LOL! How does that work in Washoe county? It's legal, right? Is it a problem at other casinos as well?

It's not legal in Clark (Vegas), Washoe (Reno), or Douglas (Tahoe). Carson City municipality, too.

Casino: Fallon Nugget

Today's chip comes from the Nugget casino in Fallon, NV. Fallon is home to the top gun program, and they're more than just a little bit proud of it. I really like Fallon. I'm not quite sure why, but it feels almost like home to me. I guess, except for the giant naval air station, I did grow up in a relatively similar small town. The Fallon nugget opened in 1963, and is home to 143 slots, 2 poker tables (and 2 additional tournament tables), and 1 BJ table. Fallon Nugget is a casino that I missed on my initial pass through northern Nevada (the ACG listed it as slots only), and I just picked up this chip last week when I was in northern NV. I'd intended to play poker to kill time, but I missed the start of the tournament and there was no cash game. So I played BJ instead. I won $40 in one shoe of mostly $5 bets, so I was pretty happy. The game is loose and friendly, but not sloppy. The dealer was more than happy to give (mostly-correct) BS advice to a couple struggling players, and she even let them change their plays when they made the wrong sign. But, she didn't flash any cards, and she protected her own hand very very well. All in all, I was very impressed by the game. I'd sort of expected a sweat the money experience like at some other small northern Nevada casinos. Then when it became clear that this wasn't going to be like that, I expected the game to be a giant mess like at some small southern nevada casinos. It wasn't that either. it was just...good.

My chip is from the 1997 series, and it nicely underscores Fallon's love of Top Gun. It's a Paulson top hat & cane, though the imprint is somewhat awkwardly covered by the inlay. Here's a link to the MOGH page for the casino. It looks to me like this chip is the same as the 1989 series, but with a different inlay. Also, presumably for the poker game, a $50 cash chip exists. It looks to me like that chip is sort of a gunmetal/blue color. Is that standard for $50 chips?

According to that MOGH page, it's actually a purple chip with lavender and pink inserts. Either way, I don't think there's a "standard" for $50 chips.

And I wouldn't think the $50 chip is for poker. A place that small probably only offers $1/$2 and/or $2/$4. Even big strip casinos rarely use anything other than $1 and $5 chips and $100 bills on those low stakes tables.

I find it interesting that some of the chips on the page seem to suggest that the name of the place is "Fallon Nugget" while other's seem to suggest that the name is "Nugget", located in Fallon.

Yeah. About a week ago. That was the last casino Doc entered before his vacation.

That comes up a lot with the Nuggets, I think. MOGH has them filed under "Nugget, city" while the Nugget website has a big "welcome to city Nugget" at the top of each casino's page.

I think the '70s vintage chip is beautiful, with "Nevada" and dice & cards imprinted. I'm finding that I'm not a fan of loud/modern chip designs (not that I won't collect them, but...)

Thanks rdw4potus, I really like your Fallon Nugget chip.

The thing that cracks me up is the "anchor". What good would that be in Nevada?

I wonder if the image of the F-14 fighter is protected by trademark? Does the casino have to pay Grumman Corp., or the U.S. Navy for the rights to the image?

Earlier this month, I stayed at Hooter's. They gave me a room in their Ocean View tower. My other option was a room in the Bay View tower.

My actual view was of the Tropicana parking lot.

More confusingly, the Fernley Nugget also just goes by "Nugget." I have a mug from them and it just says "Nugget Casino." Okay...

Even MORE confusingly, John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks often forgoes the John Ascuaga part and just calls itself "The Nugget." That is mostly limited to marketing and promotions, though. Officially, they are JA's Nugget.

LASTLY, there is the Nugget in downtown Reno, which also calls itself just "Nugget!"

Don't even get me started on Parumph Nugget. At least that's in a different part of the state.

(I want to start a Nougat casino. Bowls of chewy candy at every table.)

Casino: Headquarters Bar

Today's chip comes from the Headquarters Bar in Fallon, NV. Headquarters Bar lies approximately 50 yards south on Maine St. from the Fallon Nugget, and the gaming enterprise shares the same ownership. I mentioned the Headquarters Bar about a week ago because their table has the oddest hours I've ever heard of. It's open from 11pm-5am Wed-Sun. The table is staffed by the dealers from the Nugget.

