With some studies showing that as many as one-third of patients with COVID-19 may experience lingering symptoms, the National Institutes of Health announced this week that it is launching an analysis to figure out what is causing the constellation of symptoms.
Long-term effects of COVID-19 given name
Glad to hear you will be resuming your pre-Covid activities! Hopefully, your symptoms will be negligible. Both my parents got their 2nd shots at the beginning of this month. Dad had no symptoms, but Mom had a sore shoulder/arm for a couple of days.Quote: SOOPOOIn an hour I go for second Moderna shot. Will update the forum on how shitty I feel over the next day or two. It’s bad enough that essential businesses were staggering the second shot injections so entire units did not call in sick on the same day. I think I will go to my local casino for the first time a week or so after. And start playing basketball again too! Will I be 100% safe...? Absolutely not! But the benefit of doing what I enjoy will outweigh that newly lowered risk.
I did have a question, though. You said you would be doing things in a week or so. I had heard that it takes 14 days after the second shot for full effectiveness (this came from a family member who is an RN). Do you think the 14 day guideline is an overabundance of caution, or perhaps the guidelines been changed? It seems that prevailing thought on all things Covid is constantly evolving.

A crazy, out of the blue question. Did you visit Bermuda in the summer of 1975?

Good luck to you SOOPOO. Hope any adverse reaction from the second vaccine is mild. One good thing is that reaction, soreness in the arm and muscle, headache, general feeling of not feeling well, is actually a positive thing in that it indicates the vaccine is working and your body responding just as it should.
Quote: billryanIt just took me over an hour to do what is usually a five-ten minute commute. It seems that the local hospital was set to give out 900 doses of the vaccine today and some of the usual suspects are complaining about whatever. Someone supposedly tipped off the cops that an attempt to shut down the site would be made, and the local Sheriff responded with a show of force. He even bought in the Arizona Rangers. After about twenty minutes of sitting, I inched up to the first of three checkpoints where I was asked what I was doing, where I was going, if I had firearms in the car, etc, etc. I must have answered them correctly because I was allowed to proceed to the next checkpoint, a half mile away where I again passed their pop quiz. A half hour later, same questions, same results.
. LOL. I was poor in 1975. I think I had never been more than a tank of gas from NYC. I’ve actually never been to Bermuda.Quote: billryanA crazy, out of the blue question. Did you visit Bermuda in the summer of 1975?
Quote: SOOPOOMy reaction to second MODERNA shot. Got shot at 9am. By the time I went to sleep, around 11:30pm, other than a sore arm at injection site, no symptoms. And the sore arm was not as bad as with first shot. Woke up around 1am shivering frantically. I usually sleep au natural as I tend to be warm due to wife requiring 70 degree thermostat. I put on shorts, T shirt and warm socks and still felt freezing. I was shaking so much I scared my dog. Woke up around once an hour and never fell back into deep sleep. But when I woke up at 7am other than being dog tired I felt ‘normal’. I’ve taken 2 separate 2 hour naps and think my reactions to the shot are over and I just have to sleep tonight to return to normal. To me it can really be classified as an inconvenience, and rightly or wrongly, I now feel immune to COVID-19. In the sense that I’ll ‘do’ anything that society allows. I may go to my local casino next Wednesday.
Congrats on only minor reaction. That is the best case scenario as the reaction confirms vaccine is doing what it supposed to.
I'd be careful with that "I feel immune" idea. Your a medical guy, so I think you know to still be cautious. Unfortunately there are those that really do feel immune, throw caution to the wind and regret it later.
One of the big things is we are learning more and more everyday. And some info contradicts recent thoughts and info.
Just today I learned something new about my own situation. I have been having a few issues, big one is severe fatigue which has re-emerged in the past 8 weeks or so after having gone away for a while after my recovery. I also have been having re-occurring ear infections, an issue I have never had before, which started in August. Not all the time but maybe 6 episodes. Twice went to urgent care, once to my primary doctor and the others waited for it to resolve. I didn't continue to seek medical attention each time, because the 3 times I did, they told me they didn't really see anything but still treated me for inner ear infection.
So I wondered if this could be related to covid, but had never read that as a symptom, or lingering symptom, so I dismissed that idea and just assumed it was something new and fairly minor that I was going through recently.
So this morning I read that reoccurring inner ear infections is indeed a longterm issue for some people that have long term effects after recovering. Autopsies on several people that had passed away and had covid, actually found the virus in the inner ear canal. Since there is that tube that goes from throat to inner ear, it is not really surprising. But just something new I learned today. How to deal with this lingering effect or symptom, I haven't figured out yet. lol Just like I have no idea how to deal with the severe fatigue that has me sleeping 12-14 hours a day right now, between overnight, naps, naps in the recliner. Luckily my longterm issues aren't anything painful, nor I don't think dangerous, just disruptive to life and annoying.
Back in April when I was going through the actual illness, I had this weird symptom, I have never seen mentioned. Funny dream. Not nightmares or anything unpleasant, but dreams of people, places and events from my youth. People and things I haven't thought about in 25 years. Teachers and events from Middle School. People and events from the ice cream shop that I worked at when I was 16 and haven't thought about in forever. Relatives that are now long gone. Friends at the time that I haven't seen in 20 years since we were kids.
So I had that back in April when I was going through the illness and it went away when I recovered. But when this fatigue came back about Christmas time, these funny dreams came back right with it. Weird.
Hi KJ,Quote: kewljOne other issue I will mention even though when I mentioned this to my doctor, he looked at me as if I was nuts. lol

