Isn't there a also a fifth rule of left to right?

I.E. Does 10 - 2 + 4 equal 12 or 4 ?

I assume 12, but shouldn't there be a rule that says so?

Yes, you must do these left to right. Some people think that addition occurs before subtraction because of their order in PEMDAS.

Technically, you can add the numbers in any order you wish, but people will misplace the negative. You can calculate -2+4 first and then add that to 10, which will give the correct answer of 12.
