That doesn't seem accurate to me, but I don't go up there much. The primary marketing was to retired middle-class workers in the Northeast. It's mostly White Christian from that area in my experience.

The Villages was extensively marketed to Catholics in the tri-state neighborhood as an alternative to Miami and places that other folks retire to. They also heavily marketed the NYPD, even waiving age requirements for retired cops.
That said, many of the Village's residents come from the Northeast. Obviously, they are well off or they couldn't afford to live there. I will say this. To enjoy the Village's lifestyle, you must be someone who likes to socialize. Some people don't, they buy and move out. As for my wife and I, we don't like crowds and we enjoy diversity. If you stay in the Villages all the time, all you will see are old retired white folks. For some, that's what they want.
There are a number of small towns in our area of Central Florida. We live in one of them. It's a nice place to live. The taxes are low. The winters are mild. Not much crime. I know my barber's name and he knows mine. It's a different Florida than on the coasts.
By "miss" I mean, no landfall, just wind, rain and high tides, etc.

That's hardly the Villages. That goes from Orlando to Deland to Ocala to Inverness, an area that's more than 70 Miles long and about half that wide.
If you search just for The Villages, there are 2 Synagogues, and 28 churches on the map near where the Villages actually is located.

I'm not endorsing, in any way, sex offenders. But lumping guys who, at 17, had sex with a 15 year old (my friends' son) with guys who at 58 messed with a 12 year old (my deceased neighbor), or others of every variety in that registry, is a disservice not just to the guys, but to the community.

Yeah, I see your point.... I should of phrased that better. What struck me is that they seemed to be saying "hey don't sweat the 34 we've got. Th rest of the state is much worse".
On a different note, I grew up down the road from you in Rochester. I remember a conversation with my dad in the early 80s. He was mussing about retiring and said maybe he and my mom would move south. I knew that a number of their friends had retired recently and moved to various states, mainly Florida, Texas, and Arizona, so I asked him which southern locale he had in mind. "Canandaigua" he said. In the end, even that was farther than he cared to go so he stayed where he was till the day he died.

Old people sure seem to like hot and boring. I mean, why not just get intentionally caught robbing a bank when you are 20? You can retire then and get sent to sit around in the desert playing cards and having someone tell you what you are allowed to do. The worst thing about getting old would be becoming super fearful. It's something I've noticed even more acutely playing cards, of all things. Older players are often extremely fearful and they love, for example, checking pots down when it is 2 ways so that neither player loses much. (Should be noted, gamblers in general seem like very fearful people).
It seems like getting old should logically have the opposite effect, especially if you get to be retired. You've escaped death almost as long as possible. Your big career and romantic moments and so forth are basically over, for better or worse. What is there to fear?
Hopefully, I'll be like my mom. She's 73. She's going to be bouncing around SE Asia in a couple of months, after she goes to Sicily. She's not especially well off, as a retired teacher. Just makes it happen. She jokes about death a lot.

You might consider Palm Springs. There are several casinos there and numerous golf courses. Vegas is only four hours away.

This played out in the late sixties with municipalities all over the country trying to buy payrolls. Build your factory/warehouse/whatever here and we will give tax moratoriums, rezoning, etc. Fort Collins, Colorado said ' no way! Growth has costs such as roads, schools, fire, police, parks. We focus on quality of life and new businesses must pay their own way for parks, schools, roads, courthouses, etc. No tax breaks for moving here, no traffic jams.
The Villages charges miniscule impact fees and forces surrounding areas to shoulder a burden without a tax base to support the 'growth'.
Trip there is next month. As I've said a few times, Naples is a big favorite over the villages. Mike, wife does not want to move to a desert.
Getting used to retirement. Either golf or gym every day. Still in process of finalizing health insurance, pension, 401k transfer, 403b transfer, etc.... I have a 'to do' list which includes evaluating cable bill, cell phone bill, credit card options (I plan to be a credit card AP!).
But to do list has to wait. 3 day golf trip to Peak n Peek.

