Wouldn't it be more politically correct if we just removed all symbols of past sacrifice just as was done with the confederate flag?

I like your thought process. Regardless of the day, good discussion knows no Holiday. Thanks for your thoughts!

I appreciate your service
The gov. around here has been "off" most of the week, due to today being "the 4th"
Didn't faze her a bit.
Next part of her speech was how she supported American workers. People lapping it up without thinking?
Quote: petroglyphI appreciate your service

I don't know where you live, but here everything (locally anyway, I have no clue about federal government) everything has been running all week. But I live in a tourist town (Ocean City) where this is probably the most profitable weekend (or pretty close to it) of the year for the City, so they want to make sure all of their revenue is still coming in, so the idea of everything being shut down for 4th of July here would be unheard of, in fact probably more local people are working because it gets so busy and crazy and the city gets flooded with people.
But I have no problem with some people having Friday or Monday off this weekend. I would argue that the 4th of July is the most important holiday in America (I am not religious so I don't care about religious holidays), if there is any holiday worthy of having a day off for, its this one.
But the productive class shouldn't have their [the gov. employees] pay extracted from the fruit of their [the producers] labor, plus benefits.
And that is why I predict Walker is the #1 contender, "in a middle weight crowd"
Are you saying all the fed, state any muni workers don't get a paid holiday due to the 4th of July? Really?
Libertarians should appreciate that as part of their effort for less government. More officials should be given more time off. And eventually . . .Quote: petroglyphThe gov. around here has been "off" most of the week, due to today being "the 4th"
Quote:Those who control the past, control the future.
Exactly.
Ths south lost the civil war: get over it.
Independance Day is no lightweight event, no slapdash PC holiday like MLK day.
Shortly before the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independance, John Adams wrote to his wife that commemorating the signing of the Declaration "will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. . .It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."
Now, had the rebels won I suspect there would be similar hooplah, with a racist slant:
"Two for one on nooses, today only. Bullwhips half off."
The yankees kicked rebel ass, and they deserved it: the south's position was indefensible in the modern world.
Politics aside: Let's Celebrate
The flaw in this logic is that you will not be able to retain quality employees without offering certain benefits including paid holidays. I know that for me personally, a bit more money would not be worth the loss of vacation/sick/holiday time. Worker fatigue would set in and productivity would decrease substantially without time off that "someone" is paying for.
Now we can debate if the Government hires the best employees and compensation is commensurate with duties performed but that is a separate issue to discuss.
I do not care one way or the other about the Confederate flag. The only reason that it is even on my radar is the media sensationalism. By the logic that is being applied in this case; we really should stop selling and letting people display the jolly roger pirate flag. Pirates enslaved, oppressed, murdered, stole, ect... yet they are glorified in the media. If you know your history, you would know that the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. This was a war based on economics at the time; but over time has somehow morphed into being about slavery and emancipation.
I do not care to fly a Confederate flag but if you feel that it is about pride and sacrifice of Southern Soldiers by all means go ahead. Would you feel the same way about someone flying a Nazi flag? They lost a war, many Germans died proud and for a cause. I would feel differently as to me it is abhorrent what Nazi soldiers did. I live in the United Stated and will fly only the flag of my nation.
Happy 4th. Time to grill, overeat, and do all other things Americans do on holidays.

I never said anything of the sort. I was speaking strictly of my local city, which I thought that I made clear.
Many corporations have a paid holiday today. Are you mad that Verizon workers have a paid holiday from your bloated phone bill?
I don't know everything about Scott Walker, but I highly doubt that he has advocated removing Independence Day as a holiday...

The fact that most people are celebrating the holiday and aren't interested in sitting at the DMV for example to get a new license is one of the reasons for granting government workers the day off from work. Remember also, government employees pay taxes as well as the rest of the citizens of this country and are supporting their own salaries on holidays.
I am over "it". I am as much a northerner as you are. Born in Portland Ore., raised across the bridge. "Controlling of the future by controlling the past" that I referred to was the "Orwellian" future as described in Hillary's favorite book 1984.Quote: MrVExactly.

