I live in FL, the land of plentiful nice courses and cheap courses
I'm playing tomorrow at the USF Claw golf course
Just got a new grip on my Driver, excited to try it out
Do you play?
Bet?
What do you shoot
maybe an admin can fix that :-)
I have two different groups of friends that I play with. I head up one group, and we never bet. I just tag along with the other group, and they bet on everything (bunch of hospitality folks). Individuals, teams, stroke play, match play, chip offs, putting game... all at the same time. I just ask them to add it all up and tell me what I owe in the clubhouse.
But I haven't golfed since. I don't see me (myself?) getting back into it, at least not anytime soon.
First time I ever went, third hole, banged one right down the pipe, settling at 285yds out. Nailed it to a mix of "oohs" and raucous laughing, because I stroked the club like I swung a bat. Elbows bent, knee cocked, really drove into the sucker like a fastball low and away. Felt good, felt natural. But "You can't swing like that! This is golf!". So I "fixed" my swing and ain't never had a good drive since.
My approach is decent and my putting is straight up surgical. I'll hit at least one 40 footer every time I go out, and even have a 60' under my belt. That's good enough for me. Well, that and a course that allows no shirts and bring-your-own-cooler.
I always gamble, and always drink.
Quote: FaceOnly shot in the 90s maybe 3 times. I just cannot drive to save my life. Like, I use a driver on long par 3's, and that's not a joke. 165yds? Gimme the big dog because that's right in my wheelhouse.
My golf game was much like Tiger Woods, but only the part where it went all to Hell eventually the longer I played.
It was never not fun though. We didn't walk though, just rented carts and usually had beer on hand.
I don't think it was at that property, but I have some vague memories of playing tennis, a soda can with mostly scotch and a cigarette in one hand and the tennis paddle in the other.
Its fun and in the summer, real cheap. Courses down here in the summer practically begging you to come out with cheap prices.
Usually just 20 bucks for a cart and 18.
I really like playing.
It just nice being outdoors with friends hitting a ball around a nice course
That said, I totally suck. Never been much of an athlete. Pretty much a nerdy weakling.
A not very good to fair driver hitting it a max of 175 yards sometimes straight, sometimes to the right
Then going to the 3 on the fairway, that's my problem
I either top it or hit ground to early
Its a victory for me if I have to drive my cart to a ball instead of walk to it
Lately with the 3 just a partial wind up just concentrating on good contact on the ball without killing it usually works for me lately resulting in a ball hit that I have to drive the cart up to rather then walk after a poor short shot
Pretty good with a pitching wedge and an average putter.
I have never bet on a golf course.
I'm not much of a gambler anyway, in Vegas , a low roller.
Glad I found a group of friends that just like to play golf without gambling
We all like to catch a buzz on the course, smoke or drink :-)
I generally score in the 120's. 2 life time birdies, A few lifetime pars
I consider a single bogey a huge victory
Because I don't hit far, I don't lose a lot of balls :-)
As for tennis, let me put it this way; the last time I played, it was with a wood racket - metal ones were still too heavy for my liking at the time.
Yes, you nailed it. It's all supply and demand. There are the same amount of courses in the summer, but a lot fewer people to play them. I remember a par-3 down in Boynton Beach we used to play in the early 90's -- $5 to walk 18 holes during the summer!Quote: Gabes22Perhaps it's that there is not the proliferation of snowbirds and that they have too many courses for the native population
I used to play a couple times a month, but these days, I'm lucky to get out there a couple times a year. I have broken 100 maybe 5 times in my life. Usually 105-110 would be average for me. Occasionally I'll be with a group that bets, but it's usually just a buck or two per hole.
Especially after a little rain or morning dew... not that I ever did anything like that! ;)Quote: RSYou'd be surprised how much those golf carts can drift.
Only need 4 sticks, anyways. Putt, 9, 5, 1w. The rest are for throwing, as I understand it.
Close... I only require: Driver, 4 iron, PW, and Putter.Quote: Face...Only need 4 sticks, anyways. Putt, 9, 5, 1w. The rest are for throwing, as I understand it.
When I was in HS i missed a 3 foot birdy putt, so I soft tossed baseball swung my putter, perfectly hitting the ball, and it broke the putter head right off in to the lake. So I putt with my 4 iron the rest of the day, which I could probably do again.
The 4 iron punch shot is a MUST for anyone's game... Low, straight, and all that needs adjusted is the power =P. If I were to play for money with 1 club, it would definitely be like a 2-4 iron.
p.s. To date I've thrown 3 clubs in to ponds/lakes, not including the broken putter head that went flying (quite far I might add) in to the lake.
...I love golf, I think.
I think you're looking at it all wrong, uk. Golf is a chance to spend 4 hours walking on a beautifully manicured lawn that someone else has to take care of! ;)Quote: ukaserexI kind of wish I did golf. One of the perks of my top tier card at The Palace Casino Resort is free golf. But, it goes unused because the idea of chasing a little white ball around, only to push it farther away once you get close to it - that's just about as silly as driving in circles at high speeds, waiting for an accident.
At least that's how I look at it when my game goes sideways. Plus, all the while, you get to drink beer, smoke a cigar, and drive the little cart.
...and if you get mad you get to break things.Quote: Joeman...Plus, all the while, you get to drink beer, smoke a cigar, and drive the little cart.
...only in golf I think I have some anger management problems.
-Threw a friend's ball retriever into the water hazard, so waded in to get it. Only later did he tell me about the water moccasin
- Hit a golf ball up into a tree where it got stuck
- Broke the club head off trying to hit from behind a tree, but mostly just smacked the tree.
- Played in the extreme windy moments before a thunder storm. From 50 yards from the green I hit the ball with a 3 wood directly into the wind and over the green. It was blown backwards pretty much into the middle of the green.
- Tried playing with a white ball in the snow once.
- Got a real good deal to play every day for two weeks on vacation. Injured my back on the first day -- couldn't play after that.
That's all I can remember for the moment.
We took a 6-pack each in our bags. Wasn't golf without beer, and you weren't allowed to finish the game unless you finished your beer. Pretty interesting courses out West (Wash/Oregon) compared to Iowa, though (where I started playing); cliffs and large hills on most courses instead of rolling fairways and created hazards.