This is nothing to do with Covid, which we all know is a hoax: It is in fact part of the 5G remote control signals being sent to your vaccine modified receptor cells. You are supposed to be directed (How to vote, etc) by those radio signals, but until you are fully programmed and tuned, you will pick up random IPTV cross channel interference. Soon, you will start getting quite clear and authoritative voice commands, direct from Microsoft/Huawai, depending how close you are to the 5G mast.

ps. The inner ear infections may be a result of the rewiring of your cochlea to the audio command channel of your vaccine chip.

Stay safe, folks.
Good luck with the vaccine and minimal side effects DJTeddyBear.
And I appreciate the heroic altruism of all who get the vaccine.Quote: kewljI appreciate the humor, OnceDear.

Yes, it very possibly has the downside of some side-effects, which they may have avoided by not vaccinating, but that's what heroes do: TOFTT.
Waiting patiently for mine, hopefully in the next two weeks. And of course it's NOT a substitute for masks and social distancing, which are doing a great job, already.

Then what is the point?
When Chris Cuomo had Covid, he talked about his lucid dreaming and mentioned dreams & waking delusions that remind me very much of what you are saying. Apparently this is a well-known symptom:Quote: kewljOne other issue I will mention even though when I mentioned this to my doctor, he looked at me as if I was nuts. lol

Yes thank you teliot. I haven't read the article you linked to get, but I will shortly.
I remember Chris Cuomo talking about dreaming about his late father sitting at the foot of his bed. But that is when he was actively fighting the virus and running a high fever, which can lead to or play a part in delusions.
I am 10 months removed from that active virus situation, I think. I just have these weird lingering things. I don't know. I guess no one really knows.
Quote: mcallister3200Are we sure his waking delusions had anything to do with COVID? Seems common for him...
If you are making a political statement about NY governor Cuomo you are talking about the wrong Cuomo.

I’m aware it’s the tv dude, and I am making no political statement in any case. A bit of a stretch. Just a dumb joke.
Quote: SOOPOOMostly answering kewlj, who advised me to be safe, even after getting the vaccine. This Sunday I will be playing basketball for the first time in almost a year. Is it as safe as sitting in my house typing inane comments on WoV? Of course not! I am a risk/benefit guy. I get a ton of benefit from playing basketball. It makes me feel great that I can still play with the young adults at my advanced age. I disagree with AZ on a lot... but not on the overwhelming need to resume your normal life. If you think about it, my non COVID risks playing basketball far exceed my COVID risk. I’m on the planet to enjoy. I plan on doing so. Risk free? Nope....
Sorry SOOPOO, I missed this response earlier. I too am a risk/reward guy and weight many decision, long before covid by that. Not all, but many.
I think playing basketball is great. Is it outdoors or indoors? You probably could have been safely doing that all along, especially if it is outdoors. I still get out and do many activates outdoors and some indoors. Just so happens the casino environment is one I feel a little riskier, especially sitting at a blackjack table, and unfortunately, that is how I make my living.
I have no problem going out and doing things. You know what the riskiest part of me going out is? The first 2 minutes, getting on the elevator and getting down to the lobby. I don't like being on the elevator right now. Going home, going up is not so bad because I can wait until no one else is going up and then just jump on. But coming down in the morning, it could stop at other floors to pick up people. About half the time I take the steps. lol
. You are trolling me! Asking a guy from Buffalo if his February basketball is indoors or outdoors! It’s indoors. I haven’t played yet. It’s at a private for rent gym. I am not aware if we will have to wear masks. I do know we will have the stupid temperature test at the door.Quote: kewljSorry SOOPOO, I missed this response earlier. Serious question.... you have identified (in your mind!) what is the riskiest part of your day, yet you don’t just walk down the stairs? Is it perhaps you are not as afraid of getting reinfected as you say?
I am extremely healthy- proper diet, daily exercise, good sleep, stress management. No chronic health conditions at all. No prescription drugs. No over-the-counter meds either. Haven't had as much as a common cold for at least 20 years. COVID wouldn't stand a chance against my immune system. Why should I bother with a vaccine?
I never stopped living my life either. I pretty much live the same lifestyle as I did pre-COVID. Everywhere I go, I go maskless, except for a dozen or so flights, and one trip to Costco (they made me do it).
I look forward to a week in Vegas after they end the stupid mask requirement. Stay well.

