I love NYC. I am a New Yorker. Born and raised in Queens, NY. NY is not bankrupt or destitute because of the large tax haul from the multiple businesses that call it home, and the city income tax which is lopped on top of Federal and State taxes for the half of the population which is subsidizing the other half. Doesn't change the fact that there are multiple millions of NYC residents on the dole.
Edit... I found that NY State has over SIX MILLION people on Medicaid/CHIP. (CHIP is Medicaid for children). That's an astonishing number! I couldn't find the distribution between NYC and the rest of the state. But NYS is clearly a welfare state, with the 'haves' supporting a giant class of 'have nots'. You really think that NY is a Dem state because of Trump's inanities?

What is your explanation for a state like Mississippi? Full of people who are "living off the dole," and yet it's as red a state as can be.

they have a large tax haul from multiple businesses because these business are tremendously successful and have tremendous earinings partly from the prestige of operating a business in NYC.
if you are saying that the tax haul from these business is unfair to them, that would be a ridiculous statement; as business growth and development in NYC is staggering and the vast majority of these successful businesses and developers have absolutely no intention of moving out.

Not saying it is unfair, just that it is a fact that they subsidize millions of New Yorkers who do not contribute and do take services. And my point is not about how much who should be paying, just that with the GIGANTIC Welfare class NY will always be a Dem state. City slums are ALWAYS filled with Democrats. Rural slums (Mississippi was mentioned) can be filled with Repubs.

NY is a high price city resulting in many people WORKING FULL TIME and still unable to cover costs
Hence many qualify for medicaid and food stamps
I know someone making $20 full time at the library. She takes home about $1100 every 2 weeks after taxes. Her rent is $2500 a month for a 2 bedroom apt (she has small children) and thats in a poorer section of brooklyn
Before you suggest she gets a smaller apt child protective services and landlords are very strict in ny. You cant have children and adults all squished into one room
She gets medicaid rental assistance and food stamps
The dole is not necessarily for lazy people when it comes to NYC
EDIT: suggesting poor people dont have children is not the answer either

I dunno about the cold war being over. Putin would love to seize Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and soon enough nibble away at the oil rich countries. He just loves to keep the West on it's back foot, with intractible squabbles like the Ukraine from stopping the spread of 'Western Values' towards his borders. trumpy already gave him Syria and Crimea ( with the world's help ). By showing weakness and fighting his own allies, trumpy is surrendering the world to Putin and Xi and others.
Nato is a big waste of money in as much all military spending is, but while China and Russia and multiple other countries decide to stay tooled up, the West has to be tooled up too, and that is more than just equipment. It's manpower and attitude.
US soldiers stationed in the US would lose local knowledge of what may one day be the battlefield. They wouldn't be much use stationed back home, either, would they? So, what's to do, bring them home and put them out of work?

What part of Russia took over Crimea less than 4 years ago and made war with Ukraine is hard to believe? Airliners getting shot down over European airspace could easily be American. Englishmen being poisoned by Russians. All kinds of aggression among the Balkan states. And American financial interests, alliances, and huge European corporations with American divisions representing millions of American jobs.
Nestlé is Swiss.Budweiser was sold to a European country.
All the European car divisions have American plants.
All American carmakers have huge European sales and divisions.
Siemens, Bayer, Merck, Serco, a hundred others are intertwined here. This site (below) lists them by division.
http://www.jobline.net/euusa1.htm
Logistically, Europe is entirely too physically close by country to be comfortable with their boundaries being respected without protection . NATO is like-minded countries against aggression, communism, and for mutual benefit as trading partners and defending their people. Those include millions of Americans over there working.
We can't live in isolation. Too much of our economic growth depends on international companies and trade. NATO is part of the price for dominating the world economy.
Trying to keep my reply short. So I'll stop there, but lots more could be said.

Anyways my question for you was when discussing the race they seemed more concerned with the Governor race and even local Senate races with candidates wanting to discuss local issues with me. Obviously I’m not a voting resident here, but I found it interesting on a national level that they were more concerned about the Governor race than the Senate. Is there pressing issues that will affect average Floridians with a liberal governor? Taxes are low, supported by tourists so why would anyone mess it up? And yes, I’m too lazy to do the research on details.
So my question is for Babs and anyone else, regardless of party.
So who makes a larger difference in your life, national issues or state issues? At my point in life, national issues mean more to me financially and I obviously want a GOP Senate for my future and for my fellow hard working Americans. And of course to help my President move his agenda forward.

