Just finished reading about the judges kid that robbed the casino in Vegas and it brought back a memory of an event that happened in Windsor after the tempory Casino opened there.

They opened a tempory casino while building what is now Caesars Windsor. It was in the old Art Gallery down on the riverfront. One night a older gentleman late 60's I believe he was had a dream night playing blackjack.( for me it would have been a dream night at least) This fella after playing all night was able to cash out for $12,000 ..... which he took in $1000 bills( something they don't have anymore) After cashing out he headed out to his car and started his drive home. He lived out in the county about 20 miles maybe a little more away from the casino. His route home took him along a dark country road which has homes along it but they are spaced out a bit. As he drove this road late at night a car that was behind him ran into his cars rear end. Not thinking he stopped and got out. When he did the fella that ran into him came out and robbed him of his winnings. That guy turned around his car and sped off. The older fella went home and called police to report his robbery. Police reports were filed in, descriptions of the robber given. Since the robber knew he had a large sum of money, which the fella told them he had won at the casino the police attended the casino to see if video cameras might have caught something to help them out. Sure enough the cameras did, they saw a man matching the discription they had been given following the guy to the cash cage and out into the parking area.....they now knew what the fella looked like but had no name.

A while later ( not sure if it was a few weeks or a month) they still had not found the robber.....but that was about to change. The police received a non-related call and attended a seen to check out reports they had from a couple of guys. Seems a few guys out fishing on River Carnard noticed somthing in the water and alerted the local police department. A tow truck was called in and a vehicle that was hidden just below the river top was pulled out. Inside was a mans body matching the discription of the robber. Upon further searching the police discovered 12 $1000 bills stuffed into the deceased mans socks. They later learned that this mans family in Michigan had reported him missing around the time of the robbery. You see in all the excitement of this robbery and thinking he had just hit the lottery this fella forgot while driving out that a mile down the road from where he robbed this guy the roadway took a sharp right turn along the river and drove straight into at high speeds.

Goes to show Crime doesn't pay
The fella that was robbed got his money back and a story that trumped his night at the table to go with it

Be careful out there folks

This sounds a lot like an urban legend to me.

Sure does but winners have been followed from even that Bingo every four seconds casino in Hawaian Gardens. Most crime takes place in the non camera covered restrooms it seems and in the bar areas but its easy to spot a winner and follow an exuberant drunk to his hotel room. Every now and then incidents do make the papers ... crime is everywhere.

I seem to remember reading the story in the local paper at the time it happened. If I was still in Windsor I would go down to the libary and search their cache of old Windsor Star write ups for the story to post it here.

Found this while I looked for that story....a few other police cases involving people and the casino.....

Elsewhere, the evidence is abundant. Detective Mike Kelly of the Windsor police is working on
a case involving an employee who stole $4-million from a local manufacturer. ''He said it's all
gone to gaming and there is very little hope of recovery.''
Windsor recorded a dramatic case last year, when Carmen Lauzon, a Bank of Montreal manager,
was convicted of stealing $1.2-million from the accounts of clients at her branch. Ms. Lauzon got
a two-year jail sentence.

So these folks are committing crimes to fuel their addictions.....one has to wonder at what point the casino should be required to step up and report that a person who is feeding the machines MILLIONS while they know they only have a job at a local bank making $50,000 a year
