Beginning in 2009, they (the NFL) have been getting paid some amount in the millions (sorry, I don't have specifics) to have the teams come out and stand during the National Anthem. It's supposed to be a recruitment tactic for military service. I'm not sure who actually gets the money: the organization, the owners, players...some combination.

I think they stopped that last season, or the year before. The Organizations got the money, which means the Owners got it. It wasn't all the teams either. The Giants supposedly only found out the Jets were getting it when they were co-financing the new stadium, if the reports were accurate. It was more than just standing during the Anthem. It involved Military Color Guards, honoring vets, flyovers, halftime shows and a few other things.

While I'm not surprised, that should be disturbing to everyone on so many levels. Basically, the government is attempting to manipulate its citizens to join the military by making some citizens' role models stand during the national anthem. Doesn't anyone else feel like that's just mass deception and trickery, and yet they're spending large quantities of money on it? I feel like this happens with tons and tons of things. Personally, I feel like nationalism is evil. How many wars have happened because of nationalism? You can be proud of where you're from, but america seems to take it to another level. Not only are we proud, but the nationalism that's pushed on us to repeat is that we're "better" than you too. It happens at the national level, the state level, and even the city level. People get in fights over high school teams that are "rivals." What good has ever come out of nationalism and being all 'MERICA? If your thoughts are "we're the best!" okay... what comes after that other than just basically being a dick to others?

Trump is the epitome of "winning..." and "being better" than anyone else... NOT THAT HE DOES THIS - JUST THAT IT IS CLEARLY HIS PERSONA. I don't know whether it's worth the money they spend, but I assume they have to replace people yearly through retirement or death.

They could just go with a "help wanted" sign. But if they don't get the positions filled they're allowed to advertise (I assume)

I think Nationalism should be a split-off topic in itself. Care to copy your post into a new thread? The split mechanism doesn't work well with large threads like this one.

As you say, it's complicated. And I think that a huge amount of our national malaise can be traced back to that mindset in one form or another. It's the root of isolationism, Nazi sympathies, discrimination, judgemental attitudes, discontent with a person's lot in life, and even many mass murders. (Mindset of murderers vs. "others")

It's also inspiring and motivating, driving people to accomplishments both individually and as a group they otherwise would fall short on. It helps bring people into service where they can be killed, or otherwise serve the greater good at considerable cost to themselves. Sports exhibit that thinking all the time: Olympics, World Cup, etc.

It also inspires great generosity, like recent examples of the hurricanes. The outpouring of help on Harvey and Irma has been awe-inspiring. But the best contrast is Maria, where PR was initially regarded as "other" until the point was forcefully made that they are Americans; the aid and concern increased exponentially once the ignorance was addressed.

But for Nationalism to exist, it needs to exclude. Other countries, other groups, other people, where "other" gets perverted into "lesser", "inferior", "wrong", whether attitude, value system, or attribute. It's closely related to organized religions that way; be saved with us, or be damned for eternity. Christian is one group. Baptist is a subset. Evangelical Baptist, smaller subset yet.

The exclusion, and how the thinking is formed around it, is where we're going off the rails. America was FOUNDED as an immigrant country, so everyone except Native Americans was once "other". This basic inclusiveness is in direct opposition to exclusion. The concept of encouraging diverse immigrants is to value different traditions, experiences, and skill sets as a part of the whole. Exclusion ranks "different" as inferior. So we are seeing many symptoms of that conflict, grown over generations.

Just a start on the subject, but enough for now.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

I agree this could be its own topic, even as it regards trump or not. I would love to discuss this further, but am a bit more swamped than normal right now and just don't have the time/energy to put in to a proper discussion. The only thing I'll add is if you need nationalism to do the right thing (via Portugal and "they are americans" leading to more help) then that's sad. Giving aid to someone in need shouldn't need a precursor, if you are indeed trying to do the right thing. We should look past labels such as american, mexican, black, white, etc, etc, and just help one another in general... As it relates to trump/this thread... this is most obvious that he's the exact opposite of this way with his "america first" and "I'm gonna make america WIN" thinking. It's both sad, and pathetic.

Plus, I have another idea entirely that would make for a much more interesting thread, in my opinion. Been thinking about writing it up... when I have the time.

I guess it's sad in the sense where you'd help someone because they're American but not otherwise. I don't know how much USA helps other countries but it seems like we're doing a good amount when it comes to disasters in other countries (I won't throw in the joke I was thinking about HRC and you know where).

But in the other sense, the competition arises and makes people better. I don't know all the details on the whole space exploration, moon landing, USA, and Russia stuff, but to me it seems like the competition between both countries made both better and work harder to excel at space stuffs. It's similar to capitalism and the free market in that competition between two companies causes them to have better products.

I don't think professional sports would have such a big following if everyone was like "Yeah, all the NFL teams are equal in my eyes, I just watch it for the entertainment, I don't care who wins." The players don't just want to win so they can be considered the best, but to bring pride to their city....just like an Olympian wants to win so he can be the best but also because he has pride in his country.