Welcome to the forum. I could not live the same lifestyle I did pre COVID simply due to government imposed restrictions. No gyms. No restaurants. No indoor basketball. No casinos. No massages . No..... all at some point or another during the pandemic.
One other issue is the difference of opinion amongst friends about what to do. We only have one couple that we usually go out with that feels safe with indoor dining out. So a few other couples are out of our ‘usual rotation’. Even if I couldn’t care less about COVID-19, there is no way I could live the same lifestyle I did before COVID-19.

Then we joined a rogue gym that stayed open in defiance of regulations, until our regular high end gyms re-opened (I maintain multiple permanent gym memberships actually, both high end and chain).
When our regular gyms re-opened, we quit the temporary rogue gym, but then after a month or so our state went back on lockdown and our regular gyms closed again.
We then joined yet another gym that was initially staying open illegally, but then later moved entirely outdoors - outdoor gyms are currently legal in our state.
And now, at least one of my regular gyms, a very high end one, is staying open so back to that, and dumped all the temporary memberships. Technically, this gym is staying open in defiance of regulations, but it is very uncrowded, sometimes barely fifteen people in the whole gym and it is quite huge, two stories. I actually feel safer in this high end gym which is very uncrowded versus the temporary outdoor gym we joined, which may be outdoors, but is more crowded.
Meantime, I converted a room and large gazebo outdoors to be a covered gym with treadmill, lifecycle, and some strength conditioning equipment. We keep everything that is outdoors covered with these custom waterproof covers. That's enough for her - she's happy and doesn't even go to the gym anymore just works out at home.
In short, really the main things we missed during the pandemic are the gym and travel. And we still managed that one long trip to Vegas and another week and a half long one to a non-gaming vacation spot that ends soon.
As far as dining - take-out is fine. Not appreciably missing the indoor dining experience.
Give me a gym and I could live in an underground bunker for years....

Must not have any family or friends, or even people you like too much to kill. So it’s the perfect carefree lifestyle.

Lost a buddy to pickup basketball game at 49 years of age. Regular group of guys playing in a local school gym. Lots of people playing with CPR knowledge when he went down. Happened literally 300 ft from a fire station and less than a mile from the hospital. No defibrillator available onsite. Heart attack claimed his life.
As tragic as that was another event directly related to his fatal medical emergency that night made things even worse.

I’ve never seen a death on the courts but have seen a bunch of serious injuries. One acquaintance had fractured skull and has never been the same since. I think me stepping on the court may be overdoing it!

I have always wanted to do CPR on someone and the Heimlich. My sister had the opportunity to do CPR on someone at a K-Mart, sadly he didn't make it..

One of the doctors who is on CNN, said he was going to out to dinner with his wife for the first time with another couple. And they all had been vaccinated.
I think that means you’ve met the most stringent standards possible.
She has now received both of her vaccinations (two shot vaccine). No real side effects either - maybe a tad more than I.
I remain in the study, and they opted me into a sub-study where they will pull my medical records for the past ten years, and continue to monitor me for the next ten to determine if there is any difference in my health over the years post-vaccination. Interesting. They continue to pay me (a pittance, but something) throughout. How's that for an AP move - get a vaccine that I wanted to get anyway, and get paid for it, monthly, over a decade, plus free health monitoring? The check ins other than the first few are all online via app. I assume there will be another blood draw for the study but that may be the last one before it goes all virtual.
Both fully vaccinated now and ready for another Vegas trip. Will continue to wear masks and be vigilant.
Quote: MDawgBoth fully vaccinated now and ready for another Vegas trip. Will continue to wear masks and be vigilant.
Fully vaccinated and will continue to wear masks?
While I am humbled at this loving gesture, I also have tremendous guilt that my situation (higher risk) is effecting others.
So I hope to get vaccinated SOON, and yes I will continue to wear a mask in the casino environment for as long as they allow it.
For the record, evidence that mask wearing reduces spread of germs and virus is the low rate of regular flu this season. With that in mind, just think where we would be with deaths if there was no mask wearing? Also just think where we would be had there been 100% compliance, especially in the early days of this "cone shaped" spread.
Quote: ChumpChangeDespite the near zero flu deaths, we're still at over half a million COVID deaths.
Yes, so just imagine where we would be without mask wearing partial compliance.
