Although this comes from NASA, I gotta credit today's Anthony Curtis' LVA News for this info and link.

NASA Satellite Shows Vegas' Sprawl: It's been 28 years since NASA launched Landsat 5 and an image series compiled in honor of the satellite's 28th birthday shows Las Vegas' massive growth in the intervening years. (The large red areas are green space, mostly golf courses and city parks.)

Maybe it's me, but I couldn't figure out where the Strip is until McCarren's runways became more obvious. Then I had to replay it. Now the strip is obvious, but tends to disappear towards the end of the series.

Kinda cool.

People been saying for decades that its cheap to raze some desert scrubland and put up a development, particularly when banks would lend on it and take only that project as collateral. Now as for the strip disappearing: I know that it used to be the only reason anyone came to the middle of the mojave desert was for the gambling. Now it seems upscale restaurants, pool parties and a ferris wheel are supposed to be the reasons. Never mentioned is anything about free-flowing booze and readily encountered amiable females as a reason.

But "the strip tends to disappear" may be prophetic words when every community in the nation has an Indian casino or an Internet Cafe in it and the words Las Vegas are emblazoned in slogans relating to the machines or the girls. Despite recent headlines of declining revenues for Indian casinos, the greatest growth has been in Alabama Indian Casinos which is hardly a surprise since there are no competitive casinos there... yet.

So if the Strip remains visible in this sea of alternative attractions, it just may be that the unsung hero will soon be recognized: The Pornslapper!

Flea -

I wasn't trying to be prophetic or poetic. Merely an observation.

However, that's a very interesting way of describing things.

Where are these headlines? Its not in my area,
Indian joints are doing gang buster business,
paying off debts in record time, building new
hotels, and expanding casino floor space.