If any liberals need a pick-me-up today, this should do it:

“I Hate Everyone in the White House!”: Trump Seethes as Advisers Fear the President Is “Unraveling”

Quote:

Several months ago, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversation, former chief strategist Steve Bannon told Trump that the risk to his presidency wasn’t impeachment, but the 25th Amendment—the provision by which a majority of the Cabinet can vote to remove the president. When Bannon mentioned the 25th Amendment, Trump said, “What’s that?” According to a source, Bannon has told people he thinks Trump has only a 30 percent chance of making it the full term

Not to nitpick, but that title is way off. They are referring to American Special Operations members being deployed, not American Special Forces. Only the Army unit commonly referred to as Green Berets are Special Forces. All other units- Navy Seals, Marine Recon, Delta Force, ect, ect, are Specials Ops, not Special Forces. All Army Special Forces members are Special Ops. Not all Special Ops member are Special Forces. In fact, the vast majority aren't.

Holy Shite.
Now Trump has General Kelly lying for him. WTF?

"And a congresswoman stood up, and in a long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise, stood up there in all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building, and how she took care of her constituents because she got the money, and she just called up President Obama, and on that phone call, he gave the money, the $20 million, to build the building, and she sat down. And we were stunned, stunned that she’d done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned."
Kelly, either intentionally or not, fabricated what happened. His story is simply not true, as video from the event later showed. Wilson did not brag about getting money for the building (because she wasn’t in Congress when the funds were allocated), and she didn’t make the event all about herself.
The only reason Kelly’s lies were exposed was because journalists did their job and looked at the veracity of what a powerful person said. That’s what a free press does.

I am sure Trump insisted on Kelly attacking the congresswoman
Just really sad that we have a White House that lies then doubles down on a lie because Trump is such a sicko he cant admit any mistakes. In the age of video proof everywhere, just shocking that the WH lies and a videos prove the lies.
He is so deluded he gives himself a 10 out 10 rating for Puerto Rico

Gen. Kelly was put in place to keep a handle on the donald. Now he is telling bald faced lies, attacking Congresswoman while actually confirming she told the truth when Donnie told the grieving widow her husband knew what he was getting into when he joined.
Imagine telling the widow of a guy who died from cancer that he knew what he was doing when he decided to smoke?

Yeah, but at least you've got a Pai Gow Tile game there! The Hard Rock in my town is just another terrible Indian casino. Diceless craps? Ante Blackjack? Some kind of Roulette monstrosity that doesn't even use a wheel? I might as well play at the joke casino from Vegas Vacation. Why are Indian casinos so terrible?!? Help us! Signed, Oklahoma.

Trump Now going after the Widow
Wow

Trump
“I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation"

Myeshia Johnson

“The president said that he knew what he signed up for but it hurts anyways and I was — it made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it. He couldn't remember my husband's name. The only way he remembered my husband's name was because he told me he had my husband’s report in front of him and that's when he actually said ‘La David,’”
“I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name and that’s what hurt me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risks his life for our country, why can't you remember his name? And that’s what made me upset and cry even more because my husband was an awesome soldier.”
“Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated. What she said was 100 percent correct, The phone was on speakerphone. Why would we fabricate something like that?”

Hmm. Who to believe. I believe the widow

Wow. I saw the widow's interview this morning on GMA and I said to myself "I wonder if Donald will be dumb enough to pick a fight with her."

Guess he was...

Yup
Just checked Twitter]

"Bob Corker, who helped President O give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn't get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts...."

I see these Trump tweets and the 1st thing I think is
What a trolling a**hole of a President we have

Everyday, he gets up, reads the news, gets upset, sends off nasty tweets
sad
Its just a forum. Nothing here to get obsessed about.

And he still hasn't figured out that he needs Corker's votes because he has the slimmest of margins in the senate. I'm happy to have him piss the senators off. It guarantees that he accomplishes very little. Minimizes the damages.

The problem is that Corker is still a Republican. He'll toe the line and vote for whatever awful bills the GOP wants to pass.

Yeah- because he's retiring, he's free to point out what a dumbass the President is..... but he's still gonna vote for his awful agenda.

The interview with by CNN reporter with Corker about Trump was a gem. Even though most Republicans are still acting like the 3 monkeys, it's nice to see a confirmation they know a messed up situation when they see it.
There's no secret. Just know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.

Jeff Flake of AZ announces he will not run for reelection next year.

That is one seat Dems have been optimistic about. Probably even more so now.

Trump's an embarrassing disgrace and anybody who supported or is still supporting this POS ought to be ashamed of themselves. They've put an entirey new meaning to the idea of party before country.

A $300m contract to help fix Puerto Rico’s crippled electricity network has been awarded to a tiny Montana firm located in the hometown of a cabinet member of the Trump administration.
Whitefish Energy had only two full-time employees on the day Hurricane Maria struck the island, devastating homes, roads and leaving around 95 per cent of the island without electricity, a figure than has now dropped to 76 per cent.....
The company, located in Whitefish, the home of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, is reportedly financed by a private-equity headed by Joe Colonnetta. Mr Colonnetta was a major donor to the campaign to elect Donald Trump and his wife also donated to Republican election efforts.

Nothing to see here.....

I believe Ryan Zinke’s son is one of the two employees, or at least involved in some way.

The swamp just got 10ft higher.

If you typed the word "dossier" in this thread, and/or said it in conversation, and used the word to disparage YOUR President, feel free to use this forum to admit your ignorance, your stupidity, your blind faith in known criminals, or any other dumbness you now feel for being dumb.

A little over seven more years kids, get used to it, as he might be the first man since Roosevelt to serve a third term!!!

As serving a third term would be a violation of OUR Constitution, it's funny that you think he might serve one. Is it ignorance or an admission that trump doesn't give a fig about it?
