I don't think anybody has ever mentioned the casinos in New Orleans here. There's a big Harrah's casino there, and several small ones. Anybody ever been? We're thinking of passing through there this summer.

I've been to the Harrah's and it was nice, and a great location. That was before Katrina though.

My wife and I made a six-night driving trip last March that took us from NC to the Mississippi gulf coast, New Orleans, then up to Tunica before heading home. We made stops at 17 casinos along the way in support of my addiction to collecting souvenir $1 chips. Obviously, with that travel schedule I didn't spend a lot of time in any of the casinos, but I did play craps for at least a while in each one. (We met up with RaleighCraps and his wife for a while one evening at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS.)

We spent two nights in New Orleans and took time to visit Harrah's (within walking distance of our little hotel in the French Quarter), Treasure Chest on the north side, and Boomtown to the south. If I did my pre-trip homework correctly, the other casinos in the immediate area do not have table games.

Harrah's seemed to be geared to the tourists with the other two falling into the category of locals' casinos. On a Friday night, Harrah's tables had minimums priced above my comfort level, so I waited until Saturday morning for my session there. The minimums then were still higher than what I encountered the other two places. All three were nice facilities, as I recall, but at that time the access to Treasure Chest was very poor due to some construction in the area -- bridge repair or something. Had to ride a shuttle from a remote parking lot. I don't know whether that has improved.

As for your planned trip, I have long received recommendations not to visit New Orleans in the summer. Unless, perhaps, you really, really, like mosquitoes and stifling heat. I have never been there in the summer myself, so this is just a rumor that I have used for guidance.

We know a lady who went down to LA in Sept of 2005 to help out with the animal situation after Katrina. She lasted 36 hours and came home because the humidity was killing her. She still talks about it. On the show 'Billy the Exterminator', that takes place in LA, he has said several times he doesn't know why people live in the state when they don't have to. He has to live there because of the family owned business, but the heat and humidity are things he hates and says so. He's always covered in sweat, yuk.

Yea, I posted it in the Harrah's New Orleans thread located in the "Other Casinos" forum....

I live in New Orleans, so I frequent the local properties pretty often....If you want a lot of glitz and glamor, then go to Harrahs....if you want better hold % and cheaper minimums, go to Treasure Chest or Boomtown. Harrah's caters to upper-middle class tourists, so if you aren't playing with at least green chips, you won't get noticed....on weekdays, you might find a $10 table, but on weekends, all you will see is $20-$25 tables, and that includes craps! Boomtown, I believe, has 20X odds, and the Treasure Chest stands on soft 17, so those are both better than Harrah's. The thing that is great about Harrah's is it's location....right downtown, a few blocks from the French Quarter.....let me know if you have any questions.....