The Headquarters Bar Casino opened in 1987. It has about 10 gaming machines and 1 BJ table. It's kind of an odd bar. It's so very small that even small fluctuations in headcount create giant diferences in available space. When I first arrived around 9pm, the place was packed (about 20 patrons) and I was told that the table opened at 11. So I drove to Fernley and back (Fernley Nugget's table games had their grand opening last weekend, I narrowly missed them). When I returned to Fallon, there was one patron at the bar. They did open the table at around 11:30, and I played until about 12. The dealer begged me to stay, but it was much later than I'd wanted to stay out. I'm not sure if their "crowd" ever did show up.

There are two series of $5 chips, but I think they retired the 1987 series when they put the 2012 series in play. As you can see from the image, my 2012 vintage chip is pretty similar to the Fallon Nugget's chip. It's missing the anchor, and the plane image is different, but they sure are similar. Same odd overlapping inlay, where the tophat and cane are covered up.

About anchors, a Naval Air Station is a base for use by Naval Aviation. This means mostly carrier-based aircraft and helicopters, but it may also involve Marine Corps aircraft (usually the same used by the Navy, though the US Marines fly or flew AV-8B Harriers while the Navy never did).

The anchor is one of the more traditional US Navy. A casino near a NAS, pressumably catering to Naval personnel and the ancillary civilian staff, would naturally try to make a connection with that clientele.

Casino: Horseshu

Today's chip comes from the Horseshu casino in Jackpot, NV. It's a Paulson H&C design, from the 1987 series. The casino opened in 1972, but MOGH only shows this one series of chips. I suspect that they only added tables in 1987. That might make some sense, since they're right by and affiliated with Cactus Pete's. In fact, Casino City does not list any tables at the property currently. Not that their accuracy is all that great, but I wonder if that means that Horseshu pulled their tables back out since I visited. The chip face features an upward-pointing horseshoe. I always thought there was a superstition about the direction of a horseshoe, but wikipedia is just telling me that they're used to ward off witchcraft.

I visited Horseshu after I visited Casino 93 and Cactus Pete's. My notes say I lost $15 playing BJ. I remember thinking that the casino was much smaller than it looked from the outside (it's about 3,000 sqft), but that it still didn't feel crowded (there's about 100 machines). I almost stayed at Horseshu, but decided instead to load up on caffeine and drive to Wendover for the night.

Edit: I wrote this last night, but apparently never actually pushed "post." This is Thursday's chip of the day. I'll post friday's this evening.

That's an interesting spelling: Horseshu.

While the U in the name resemples a horseshoe, it doesn't resemble the one in the logo, so it makes me wonder why they spelled it that way...

Jackpot NV is an interesting town (as indicated in your post about Cactus Pete's).

Check out a street map of Jackpot. Many of the streets are named after gambling related items. But not necessarily casino items. For example, there is a Pinochle Street.

Col. Potter was right according to the old timers. When I was a kid (Korean war era) most barns, rustic shops and garages had horshoes over the doors for 'luck'. They were always open side up, to keep the luck from running out.

My cousin is a farrier and I've always wondered why a horseshoe is considered lucky. It ain't lucky for the poor horse who has to stand still while someone nails metal to their hooves so they can carry the extra weight of a rider!

Apparently the Binion Family horseshoe was turned the wrong way.

I would point it towards the ground so that if my luck did "escape" it could travel less far away than if the shoe were pointed skyward.

Casino: Hotel Nevada

Today's chip is from the Nevada Club/Hotel Nevada. I've gone with the Hotel Nevada name, since that's what's on the chip. It's a real pain to look for info, since neither "nevada club" or "hotel nevada" is anything approaching a unique search string.

I've been to this property twice. I stopped in at about 8pm on a sunday - on the day I went to Jackpot - but the table was closed. The cashier looked at me like i was crazy to think that the table might be open on a sunday night. So I returned a couple weeks ago on a saturday night. The table was open, so I played a bit. There was a group of nice young guys playing the game. They were joking back and forth, and trying to include the dealer in the banter. She was too busy trying to make it obvious that she'd rather be anywhere else to care. That made for a strange atmosphere. I've heard that they also have a 1 drink per hour comp rule, which is a bit unusual. For the most part, I enjoyed my play. I did have one very bad incident in my short time at the casino. I got a blackjack, and the floor supervisor* said "you see that those whites come back over here, now." I smiled and nodded, but didn't bet them for the dealer. She said "jackass. I can see what kind of night this is going to be." I played out the shoe, tipped $12, leaned toward the dealer and said "please don't share with that asshole" and left.

* I'm not actually sure what the role of this woman was. she was definitely an employee, but it's not like a single table requires oversight and she was more watching TV than watching the game.

My chip is - surprise of surprises - a Paulson top hat & cane. MOGH says it was from a series that was produced in "the '80s."

