Hello,

Just found this forum while looking around the net for affordable Las Vegas accommodations.

Any suggestions where I should post this thread? If so, please advise, thank you! (Have an ad running on CL. Already been contacted by a West African scammer...)

I plan to arrive in LV towards the end of November and need to find temporary (or even month to month) accommodations while I get the lay of the land.

I'm a poker player and don't really require much more than a furnished sleeping room.

I am:

-- in my 50's
-- mindful of personal boundaries
-- more fastidious than an Italian nonna when that level of cleanliness is expected
-- light-footed
-- a poker player
-- a bit eclectic
-- definitely not a weirdo
-- definitely not seeking to be contacted by weirdos
-- a 100% legit human being

If anyone knows of an affordable furnished guest-room, possibly with a separate bathroom for additional privacy, or a casita rental not too far from Downtown or the Strip: kindly PM me. It would be so great to find a safe place to hang my gypsy hat while I get my bearings in Las Vegas.

I would naturally respect a person's home and personal privacy but would appreciate access to wifi, kitchen and laundry facilities. I enjoy cooking and "dining in" from time to time.

I have a somewhat limited accommodations budget but I don't really feel like landing in perhaps a somewhat dangerous and/or questionable motel room off Fremont or The Strip when I arrive. (Have found all the ads...)

I do have excellent personal and business references. I can also provide a recent criminal background check.

Thanks for reading this. Any feedback, advice or recommendations will be very much appreciated.

I haven't set foot in Las Vegas since the mid 80's and know that a lot has changed since I lived and worked there.

Not that I could help you but how long of a stay are you looking for. You can get something like circus circus or freemont for under 40 a night.

Could try airbnb also, bit sure if they do that in vegas

I have looked here before, though my plans changed so I didn't go:

http://www.easyroommate.com/nevada/las-vegas-roommate

They seem to screen their clients that offer places.

I did use Craigslist when I went to Hawaii sight unseen. I had a 33% success rate.

Place 1 was perfect, but what the guy didn't say was that he was losing his house to the bank, and evicted me 1 month in, had already spent my first/last/subsequent and security deposit, so I had to take furniture and stuff to recover any of it.

Place 2 was perfect, was there for nearly a year, but had to return to the Mainland for extended physical therapy and had to let him rent to someone else.

Place 3 advertised well, but the on-site landlord turned out to be a Peeping Tom weirdo, so had to move out suddenly to a place unadvertised I had found.

I suggest you'd do better with a property manager/realtor that handles rentals than I did with CL. Even for a bit more money (that they have to pay the manager/screener).
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Hi, yes, Airbnb does have a LV site. Have checked it thoroughly. I won't have my vehicle. Most reasonably priced rooms seem to be located 10-15 miles from the action, either out in Summerlin or Hendertucky...

Looking for possibly a month or 2? Need to get boots on the ground and then figure things out from there.

Have looked at a "vintage" room at the El Cortez. Problem with hotels like that one and CC is that room rates are reasonable from Sunday to Thursday and then the prices are jacked up on weekends. The online site doesn't quote room prices beyond a 4 day booking.

Plus the " resort fee" which most Strip properties tack on.

From what I've read, The Imperial used to offer reasonably priced rooms to poker players until the renos. I'm still researching options. I think my best bet is to find a furnished room in a private home.

Anyway: appreciate your reply!

Hi,

Thought about contacting a property manager. Would venture to presume that anything available would be out of my price range.

There's also a LV property manager advertising care-taking situations: live-in while the homes are for sale, etc. Sounds pretty sketchy, if you think about it, and I have, so I did not inquire.

Hi again: just checked out the site. Thank you!

Nuttin much available. In addition: Ads are asking for 1st, last, and a 6 month commitment. Not in my wheelhouse at this time.

I take it you're coming to Vegas on a trial to see how well it goes in poker?

There are tons of month to month houses with a private rooms, oftentimes with a private bathroom and entrance. Usually they want about $300 to $400 a month. Casitas will be harder to come by.

Weekly 1 bedroom apartments are about $199 to $240 a week or about $900 a month. They are fully furnished and ready to move in. Most have pools, internet, TV and a Gym. Only ID is required. Because of the connivance, obviously you won't always be dealing with the cream of the crop neighbors. There's many places around Vegas like that, some are not in good locations. Some are further out on the strip where a bus would be very convenient.

