If this is it, may she go peacefully.
Queen Elizabeth II has died. She was 96 years old.
In a statement sent to Insider, Buckingham Palace said the Queen "died peacefully at Balmoral" on Thursday afternoon.
"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," the statement added.
Now we have King Charles III. No one is certain what to expect from him.
The queen is dead, long live the queen.

Quote: MrVWhy do any countries still have "royalty" anyway, in this democratic era?
Simple anthropology. In societies a royal class will pop up. The USA has royalty in celebrities. Movie and sports. Muslim countries have them in the form of clerics. The Brits have their royal family, which the USA has to an extent adopted as our own. Not as much as in the 80s what with tabloids not what they were then. The masses need someone and something to look up to.
Quote: AZDuffmanThe Brits have their royal family,k]
The Royal Family and the property they own is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world. Great Britain makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year in tourism, they come from all over to see how Royals live. I was there in summer in the early nineties and we tried to go see some of the stuff couldn't get near it. The crowds were unbelievable and you had to have tickets. England has nothing but history, there are pubs there built in the 1600s from Old Forest Oak that are still open and because the wood has petrified they could be there for another one thousand years.

Shouldn't it be "The queen is dead, long live the king"?
Yes, It should. But it's not something we say often $:o)Quote: TumblingBonesQuote: MrVWhy do any countries still have "royalty" anyway, in this democratic era?

Personally, I'd capitalise the Q and K out of deference.
As a nation we will grief, walls of flowers are already appearing in Windsor, Buckingham Palace and Balmoral. Several events this week will now be cancelled as preparations are made for the mourning and state funeral.
It will be hard for most of us, who have only known the Queen, to change to things like "God Save The King". Also now we have a new monarch (which of course most of us have never experienced), new banknotes, coins and stamps will be needed.

I can see the history of some places but the royal-following I do not get. Remember the 80s and how Di and Ferggie would be on at least one of the tabloids weekly? The coverage they got? The night before the wedding Johnny Carson was showing all the stuff being sold related to it. It spilling to the USA shows the royalty worship being baked into human nature.
There's been scattered reports that she had COVID but I haven't heard much. But if she had a relapse, it could kill her off like all the other COVID deaths.

I don't think there'll be much rush to replace the currency. Our current plastic currency notes will take a long time to wear out and they won't be withdrawn for the fun of it.It will be interesting to see how soon the new currency and postage stamps will start to be issued.

I also hope there will be no rush, but they phase into King Charles banknotes as the Queen ones wear out.
Ironically the notes you've included are the former paper ones. The paper £20 and £50 stop being legal currency at the end of this month. The £5 and £10 already have been withdrawn. We're nearly finished moving to the newer ones. Currently Scotland still has £1 and £100 ones.Quote: Wizard...I also hope there will be no rush, but they phase into King Charles banknotes as the Queen ones wear out.

I thought the paper ones ceased being legal tender a while back, so thanks for that. Will always be accepted by banks.
I don't believe our American cousins have had the pleasure of Polymer Plastic currency. Virtually indestructible in normal use (Of course the can be burned or shredded), they have real downsides. They cling together and can be accidentally given away, and once folded, they won't lay flat for counting. Dipped in certain chemicals they can be bleached to give a worthless piece of clear plastic.
Our biggest note is the £50, ($58) which is hard to spend and rarely seen ( by me ) except in casinos.
Quote: EvenBobQueen Elizabeth was literally as old school as you could get. There are many who believe that now that she's gone this will diminish the monarchy greatly because people of her moral character are just not around anymore. It's now going to turn into one giant scandal sheet, more than it has been for the last 25 years. King Charles is not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, far from it. And it will show in how he reigns as king.

In other news.....
Our UK TV is totally dominated by some of the very British pomp and ceremony surrounding proclamations of the recognition of the new King.
Thanks to all for the respect that has been shown at this sensitive time.
For your amusement, there's an anecdote where a pair of American Tourists, came across Her Majesty taking a picnic in a secluded spot, escorted only by her bodyguards. The American didn't recognise her and asked her to take his photo, having also asked whether she'd ever met the Queen.