Yes. A Washington Post article called it the worst place in the country. After reading rw's account, I'm not sure I disagree.

A good reason to always bet even $10 increments at BJ.

Something tells me the same thing applies in Elko, Winnemucca, and other towns, which are objectively nicer (or at least have nicer casinos) than Battle Mountain, which is still a hole.

Casino: Hotel Nevada

Today's chip comes from Hotel Nevada in Ely, NV. Hotel Nevada is a beautiful old building. The casino opened in 1929, and the outside is kind of stunning. I'm pretty sure it's the largest and most architecturally interesting building in Ely. Hotel Nevada has 175 slot machines on the main floor, and a table games/poker room in the basement that houses 3 BJ tables, 1 poker table, and 1 TCP table. The table games were closed at the time I drove through town. it was during normal operating hours, but there was "no demand" so they were closed. Saying there's "no demand" to a guy who just asked if he could play BJ is a little insulting, but whatever. This is one of the very few casinos when I played no games whatsoever in order to collect my chip - I just bought it at the cashier.

I drove through Ely the day after I visited Battle Mountain, Jackpot, Wendover, et. al. I drove a big 2-day loop from Harvey's to Wendover and back to Carson City (on the night I mentioned a couple days ago when I couldn't stay awake to drive back to Harvey's). They say that US 50 is the loneliest road in America. I can attest to that. I don't think I crossed more than a dozen people on the drive from Ely to Fallon. I also don't think I've ever experienced a drive that long where there's just *nothing* there. It's a very pretty drive, but WOW is it desolate. It's about 260 miles from Ely to Fallon, and with the elevation changes and climbs involved, it just about took a full tank of gas in my crappy little rental car. I was a little scared about that as the needle kept falling and falling on the gauge.

My chip is a 1987 vintage Paulson H&C. My chip, even after my half-assed male attempt at cleaning it, is still filthy. I've included a link to MOGH's pristine chip sample from the same series. I did just order a set of "dentists tools" from The Duluth Trading Company so that I can actually clean my chips before I put them in cases and hang them in my home office. I'm kind of excited to see how that goes - except that I keep getting discouraged by the sheer number of chips that need cleaning.

MOGH's much prettier chip

I thought about that. I've considered two approaches:
1. I could start with an easily replaceable chip or a duplicate. I could do the Bellagio, or one of my two Wynncore chips.
2. I could do this chip from Ely. I can't possibly make it worse. Eeeeewww, this thing is gross!

Crap! yes. I even told Doc I'd cover it. Then, I guess because I was fascinated by Fallon Nugget and Headquarters Bar so much, I missed the casino that should've come between them. I guess now I'll just hold off on it and do it with Fernley Nugget and whatever else is available once Doc is done with his chips in the Spring.

The Model T casino in Winnemucca opened in 1970, and is attached to the Quality Inn. It kind of reminds me of the Wild Wild West in Vegas. Sure, you CAN go there just for the casino, but I didn't get the impression that anyone really does that (except me). the property has 175 machines and 4 tables. 1 TCP, 2 BJ and 1 UTH. I thought UTH was an interesting choice for such a small and remote place, but I was happy to see it.

I missed the Model T on my first trip to Winnemucca last year, because my sources indicated that it didn't have tables. I returned 2 weeks ago to collect my chip. When i first arrived at the property, the tables were closed. So I drove to Battle Mountain & collected the Hotel Nevada chip first and hit Model T on the way back to Fallon. I played UTH for about 4 minutes. The dealer was very nice, but it was his first day dealing cards anywhere ever. He was really struggling with things like hand and even card rankings. I had to help him quite a bit since the floor seemed to be busy with other things much of the time. I'm not sure if dealer school isn't a requirement up there, or if he was maybe better on BJ, but it was kind of scary when i had to keep reminding him that queens are higher than jacks. All in all, I left even after my session. Model T is a quaint place, and the table games pit was actually kind of nice.

I'm running out of ways to say this part: my chip is from 1985, is a paulson top hat and cane, and is kind of dirty even after an attempted cleaning. I wish I could promise to stop saying that in the coming days, but I'd just be lying...

R, did you ever get to Gold Dust West in Elko?

Crap! yes. I even told Doc I'd cover it. ... I guess now I'll just hold off on it...

Why? This thread isn't really in aplhabetical order. That's what the index on the original post is for.

Fair point. And that reminds me. I also told Doc I'd make a table of the chips that I've posted.

That's not necessary.

Someone has been keeping the main index up-to-date.

Any idea whay it's named "Model T"?

Some car names could be applied to casinos, especially if themed, but Model T seems like a rather odd choice.

