I've been seeing Halloween ads on TV since
last week and its still Sept. Now Food Network
has a new show called Halloween Wars that
starts Oct 2nd and runs all month. The media
and advertising is turning the whole month
of Oct into a long Halloween cluster f***. All
for a nothing day, a kids candy day that has no
significance or meaning whatever. Great.

I think over the last 4 or 5 years Halloween has become the second biggest holiday. There were always the people who hung the fake cobwebs or handkerchief ghosts in the dogwood trees, and of course there have always been the jack-o-lanterns by the front door, but I've been seeing more and more houses with elaborate ghoul-inspired decorations and strings of orange pumpkin-shaped lights around the windows or along porch railings, just like they would do for Christmas, and I believe I've even seen some of those big blow-up figures on lawns too, like witches or pumpkins or ghosts.

Door-to-door trick-or-treating, tho, in my area anyway, is on the decline. I still get a few kids ringing my doorbell, but only between 6pm and 8pm -- you can set your watch by them -- and they are always accompanied by one or more adults.

More schools and churches are opting to do what they call "trunk-or-treat" where the children gather in the parking lot of said school or church and the parents open the trunks of their cars to reveal buckets of goodies from which the kids can help themselves. The local mall has a couple of hours set aside for trick-or-treating too, so that the kids go from store to store for their candy and remain in a safe and controlled environment.

A bit off topic, but how do you say "trick or treat" in languages besides English? I think (with not much confidence) in Spanish they would say convídame o te asusto = invite me or I will scare you. When I was in Montreal I asked this question about what they say there, but the one person I asked didn't know.

Can any of our bilingual members cast any light on this?

My family and I go all out on Halloween. A big party every year. I love putting up the props and the whole nine yards. We have well over 100 trick or treaters each year.

I even like watching the scary movies. I also have to watch the movie "Young Frankenstein" each and every year as though it was "Scrooge" at Christmas. A Vincient Price movie is always a treat as well.

Now I'm seeing ad's all over the net for H'ween merchandise.
Go back to your youth, pretend your 9 again, decorate your
lawn and dress up as a douche bag, its Halloweenie... We had
about a dozen kids in their late teens show up last year, not
even in costume. My wife gave them candy, when I was manning
the door I told them to get lost. Gimmee a break..

Bob, you really are the "get off my lawn" type. In my day, which is not today's deal, guys like you paid: toilet paper strings thrown up into your trees and bushes, soaped windows, shall I go on? Back then the "trick" option was taken seriously.

In Boston, even girls in their mid twenties go out trick or treating.
I don't think they play tricks on those who don't give them candy but those costumes sure are treats.

From my co-worker, who is Mexican, they say it in English. So if you know no other English at all, you know 'trick or treat', at least that's what she says.

I've taken three days off to celebrate Halloween this year. It's by far, the most important high holy day of the year. I'll be staying at the Luxor! After all, everyone knows that mummies come from Egyptian pyramid schemes.
Someday, joor goin' to see the name of Googie Gomez in lights and joor goin' to say to joorself, "Was that her?" and then joor goin' to answer to joorself, "That was her!" But you know somethin' mister? I was always her yuss nobody knows it! - Googie Gomez

Halloween is a wild time in LV. The costume contests in the casino night clubs are an excuse for women to paint their bodies and basically walk around naked. (Evenbob would likely be offended.)

Regarding Evenbob, I suspect he was picked on a great deal as a kid for being short and annoying. He's bitter, hateful, friendless, and generally does not appear to care for mankind. He probably has to clean the egg and toilet paper off his house each year.

one thing for sure that is different today, the way the young adults get into the holiday, costuming out and partying. That was not going on in my neck of the woods when I was a kid.

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. These days it's more of a holiday for the adults than the kids. I like dressing up and heading down to my favorite pub for the festivities. Last year I stayed home and we had more kids than ever. We gave out 125 cups of candy (for the kids) and 75 Margarettas (for the adults).

The local McDonalds is already decorated.

Personally, I go all-out with decorations, but wait at least until 10/1 to set them up. Probably 10/9 this year. And they no longer get illuminated after 11/2. They come down on the first nice weather weekend after that.

This year, I've got an extra item planned. Rather than stick a scarecow on a pole, I'm gonna sit him in a lawn chair, in front of an old computer, complete with monitor, keyboard and mouse. There'd destined for the dump anyway, so might as well put them to one last purpose first.

I also put a couple small speakers on the roof, out of sight, playing spooky sound effects. Some kids won't come up my walk!

So true. But true for a variety of reasons.

Because paranoi runs wild, parents are less likely to let kids go door-to-door. If they do, then the parents scrutinize the load. Mot more often than not, parents drag the kids to the mall so they can get their candy from the stores.

Well, "convídame" translates better as "share with me."

In Mex City children will ring the bell and say "¡Queremos Halloween!" some carry around a plastic containter shaped like a jack'o lantern (however that's spelled) or a skull, and may say "¿Me da mi calaverita?" "Calaverita" means "little skull." But then Halloween isn't a local holiday, and it gets mixed with the feast of all saints and the day of the dead (ask someone else about that; I'm not Catholic).

If you don't get candy, or if you don't get an answer, it is deemed permissible to scrawl some variant of "cheap" on their door with chalk or a crayon. Some people deem it permissible to egg the front of the house. Less radical ones carry water ballooons or little paper sacks of wheat flour.

Finally, the name Halloween often gets translated as "Noche de Brujas," or "Night of the Witches." I've no idea why.