If I had to name the top 5 issues in the state, in no particular order :
The Everglades are dying. That means the entire lower half of the state, from Palm Beach down, will soon be without drinking water. Instead of getting them healthy again they're looking at putting yet another road through them, kI'll in them faster. A different proposal would raise the road that's there so the water can flow freely underneath a huge bridge.
Hurricanes are getting stronger and more in number. The state is decently prepared, but still hasn't recovered from Irma, and here we go again.
Marijuana (medical)passed in 2016. The state legislature in response made it a bigger felony than it already was. In response to that, the MJ lobby is now going to force recreational down their throats.
Gambling is a big 3 way fight. The indians, the corporations, and the no-gamblers keep undercutting each other. Cuba being legalized by Obama, then illegal by Trump, affects a lot of things, but especially gambling futures.
Choice and anti - abortion sides continue to fight. Murders seem to be up. Probably some controversy I'm forgetting.
My life is affected more by federal than state activity, has been for a while. However, many things the stare/county/city do ARE affecting me.
I think the local GOP is trusting national money to push Rick Scott along. The PACS are spending tons on him. So the locals can worry more about the govs race (and state legislature). The GOP has no talent on that side, and the Dems have 2, maybe 3, solid candidates. Legislature is heavily Repub and has been for a while but they're running scared this year. Thanks for the responses. The Everglades issues is such a concern to me as well. The tragedy that has happened with the pythons is one of the saddest and most undercovered drama stories out there. It seems hundreds of species are gone from the area including Raccoons and many rare birds. And they are now moving in to the upper keys as well.
I’ve read some good stories and some of the efforts being used including bringing experts over from Asia to help find mating areas and such.
On the Hurricanes, I’m not sure I agree they are getting worse if you look at the last 100 years, but the cost of damage repair and insurance is crazy. Again no easy solution.
Side note, I purchased my first Florida car insurance today as I bought a vehicle for down here now and had to get a separate policy. Even with a perfect record, the rates are over twice as high as I pay in PA. But one day driving down here and it’s obvious why. The amount of wrecks in the greater Tampa area daily is crazy.
State should move forward on Weed and tax it like CO and Nevada do. I for one love Florida having no state income tax. Why not make those who choose to use pay, and maybe even a higher tax rate for Out of Staters. Already being done with hotel and car rental taxes, what choice do tourists have? They will pay to play.
Abortion, should not be an issue but sadly it still is. To be the law of the land is R vs W but yes I know many on the right want to reverse it with no plan to pay for the unwanted children. In my mind you can’t be for less government and continuing growth of the welfare state without understanding someone will have to pay for the additional births. It’s a reality that some don’t want to admit.
Gambling, sorry but F the Indians. Again no reason why Florida shouldn’t expand gambling and use its location and amenities to become a destination. Maybe it’s too late but it’s still a potential money maker that could be used to grow budget dollars.
All of that said, I still feel most Floridians would be better with a GOP led Senate, which Rick Scott is part of.
It will be interesting to watch and I wish I was a resident to vote here. PA is a lost cause and we are stuck with 6 more years of Casey unless something crazy happens in the next 4 months.

I don't begrudge the Seminoles (or any other tribe) for being able to get their gambling privileges, just the ridiculous situation that has been created where the community basically just sends the profit making venture just to the Native Americas, while they run horse dog, and bingo gambling and cut their throats on other gambling income.
On the other hand I would oppose any pro-gambling laws which effectively shut out small players (somewhat like Dollys situation), just letting in the big players. I'm afraid we'll go that route instead on the pretense that that is the only way gambling can be done.
Quote: billryanWhich legal scholars might that be?

It also means that, now, if he agrees to an interview under those conditions then there is evidence that he committed a crime.
If he agrees that there is evidence that he committed a crime, then he is basically admitting that he committed a crime.
So, his lawyers have basically boxed him in to virtually admitting to a crime by agreeing to be interviewed.
Quote: Dalex64If he agrees that there is evidence that he committed a crime, then he is basically admitting that he committed a crime.
Another lawyer said that if Trump's lawyers
thought there was even a chance Mueller

lawyers would have never put this deal out
there. Like lawyers say, never ask a question

put yourself in a position to be surprised.
They want to question Trump because they
DON'T have evidence, they want to create
a perjury crime with the questioning.