Casino: Gold Dust West

I missed posting the chip for Gold Dust West in Elko last week. It should have fallen alphabetically between Fallon Nugget and Headquarters Bar, but I got caught up with those properties being next to each other. So I'm going to cover Gold Dust today, instead. Gold Dust West in Elko is a rare new casino in northern Nevada. It opened in 2007. There are 350 slots and 6 table games. This was another case where my guide didn't mention the tables. I happened to stop in because the building was so large that it seemed silly that there would only be slots. The pit has 1 craps table, 1 TCP table, and 4 BJ tables. I played BJ for about 30 minutes before moving on to the other Elko casinos - and later the casinos in Jackpot and Wendover. The blackjack game was surprisingly crisp, and the players were pretty good. That was a big departure from what I'd seen in Winnemucca earlier in the day (and what I'd see later in the other Elko casinos). I suppose Gold Dust may have attracted the best dealers from the other Elko casinos when it opened.

My chip is a Paulson top hat and cane, and was issued when the casino opened in 2007. It's like that's a popular mold or something - who knew? I think that brown and tan might be the most boring accent colors that I've seen yet. The casino was not as drab as the chip colors might suggest.

I've just invested in a digital camera, and I'm going to retake pictures of my chips over the next several days. As I take them, I'm going to replace my Photobucket files. There may be a broken link or two as i complete that process. Also, some past conversations may become moot as the image being discussed will be replaced. I'm fed up with too-dark, too-blurry cell phone camera pictures, so I'm going to attempt to create better images.

We stopped in at the Elko GDW on our way to South Dakota in August...nice place...however it was painfully obvious that the building used to be a department store, lol.

It is a warehouse casino. But they did a nice job. Easily the class of Elko (although that ain't sayin' much).

When I was there at 2 P.M. on a weekday, a cattle baron was making table max bets and ordering shots of Canadian Mist whiskey. That's the first time I've ever seen anybody purposely order that drink. He was indeed a hoot.

Oddly, no. This one would be Gold Dust East, otherwise. Carson would be South or West, I guess, and Reno would be...ummm...North? (I'm not sure if it's actually north of Elko) But they're all Gold Dust West. It's also very strange to me - not as strange as actually wanting Canadian Mist - that the Reno facility is slots only while the others have tables. That's the opposite of what I'd have expected.

What was the max? $200? $500?

No, I don't think you posted that before. Do tell -- did they make you leave for one day a month like most hotels? Did you negotiate a rate with them, or was it comped?

Think the maximum at GDW-Elko was $300-$500. Anyway, the cattleman was betting chunky black.

State: Nevada
City: West Wendover
Casino: Montego Bay

Today's chip is from the Montego Bay casino in West Wendover, NV. It's across the border from Wendover, UT which was home to Wendover Air Base (where the atomic B-29s trained). The base is now an attraction of sorts with tours available, and it's marketed as a "ghost town" though I wonder how the actual residents of Wendover feel about that one.

Montego Bay opened in 2002, and is home to 800 slot machines and 39 gaming tables. I was beyond exhausted when I visited Montego Bay and the other West Wendover casinos at the end of the day that saw me visit Winnemucca, Elko, and Jackpot as well. Walking into Montego Bay was...interesting. I'm very surprised to learn that the casino opened in 2002, because the decor is based on everything that was wrong with the late '70s. The only surfaces that aren't mirrored are neon. Montego Bay is a Peppermill property, and the decor is similar to the other Peppermill casinos in Northern Nevada. I think I mentioned the other day that we were coming up to a string of casinos where I'd have embarrassing stories to tell (I may have edited that line out - but it's true). That streak starts today. I walked directly into a mirrored wall at Montego Bay. At full speed. While looking forward. It's not that I didn't know there was a mirror there, it's just that my mind told me it was 10 feet farther back than it actually was. I managed to keep my feet, but that hurt both my pride and my forehead.

My Montego Bay chip is - I know you'll be surprised - a Paulson TH&C. The casino has issued only one series of chips, and my chip is from that inaugural 2002 series.

Not to hijack the thread or anything...nah, i just went back to back offers with a friend, so we'd switch rooms every few days.
I actually really like CC, if in could find work there, I'd move in an instant...

Never mind, we are just adding to the post cost. That's an interesting strategy. So like 5 days/5 days for two whole years? That's quite a feat without them catching on.

Funny you say you like CC, since I applied for a job with the Nevada Supreme Court. I was having trouble envisioning myself living in Carson City. I gather most people commute from Reno (is that any better?) Never heard back from them after filling out their LONG application...