I assume there will be a special set with King Charles's image on it (and let's not forget Queen Camilla - is that styling correct?), although I also assume there will be a "standard" image similar to the Machin Definitives for the Queen at some point.
As for coins, I remember getting coins with George VI on them (and marked "One Shilling") when I was in England in 1987. Also remember that Canada, Australia, and a number of other Commonwealth countries have to change their coins as well.

Did you know...
... Each time we have a change of monarch, the portrait on our coins will face in the opposite direction to the last one.
H.M the queen looks to the right on our coins. King Charles's portrait will look to the left.
Charles has featured on some commemorative special coins, but he has not yet even sat for his portrait for currency, so that is some way off.
Our 'paper currency' and that of Australia is not paper but a very tough, thin, polymer sheet. It lasts a VERY long time compared to paper money. It's also a Pain in the Ar5e, because of the way notes cling together and will not lay flat once it's been folded. You can't even iron ( press? ) it, because it would melt.
I don't believe Queen Consort Camilla, as she is to be officially known, will feature on any coins.

As has been said, up until now, there has been continual reporting on British TV and newspapers; so it's hard not to feel emotional. Amongst all the coverage, there have been some great moments, especially when the royals have gone on unscripted walkabouts - the response from the crowds has been so supportive towards them.
There will be some formal events, including today's proclamation of the new King, finishing up with the funeral and committal on Monday 19th.

Our paper money is not paper either, but a blend of cotton and linen, like clothing. That's why it holds up well after going through the wash in a pocket.
I like it when countries make the larger notes larger in size. I believe they do that for the Euro.

Did the Queen Mother ever appear on coins? Stamps, maybe, and I fully expect at least one of the first stamps with King Charles on them to have Camilla on it as well, if not a dedicated "Charles & Camilla" set at some point.
Oh, wait...there already is a Charles & Camilla set, from 2005:

So Canada has retired some old currency, like the $1, $2, $25, $500, $1,000 bills but paper money is still good in other denominations.
The speculation about accelerating the retiring of paper money because of the new King seems like rubbish.
Maybe banks will burn Queen notes faster, but I wouldn't expect a recall of the notes out there.

Fact is, we are a bit like mourners at a funeral, having turned our phones off to pay attention to proceedings. The world will still probably be there and still be screwed up when we surface. Call it dereliction of duty if you wish.

I happened to have the TV on when the initial news of the Queen's illness was announced and it became apparent things were deteriorating. One sensed this was preparing the nation for the worse. Throughout the afternoon there were subtle things, such as presenters began to look back using words such as "the Queen was", until the news outlets formally announced the sad news at about 6.30pm.
Many of the formalities are traditions dating back into history and the TV coverage has been extensive. Today (Sunday) we see aerial views of the Scottish countryside as the hearse is brought from Balmoral to Edniburgh and, in villages and towns, people lining the route.
It all shows how much loved the Queen was by the country.

While it's true that political discussions should go to DT, the reality is, ALL discussions that are not casino / gambling / math / etc related, belong at DT as well. That's why DT was created - to create a space for the other conversations while we keep the focus of WoV where it belongs.
Hell, even the Deadpool thread, which is all about gambling (OK, a rather morbid form of gambling), is at DT.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the Monarchy in Scotland.
Founded as a monastery in 1128 at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, the Palace of Holyroodhouse has a close association with the History of Scotland. Today, the Palace is a close focus for national celebrations and events in Scotland, most notably The Queen's ‘Holyrood Week’, which usually runs from the end of June to the beginning of July every year.

Holyrood Week 2022 has begun with the Ceremony of the Keys at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. During the ceremony, The Queen was symbolically offered the keys to the City of Edinburgh by the Lord Provost on the day of her arrival.