Nailed it.
It's like walking in a huge, well done park. Everything is neat and just-so. There's often ponds and birds and frogs and flowers. You can walk it or tool around in this little cart. And hey, while you're out there, try this little contest of banging this ball into the hole from way back here.
Add some friends and a mess of booze and that's a damn good afternoon. $20 for 18 and a cart round here, and a 4 man is a good 4hr tour. Great value for money.
Edit:

You're on thin ice, friend-o.
;)
Quote: ThatDonGuyhave you seen the price of a decent set of clubs? Okay, maybe using the Sports Illustrated Golf Equipment Issue as a guide may be too high of a standard, but still, what would the cheapest set of reasonably decent clubs at, say, the Taylor Made outlet on the south Strip cost.
Lots of great deals on used golf clubs out there
I've never bought a brand new driver or clubs
A lot of players out there always have to have the latest version of their brands equipment
Due to these guys constantly upgrading their equipment
The used club market is thriving
I buy all my clubs at the large T & D Golf store at the Oldsmar flea market. They sell new but also buy and sell used
Great deals on used.
They will actually let you try out a used for a week, don't like it, come back and trade it
Their used club selection is big with recent models
Yes! Although I have purchased a couple of woods and putters new over the years, the two sets I have purchased have been used -- the first I bought out of the classifieds back in the early 90's -- persimmon woods, Ben Hogan irons, a wedge & putter all for $40, including the bag! Once I got a "real job," I sold those to a friend and bought a used set of Big Bertha knock-offs (actually branded "Big Bomber!")Quote: terapinedLots of great deals on used golf clubs out there

A coach of mine (don't remember which sport, maybe bowling or shooting) once told me, "When you can outplay your equipment, then it's time to upgrade." I haven't gotten there with golf, yet!

There's a "world championship" for players who use only one club for the entire round.