I suggest you stay in a weekly for 2 weeks while you search on Craigs list and ask around in the poker rooms for a less expensive option. There's tons of poker players here looking for temporary and long term roommates. You may want to post on 2+2.

Yup, have located some of those properties online. I lived in one of those weekly places back in the day: my car was stolen from there. A scuba diver found it on the bottom of Lake Mead. True Story.

Many thanks for the astute observations.

Have registered on 2+2 but am unable to open a thread there due to "newbie" restrictions which is why I registered here and opened this thread.

Appreciate the excellent feedback I've received from the forum: hopefully I will land somewhere relatively safe whereby I will continue checking CL and put out some feelers in the poker rooms.

Meanwhile, will continue checking this thread and my PM's for replies. As a poker player, sometimes one needs to float a bet on the flop. You never know what can transpire on the turn...

Thanks for your input.

Believe it or not this is exactly how I meet my first 3 new AP friends and partners (I say new but its been 2 or 3 years now) . Someone put feelers up looking for suggestions on places to live and possibly do some AP counting/ poker/VP while looking for a new career/Job.

I had a small place next to me, He didn't like the place but we hit it off and everything fell into place. Another person looking for AP and a place came soon after. Another looking for work and a new opportunity came after that. none has had to find a Job. It's been fun and lucrative beyond my expectations. I couldn't ask for a better group of people and skills who I have meet on this forum.

Just to give you an idea regarding my wish to move to LV:

I live in a medium sized town with one casino and a small poker room. The action heats up during the summer when this tourist town doubles in size...

Once Labor Day hits, the tourist season is over. The usual suspects congregate nightly, passing stacks around. Since we all know one another and everyone's cash game, playing optimal, profitable poker becomes a bit more of a challenge.

The casino closes at 2am. Players generally end up losing a buy-in or two or three, or they sit there dribbling chips away until they catch a hand, double up and go home, even. More often than not, you're forced to get your money in bad with pocket 10s JJs or QQs against the inevitable AA due in no small part (in the case of 10s) to the bad-beat jackpot consideration... (It's sitting at 50K at this time. Aces full of 10s or better.)

Ergo: Winters here are cold, slow and unprofitable if you're a regular cash game poker player. Unless of course you're sitting at the poker table and your Aces full get cracked. I'm always a day late and a dollar short in that regard...

I've decided to give LV a go and see if I can survive the off-season in a warmer locale, where I at least have the choice of playing in a variety of poker rooms, against a fluid cast of opponents.

Those are my thoughts. We'll see what happens.

Is Las Vegas 'the place' for poker?

Supposedly Maryland Live's poker room on the East Coast is swimming with great unequaled schools of fish.

I can't verify that, but I do wonder if one should just assume LV is 'it'

If you pick you're games without much effort the action is just fine. 10 pm to 6 am on Friday Saturday nights are very good. I'm not sure what limits she plays so that's a factor. 5/10 NL are not as good as before. 2/5 and under are fine games in Vegas. The number of people per room and number of rooms has dropped off but no worries IMO. Rigondeaux is the guy she should talk to about poker in Vegas I absolutely respect his poker knowledge.

Hi,

Again, am not so much looking for pools of minnows as much as somewhere warm and comfortable to play poker during the downtime I have in the winter season...

Gets kind of cold in MD too, as far as I know.

Was considering Ft. Lauderdale as well, but have pretty much settled on giving LV a go this year.

I play $1-$2 and $2-$5. Also play the occasional low buy-in tourney. I don't have a big bankroll.

I was going to suggest FL as an alternative, as it happens, though I think there is much more poker in NV. However, I'm told there are many more fish in FL (proportionately), and they don't all require a boat. :) There are approximately 30 poker rooms here, give or take, with more than 400 tables. (source: http://www.pokeratlas.com/poker-rooms/regions/florida )

Vanessa Selbst, among other pros, are reportedly based here. There are quite a few bracelet and tour events over a year's time. And while poker is supposedly waning other places, we have very limited gaming options in Florida, so that drives people who want to play something towards our growing poker base.

Not that I'm a poker expert. Just an interested amateur. Would not want to mislead you about the depth of my knowledge.

I live in Florida. Was considering having an apartment in Las Vegas a couple years ago, as I was there often for a while, and was looking at options, as you are.
