Poker. I don't really enjoy playing anymore in AC because there's too many 20 something guys with their "I need to be like Phil Helmuth" attitudes and "you won't believe what happened" stories. Really, I couldn't care less. I appreciate the resurgence that ESPN created, but those rooms used to be a lot different.
I agree with this. I don't hear that many fish stories, but the one I did was from a guy playing Pai Gow who told me about his ridiculous number of bonus hands (Aces 5 or 6 times, for instance). I actually laughed out loud at him -- don't think he appreciated that.Quote: rdw4potusI'm at a point where I'm bored with poker and BJ, and there is no craps to be played here in MN (or roulette or sic bo, for that matter). I've been playing lots of Pai Gow Poker lately. By lots, I mean 10-15 hours/week. It's amazing how many people claim to have "just" got 5 aces, or a 7 card straight flush, or some other ridiculous hand. On the other hand, I witnessed the dealing of a royal flush with a royal match twice in 4 months this spring/summer. So maybe people do get those huge hands more often than I think. But it's never me, dang it!!
Now, for a gambling story to be interesting there must be a decision made. The more complicated the choice, the better it is for dramatic purposes. All this points to some type of draw poker, where decisions concerning both bets and cards are involved. Second bets is video poker, where choices concerning cards are involved (bets are fixed; ie you don't raise prior to the draw).
And naturally the best audience for such stories are others who play that game. A really good poker story may fall flat on a craps table. Even a good VP story can fall flat at a PGP table.

I get a good kick out of doing the exact opposite. When I'm playing craps, if somebody starts talking about a monster roll that happened just yesterday at the very same table, then I'll say something like, "Yeah, I was here about a week ago, and this got 15 blackjacks in a row! It was amazing!"