That's interesting, particular considering "Halloween" is short for "All Hallow's Eve" or something like that - i.e. the evening before All Saints Day.

There seems to be a good deal of "dressing up" these days: Dressed to the Nines parties, Edwardian Balls, an entire industry based on Vintage Clothing and recreations of vintage clothing. Corsets and the Tight Lacing practices particularly in the BDSM movements.

I enjoy the artistic pumpkins. They now have stencils you can buy to carve the orange parts, leaving the white for the light to shine through. A far cry from the traditional triangle eyes...

We love Halloween. Decorate up the front yard, drag the fire pit out and a bucket of iced down beers for the neighbors walking their kids around. We usually are in some semblance of costume, even if it's just a werewolf mask and gloves with jeans and a sweatshirt. Last year I made blood red margarita's and had the fog machine on high. Some of the little kids are scared by our display, but the older ones think it's cool.

I do have one rule - no costume, no candy (unless you're under a year old and being carried by your parents).

This is a first. I saw a Halloween display in Target yesterday,
on Aug fricking 7th! It was a hundred bags of candy corn
with witches on them flying across the moon.

You can tell the economy is hurting when they start pushing
Halloween in early August. I almost couldn't believe my eyes.

I only started hating it when adults started getting
involved in the 80's. They started have parties and
dressing up, which was just an excuse to make an
utter ass out of themselves. I first witnessed this
in the bar I had in 1979. We were over run by the
Gay bar down the street and they were all (all)
dressed in drag. How original. Apparently this gave
them license to get falling down, puking drunk.

Happened every year I was there, and other adults
started joining in. I never got it, I still don't get it.
When adults wear costumes they look like idiots,
yet they think they look cool. Talk about denial.

Dream on. Its called 'acting out' becuase they're so
miserable with who they really are. If only they
could be this fantasy character they get to pretend
they are once a year. Its a sign of the times we live
in, people are confused because life didn't turn out

THat has NOTHING to do with it. Geez. A lot of people just like dressing up like idiots or sluts because that's what they are. They just wanna party, but in a slightly different way than every other weekend of the year. Halloween on the whole is about having fun and getting scared. Getting scared releases endorphins in the brain. These endorphins create a feeling of pleasure. It's sort of like nature's heroin. That's what makes Halloween enjoyable.

It's also why a scary movie is the best kind of date movie.

Halloween is awesome, and it's much better simply having fun with that, rather than celebrating some stupid form of livelihood and having the obligation to buy gifts for practically everyone you know. Did I mention I hate Christmas now that I've grown up?

It very much has everything to do with it. Its
a very new thing, mostly in the last 30 years
or so. Nobody did it when I was growing up,
if an adult wore a costume on Halloween he'd
have been considered a whacko.

It has to do with it takes so much longer now
for kids to get out of adolescence. They say 30 is
now the end of it instead of 20. When I was a
kid if you tried to trick or treat past age 11, you
would get kicked off somebodies porch. Now
we have 'kids' in their mid 20's all dressed up
come to our house all the time on Halloween.

Nobody wants to grow up. Lets be 12 forever,
its so much fun. Always see pirates and vampires,
and it turns out those are the most popular
'acting out' costumes. The guys want to be
Johhny Depp and the girls want to be vampires.
Only they're 28, not 10.

In St. Louis we had an 18 year old come to our door. Huge kid, like 6'2, 200 lbs. He was just wearing an undershirt, no costume, asking for candy. We were too scared not to give him any...

I was 11 in 1960. My last year going was when I was
10, in 5th grade. And that was pushing it. Trick or
treat was always for the little kids, so they could get
dressed up and pretend. They were in those fun
years of 4-8 or 9, when you're growing out of being
a child into a pre adolescent. Now its been perverted
out of all meaning, its just a greedfest. Thats why you
see so many dark houses now. In the 50's there were
maybe 3 dark houses in a whole block. Now 75% are
dark, they can't afford to hand out $150 worth of candy
to local high school and college students.

I think you are making a gross overstatement by saying today's kids are not 'escaping' adolescence early enough. Times are different from when you were a kid Bob. Schools push higher education (Masters) down our students that there is no rush to find a job because we have to keep going to school. Furthermore, job requirements are much more demanding than when you were "growing" up. For example, to be a teacher 10 years ago one only needed a Bachelors degree and be en-rolled in a teaching program. Now, you need a year of graduate work, a handful of state tests, and "classroom experience" that can only be done through student teaching without pay...its nuts!!! I think our society puts too much emphasis on higher education that teens and young adults aren't given a chance to make a decent living without one.

When do you think I grew up, the 1920's? I went
to college, I paid for it all myself. And getting a
teaching job is different in different states. It fairly
easy to get a job in Mississippi or W Virgina or Ala.

This is typical of people who leave adolescence:

Leaving Home
Becoming Financially Independent
Completing School
Marrying
Starting a Family

This is typical of people stuck in extended adolescence:

Still live at home or in a home paid for by parents or other family member
Still rely on parents or other family member to cover living expenses in whole or part
Still be enrolled in school in some capacity
Single
No Children

Its rocking the foundations of our society because
we're seeing these people often never leave adolescence
at all. They go on some kind of extended welfare or
fake disability and are, at 45, still getting drunk in the bar
every weekend, waiting for their lives to start.

Dream on. Its called 'acting out' becuase they're so
miserable with who they really are. If only they
could be this fantasy character they get to pretend
they are once a year. Its a sign of the times we live
in, people are confused because life didn't turn out
lkie they were told it would.

kids costume on Halloween, are you?
