What was the "sure thing" you bet on that wasn't? Any good stories?

Playing BJ at the Mirage, the Tue or Wed before Superbowl, 2015, at a $50 table. I was letting my bets ride three times, playing mainly with house money . . . except

$2,400 on the table after two wins. I let it ride. I'm thinking "I'll win $5,000 (actually $4,800) on this hand.

Draw a pair of twos to the dealer's five.

Take $2,400 OF MY MONEY out of MY POCKET and split the twos. I'm thinking "I'll win $10 Grand (actually $9,600 but in retelling our big wins we always round up)

Draw a Nine.

Look confidently at the dealer's five and pull another $2,400 OF MY MONEY out of MY POCKET. I'm thinking "I'll win $15 big ones (actually $14,400) on this hand."

Take the double down card down.

Hit the other two. Draw an 8. Looking confidently at the dealer's five I'm saying "Twenty thousand smackeroos, here I come (actually $19,200)", I pull yet another $2,400 out of my pocket, toss it on the table, take the double down card down on the second 2 and wait for the dealer to bust.

She turns over the down card, under the five - it's a three.

She takes a hit - Queen - 18!

But I'm not worried. Sheeit, my 20 and 21 are going to beat her 18 out of the pond. And even if one loses, at least I'll break even.

The 2-8 hand draws a six. The 2-9 hand draws a five. 16 on each hand. ARGHH! Lucy pulled the ball out again.

(TRUE STORY)

This isn't the story about the monkey who puts everything in his butt before eating it, is it? I hope not. Who'd be crude enough to even mention that story?

No, that wasn't what I was referring to...

That BJ story doesn't ring true unless I read it incorrectly. I read it the second time slowly.
Maybe different game procedures than I'm used to....

Split 2s vs 5. First 2 gets a 9 and he doubles. Second 2 gets an 8 he doubles. Dealer reveals a 3 for 8 and draws to 18. Both his doubles are less than 18 so he loses.

Sounds like the cards were dealt down so he didn't know the doubles until last.

I may not have made it clear enough that I take the double down card down and don't look at it until after the dealer has played her hand. Thus even when the dealer revealed her total of 18, I still thought I had a chance to win or push. However, if you give me the $19,200 win I already had in my mouth and was chewing on, I'll concede anything you want.

Yep, figured that out.
Not used to double card down, is that just something you request or is it standard in some places?

It's rare on low limit tables. More common on SD, DD and high limit though.

It's certainly more fun to get the doubled hit card down.

I thought the story was perfect. I have lived it with a small variation, and it really was told well. (First time I played with a BJ strategy card. Split 2's to 4 hands, doubled 2 of them, lost all to a dealer 21.) I especially related to the foolish (in retrospect) feeling of reaching into my pocket for enough money to cover all the bets. Auggghhhh. Harrah's Party Pit , 40/hand (so down 240 in 1 hand; a lot for me). Talk about counting chickens....
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

It doesn't get real exciting until you split 4 times and double on all 4 of them!

Try table max 1K.
2, 2 vs dealer 3.
Split 4 ways, doubled 1.
5K on table now.
Hands total 21 (the dbl), 16, 18, and 20.
Dealer draws 3 cards for 20 total.
The result is a push.
I needed another drink.
