I didn't know we had secret adminS (plural). I didn't even know we had one.

When did this happen? after the sale of the site?

I am of the opinion that it is not a secret admin, but a known admin who preferred not to be associated with this act.

The punitive act was taken as a de facto consensus by several admins in unison.

Of course, this is just my theory.

Not that it matters, but just out of curiosity: What is the point of secret admins?

If admins don't want people to know they are online they can set themselves to invisible.

I don't see how being secret can be any benefit at all?

Unless is it for PMs? Like to engage in undercover bets in PMs to see who is reputable or if people are violating rules via PMs? And to engage in PM stings?

Before. At one point maybe 2 years ago, one of the secret admins outed himself and (I think) was removed from secret-adminness.

Regular Administrators don't get, 'paid,' in any formal way. Wizard has been very kind to us in the past, though, such as offering his winnings from the Picks game to the Admins.

I have no idea. On the other hand, appearing to be lurking may be helpful from something starting in the first place. The can only do one or the other at one time.

My opinion is that if someone is going to nuke a member while admitting that it was an alleged offense, the least they can do is identify themselves. The latest nuke seems like quite a step for someone not in green. It's not hard to tell when someone becomes a secret administrator. The changes in their posts are not that subtle. I haven't been wrong yet.

I find it amusing that we have secret mods hiding out there working on a forum that everyone can read. Are the afraid to let it be known they are helping the Wizard? I wouldn't see why that would be the case. Unless there is a whole lot of stuff happening in PMs that shouldn't be, there is not much secret here. If there is a PM problem, it'd be just as easy to report it to a greenie as it is to report a post that needs attention.

Maybe there is more to it than that...

I don't see what the big deal is, really. Having a mod without their name in green could have certain advantages. Like if there's a long thread with no posts by a known mod, someone might try to get away with something.

I'm fine with there being secret mods. Which is good, since my opinion means bupkis :p.

Is there a big deal? People have opinions; those opinions don't count for much here unless you are one of the folks in charge. That is part of the cost of admission...but I think we still should share opinions and discuss things.

The point would probably be that people know when admins are, and are not in the thread. If they're more present some people might modify what they say, or how they say something. It's like having under cover cops driving unmarked cars in some states. If you see a cop car, you go the speed limit. If you don't, most people speed.

There is no such rule but the last time I asked a certain person if they were a secret administrator, a certain other person was not very happy. Turns out I was right on. I just asked in jest, a simple little comment that would have blown right by. I certainly wouldn't want to upset anyone again so I'll have to pass. The Black Ops are everywhere. Not at all. It was a job. No different than my current Casino job or any of my past jobs.

Some people are pretty tricky. Took some serious research and watching and waiting sometimes to catch the good ones. Every job has them though. Cheats at the Casino, players pushing the limits when I umpired. People trying to pull on over on the insurance company (or me) when I did that. Same scoundrels, different locations. :)

This has no advantage over an admin just being invisible. The only benefit I can see is for PM stings. But for that admins can just make an alt account....

It's not me, not that anyone was thinking it was. I tend to not take internet forums seriously enough to want to be a super secret mod, let alone a regular mod.

I do sort of think I should have taken StrictlyAP up on his offer to meet in person and hear his side, except I figured I would have gotten punked, or stood up, or attempted to have been played for a chump, because that's what it looked to me like was happening in that topic. I would have been party to only one side making his case, and that side being the offender.

The only reason I would have wanted to meet was curiosity, and curiosity is what makes you click on phishing emails. I was cured of that long ago.

I wouldn't mind being a secret mod. Perhaps I see the role a little differently - you are an extra pair of eyes for better and more timely coverage of perhaps the more egregious violations or spammers.

I don't envy the regular mods, though. You have to be the right kind of person to handle the attention the job draws.