The people that won that war, are the same people getting us into the current one.
The past is constantly being re-written, [by the winners]. The only history that most young people will ever be exposed to, will come from the most modern high school book, freshly revised.
The world is becoming beige.

If government workers were allowed to "work" tax free, it would be cheaper for me.

Walker will be the first to say, let the gov workers have a holiday. People shouldn't have to be paid or rewarded to appreciate independence day. They either do or don't, its the hypocrisy that gets me.

Depending where you live you may not have a choice on phone service.
Almost every country in the world has some sort of paid national holiday. I don't see how this is even an issue.
And, for the record, I actually don't get paid time off for July 4th, the only reason I am not working today is because it is a Saturday, every other 4th of July I've worked. And, I don't feel slightly angry that federal goverment workers get time off, or anyone else.
I don't know why you are so upset about this, if you were Jewish and angry that goverment workers get time off for a Christian holiday that would be one thing. But, getting into a big rant over a national holiday is absurd. This is the most justified holiday that there is.

Next time I'm expected to buy someone birthday presents, I'm gonna say, you don't have to be rewarded to appreciate your birthday, you either do or you don't. And if they don't like it, I'll refer them to Petroglyph.
I'm already adding up my savings!
Quote: petroglyphWhat is so great about the 4th of July that all government workers get the day off paid, even if they have to take it on another day, and everyone else gets to pay for it?
Are you suggesting that there should be no holiday days off, paid or not, for government workers? Or did you mean for all workers?
Why should government jobs be any different than regular private sector jobs?
What's next? No vacation time or sick leave?
I have the hardest time communicating with you? IDK why.Quote: GandlerDepending where you live you may not have a choice on phone service.
I will try.... I wrote, "Let me see, do I have a choice" in response to your "do you get mad at Verizon for bloated phone charges". I thought it was obvious, that I had a choice to either not have a phone at all, or I could pick between carriers. The government, I have no choice, they make the rules and collect the vig.

You know, like those who risk everything to start and build a business and create jobs. No benefits, only the knowledge that if they are successful some liberal will tell them "you didn't build it" and other garbage like that. All for the right to not only pay more actuall dollars in taxes if you are successful but also the right to pay a higher percentage of what you make if your long hours and hard work turns into profits.
I guess those on the left who always say hard work doesn't pay off are right. Sadly they have made it that way.
If you or someone you loved flew in an airplane today, thank a controller. No airports were closed.
If you went to a national park today, thank a ranger. No parks were closed.
If you breathed free air and freely expressed your opinion here, thank a soldier/sailor/airman/marine/coastie/n-G-man. They've all been on high alert all weekend (all of the above) maintaining our freedom for a new generation.
Now to the beer and hotdogs.

+1.
No one has to apologize for taking their earned vacation time, - especially those working to provide service to the American public, and on the 4th of July.
Me, I dealt in a casino tonight, the 4th, having gone back to dealing. I also work Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New years Eve if scheduled. Me, I serve the gambling public on Holidays too. I salute Air Traffic controllers, the Military, VA Hospital workers, and the many government workers - and all - who work holidays, too, also providing [admittedly more] important services. ;)
Cannot begrudge anyone who earned their time off and pay, public or private.
Quote: djatcI rolled outta bed pretty late in the afternoon picked up some free play filled up gas in my car then ate some hot dogs. Government might not work today but I sure do. MURIKA
The difference is you (hopefully) made money and the government wile not working, still cost us all money.
The story of life, you better keep working to make it, because they are always going to be there with their hand out to take it! Along with those who have learned the lesson well from them and also have their hands out everyday. While the 4th might have been a good day for them, the 1st is always their favorite day of the month.

I guess you have a choice, but again depending where you live maybe not really. Just as with many utilities. I guess technically yes you can live without gas and electric and water, but lets be realistic...
And, yeah I would imagine so, Western countries are more evolved and generally have better workers rights, so I don't know how that would be a negative.
Though to be fair, in that link you post, America has no required employment leave, and most people would agree America is far less socialist compared to most other Western countries.
I don't get any paid holidays, and I work many (for no extra), but I don't feel slightly disdainful that other people do. Of all of the things to get angry about, this hardly seems like a valid criticism of America.
