a bit of a fun vibe. It's sure not the Strip crowd out there, but after I'd been in the casino I felt perfectly comfortable walking back out to my car. Big Horn was about the same as Poker Palace to me: rough folks trying to have a good time, nobody trying to cause trouble. Jerry's was a bit nicer, so was Lucky Club.

There's Silver Nugget and Opera House, too. Poker Palace is fun and they have true 3:2 $1 blackjack. Try a cheeseburger from the snack bar. The cafe is good too.

Exactly what I was looking for, thank you for the post. I am not concerned about a rough crowd. I just wanted to make sure I was not walking into a place with a known lack of security.

The horns have decent BJ rules and Bighorn has decent pen coupled with decent rules making it one of the better low limit games in Vegas, but that area is pretty bad as is Jerry's nugget. I guess the casino's themselves are safe, although I think both Horns, security consists of one guard that I suspect any criminal would find unthreatening. I have walked the boardwalk in AC at 4 am many times. I have walked from Sugarhouse casino in a pretty bad section of Philly to my home at the time in the center city Philadelphia district late at night and I frequently walk the strip at all hours of the morning as I have lived a block off the strip for the last 2.5 years. Although I play a number of north vegas Local casino's once a month including several on your list, I would not be comfortable at any after about 8pm. Bighorn casino is in a heavily Latino populated area and caters to the locals. Often when I visit, I am the only person in the casino speaking English. Forgive me if that is a politically incorrect statement. Not meant to infer anything about spanish speaking folks, just saying if you are not one, you can feel a little intimidated and out of place at this location. I find Lucky Club, Silver Nugget to be just a bit safer than Jerry's Nugget and Bighorn and have never played at Poker palace. For what it's worth, I have seen several news accounts of shootings that occurred inside or at NLV casino's during my 2.5 years of living in Vegas, including one old west style shootout that took place inside Silver Nugget.

A word of warning about the homeless. Don't take them too lightly, especially in an area like NLV. They are not JUST annoying. Some are dangerous drug addicts and/or alcoholics that will hold you up or attack you to get money for their next fix. And from my experience, you are likely to find more of this 'crackhead' type homeless in NLV. The strip area and downtown are populated by more of the alcoholic type although this is just a generalization on my part. I don't think you should consider any homeless folk harmless.

You might feel a bit out of place, depending on your background. Oh, well. That's not a new or terrifying experience for a lot of people. Just be smart and it's no big deal - dress down, don't flash excess money, don't get in anyone's face. Pretty much the same rules you'd use in any new place. I could believe that the homeless folks in NLV would be more desperate than the ones in other parts of town. I'd also bet that they don't hassle the locals. So, dress like a local and not a tourist and you're good to go.

I was at the Poker Palace pretty late one night I think my friend and I were the only white people gambling at the time. We had a great time but its safe to say were out of place for sure. I never felt unsafe as you can see I wanted to get this great photo before we went on to the next dive on the tour that night.
