Smoke smell in rental car

i rented a car. I am dizzy from the smoke smell even with ac off and windows open. I open the cabin air filter. Replaced with new one. I have the ac running. Feel much better.

The filter was so dirty, seems like it would be smelly no matter what. This is one of the grossest things I've ever seen on the internet.

Next time,don't accept it. I'd have returned it and asked for an upgrade for my troubles. I can't imagine there is a huge demand for rentals just now.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

At the minimum you should ask to be refunded the amount of the air filter. It should not be your responsibility to buy a new air filter for a rental.

But if the car was from Hertz the reimbursement might bankrupt them.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

I once had a car, that after I got to the exit gate, realized it smelled of smoke. I only needed it for one day, so didn't want the hassle of turning around and getting another car, moving baggage etc.
But I asked at the gate as they checked me out to make a note on my record that I reported it of smelling of smoke so that they couldn't come back and charge me for cleaning it.