Id be doing a life sentence then. We are in Naples now. Spent all day yesterday with a real estate agent. He showed us all option types. Condo. Single family detached. Upper unit. Lower unit. Big building on golf course, etc... Naples is a crazy wealthy area. The number of million dollar houses is RIDICULOUS. There was no area we went to that wasn’t beautiful. Didn’t see a piece of garbage on any street. I am pretty sure when the time comes I’ll be able to find something acceptable in my price range. Recently retired so not really sure what my price range is!
We go up to the Villages tomorrow for 5 days. I will be stunned if wife finds Villages acceptable after seeing Naples.

I like Naples too, but my preference would probably be Sarasota. I have family about 40 miles north of Naples in Cape Coral.

You waited a bit too long to get the full impact of The Villages. It will be cooler weather this week. May through September, it's nearly unbearable inland (there).

Cape Coral has lost a few roofs to mini-tornadoes recently and some owners are learning the hard way that sea walls have to be maintained by abutting owner, not the city.
Sarasota was nice area. Lots of great restaurants. Forty minute "rush hours".

My parents lost their seawall about two year ago in the last hurricane. I was shocked at the cost to rebuild it.

We will be ‘snowbirds’ Buffalo May-October. Florida November through April.
We went for a drive. Saw an ‘open house’ sign on main road. Followed the labyrinthine drive to the open house. Attractive 3 bedroom with a nice lanai enclosed pool. A drive to the clubhouse or private beach. It was only $1.7 million!!! There were hundreds of similar houses between this house and the main road. And this was just one of a hundred like developments. There was no view other than your neighbors nice house. The realtor said ‘if you are looking to spend less than 2million this is a very attractive home’.

House is in Northwest corner of the Villages. I was leary of the location but it ended up being great. Not too far from two of the three main ‘Squares’. And REALLY nice golf courses 10 minutes or less away by golf cart. The house has a private heated pool. I kept it at 91 throughout. I didn’t realize how ‘weird’ I was to like it that warm, but I like it that warm, and wifey loves it that warm. I need ‘pet friendly’ so that eliminates about 3/4 of the houses for rent. Comes with golf cart, two bicycles, and fully stocked with everything you could think of. There were even a few bottles of liquor, a cup filled with loose change, a bowl filled with chocolates, and loads of all the ‘disposables’ you’d want. Tide pods, garbage bags, liquid soap, Keurig pods, toilet paper, etc….
Wifey liked it so much we are renting it again November/December. Saving around $1k by renting directly through rental company instead of AirBnB /VRBO. More posts to follow.

She has spoken with a bunch of her patients who happen to live in The Villages, and all have given it glowing reports. It is just north of Orlando, so it does not have as warm a winter climate as Naples.
So we are going there for a 5 day vacation. For just $99 a night you get a two bedroom villa, a golf cart, two bicycles, unlimited free golf, entertainment, pools, tennis, etc....
They obviously are going to try and sell us a place. I am interested in what's available, cost, etc.....
We are also going to go to Naples for 4 days, and have a real estate agent take us around.
Anyone have any experience or knowledge of The Villages or Naples?
I still feel young, but I am not foolish enough to believe that that will change. Is it a negative that ALL the community members are 55+? (spouses can be younger, as mine...)

I heard if you are a single guy you can do well there. Women bring you a casserole (sp?) dish and when you return it things happen. That is how she shows her interest. If they want to impress me make a cake of some sort.
Doubt I would go there, though. Sounds like an HOA on steroids.

Between you and Bob there are some just bizarre thoughts here. Bob I guess doesn’t like being able to leave his house more than a day or two here and there. And he can get his candles delivered.
DRich, I would like to be in Florida for 1. Weather. 2. Golf. 3. Pool. 4. Other outdoor activities. Please explain to me why I need to be by an ocean? Oh, I forget…. You enjoy watching other people suffer the devastation from the ‘surge’ during the Cat 5 hurricane. By the way, DRich, there are lakes up here you can live on. Do you think lakes are made of water?

I;ve grown up and lived by the ocean all my life-swimming and sailing. If I ever move to FLA, I'd want to be able to do those two activities at my leisure. So I can agree with Rich. But, if your liesurely pursuits don't habitually include those, or other activites involving the ocean, I can also agree that proximity isn't that important. To each his own, and enjoy your retirement!

Water is very overrated. I lived in Santa Barbara for years and you get used to the ocean really really fast. Water is very boring to me. I don't get what's so enticing about a big flat shiny surface. Mostly all you can do is look at it so why not just get a big picture and hang it on the wall. What's the difference.