I've heard the saying, "Nae Wind? Nae Golf!", but this is the first time I've heard, "Nae Beer? Nae Golf!"
Betting is dull? ...You're not betting enough. Try $10k per hole. Bet that would spice it up =PQuote: AmelieI play golf, but it is sometimes toooooo boring. Even golf betting is dull. Maybe it isn't mine)) I prefer something more extreme like casino, slots.

There's no way in hell I would award someone money for willingly participating in something like this.

Pretty sure I enjoy the social aspect, and much would be missing without it. Even joining on with another group of strangers as a solo can be fun.
Otherwise, it would be like playing blackjack completely alone, in a grassy field, and losing most of time as well.
You see Uncle, that's why you aren't running the Playboy enterprises. You pay the gal to hit golf balls OFF her butt, (wasn't IN her butt, some of the headline is misleading). Doesn't have to be alot of money, just nuf to get old men excited about teeing up on her cute butt. Fairly simple actually. 'Course there's several different ways this could go really bad in a hurry....;-)Quote: AxelWolfThen you're not doing it right.

<edit> should prolly be entered into evidence in the appropriate venue that $500,000 is way above the going rate one pays to hit a bunny in the butt with a golf club ( at least that's what I've been told by 'trusted' sources ,-)
Wife answered "don't forget your rain gear."
We played at Quail Hollow
About 70 bucks total including online booking fee.
Not bad, 35.00 a player for 18 and a cart 9AM Saturday tee time
Good deal we thought till we got on the course
Not very well kept up.
Not a lot of grass on the PAR 3 tee boxes
The greens had all types of ugly weed spots. Smooth but very ugly looking.
I've seen better looking greens at really cheap courses.
Unlike me, SOOPOO got game. Was quite impressed. He was easily under a 100
I of course did not keep score since I shoot well over a 100.
I am always willing to play golf with any forum member visiting the Tampa area as long as you can put up with my terrible game :-)

For a minute, I was seriously surprised - both at the cost and the reported condition.
Then I looked online, and noticed that the Quail Hollow that I am thinking of (home of next year's PGA Championship) is in Charlotte, not Tampa. Apparently, the one in Charlotte is "members only," unlike, say, Pebble Beach, where anybody with $535 has a chance to play the course.
Went just once this year after at least two years off. Shot 100 and only threw the pitching wedge one time. Meant to toss it up to the fringe but actually sent it full over the green and into the next tee box, like 3 times further than intended. It's amazing how far you can throw when you don't hurt.
Quote: DRichI haven't played in over a year because of some issues that I was having with my back. I had some procedures done and tomorrow is my first test of my back on the golf course. Hopefully I can make it through at least one round without doing any more damage.
I have played after taking time off after minor back injuries. I played better than expected. Likely because of better tempo and less aggressive turn on the follow through. Enjoy your day out on the course. Hopefully the wind will die down and allow for a clearer day tomorrow (less smoke and dust). I am assuming you are playing in the Vegas valley.
I miss all that because I am retired due to old age.
Quote: WizardI voted 100+ but if 200+ were a choice, I would have gone with that. To play golf and not gamble is like playing blackjack for no money.
When I play golf, I always bet on the over. Way, way over.
I probably would have shot a 92 or 93 without the free Mulligan that actually did benefit me, I put a tee shot in the pond. I put another in a different pond a few holes later and quadruple bogeyed that hole.
Anyway, the only reason I post up reasonable scores is because I am pretty solid within seventy yards, except putting, which is the thing I do worst.
Of course, all of this was on a nine-hole course...jk
After an electronic acquaintance informed what her son, a professional caddy, made, I had even more respect for the game's devotees.

Was 91. But 'liberal' rules. Hand on ball almost all second shots due to the dismal condition of the course. I considered the entire course "ground under repair." I was 8 over par after 4 holes, so 91 was a real comeback.
Ed hits the ball straight.... but not much distance. I hit the ball longer... but not much straight!
The most used club in my bag was the 3 iron
I seem to have better shots using the 4 iron rather then the 3 iron
Ditching the 3 iron and going with the 4 if on the fairway when I need distance
We got a top golf facility in Tampa and just checked it out
Really fun. Combination golf/bar /restaurant/night club
Kind of pricy
Me and a buddy went for lunch and 90 min of hitting balls. Bill came to about 100.00 for both of us
