Cheap Vegas Flights
Spirit airlines is again offering dirt cheap flights to Vegas. This time $23 one way from 11 cities for $9 fare club members. A couple weeks ago they ran this fare and $34 one ways for non $9 fare club members. Looks like the sale ends Friday October 31, 2014. May even be worth it to buy the $9 fare club membership for $60 if you're not already in it. So total, your cost could be about $106 round trip. Like a couple people said on my last blog post, to avoid the extra fees for baggage, you could just buy stuff once you get to vegas or just pack bare essentials in a backpack for free.

Well, for example coming from the mid west... The flight duration is let's say 7 hours, but the time that passes is only 4 hours, because of the 3 hour time change. A lot of sites will list the time change instead of always also the flight duration. Thus, coming back the numbers will be much larger with the +3 hours for the time change.
So I just go to spirit's site and select one of those cities and vegas and it comes up as $23? Or do I have to enter a code at checkout/etc?

I don't think "scam" the proper word.
But they are completely awful.
A simple Google search will return countless examples of why you should avoid them at all costs.

I've flown from Detroit to Vegas 3 times already on Spirit. Maybe it's crummy. We were jam packed in there the first time. But I flew to Vegas NON STOP, cheaply, safely and on time in about 4 hours. I'd rather save a couple hundred bucks and do that and bring my own peanuts and pop. Lol. And if you learn to pack efficiently, you can seriously save money. One annoyance with Spirit, I must admit is talking to customer service over the phone. They really depend on your doing everything online. Connecting to a human over the phone can be challenging. So if you'd rather pay a couple hundred dollars more and fly on a "better" airline, that's your choice. I'm cheap I guess and would rather save my money for my bankroll

I fly nonstop to Vegas from Detroit 6-ish times a year.
I've yet to fly Spirit. There are much better options. And the flights don't even seem that cheap once you factor in all the extra fees.
I have the Delta AMEX credit card - $95 fee (which is waived for the first year) and it gives you anywhere from 30,000-50,000 free miles when you join which is basically one free flight. And no baggage fees, which is a $300 savings for my 6 flights a year.
I paid well under $300 for my upcoming nonstop roundtrips in November and January. I'll take THAT over Spirit anyday.
I would have to take some time to compare the rival airlines' credit card promotions. They all have them...I don't use them.

Spirit's A319 aircraft feature seats with 28 inches of seat pitch - the least amount of space of all US domestic carriers. Spirit's A319 offers 10 "Big Front" seats which are larger seats at the front of the cabin. These "Big Front" seats offer an additional 6-8 inches of extra legroom and wider seats in comparison to the standard "Deluxe Leather" Economy seats. These seats are available to passengers at an additional fee.

Yeah, I looked at it, first off, spirit doesn't offer nonstop flights to vegas from the airport that I use. And the flights aren't actually that much cheaper. I would "save" $30 - $40, which would go away as soon as you start paying fees for anything.
As far as it being a scam, maybe that's the wrong word, but after looking at all the fees (a lot of which would be a surprise to a typical ploppy), a first timer flying spirit would definitely feel like they got scammed. I mean, $10 to have them print a boarding pass? Holy shit! I mean yeah, you can print your boarding pass at home, but what about the return flight?

Yes I've never flown them. Just seen the horror stories from my friends on Facebook.
My sister and her husband flew them last month to Vegas. It was a disaster for them. They almost didn't get to go. Thankfully there were some nice people on their flight who postponed their trip so they could get seats on the (overbooked) flight.

Also, halfway through the flight, flight attendants come by to collect the "landing fee." If you don't pay the landing fee they crash the plane into the mountains.

If this is your first time, you might want to look up some of other peoples' bad experiences/surprise fees they got hit with by spirit, so you can avoid falling victim to it.

Get on, fly to your destination, get off. You have questions... go ask someone else. You expected more... then go fly another airline.
So pack only ONE small light bag. Use Fedex or UPS to ship your luggage, not them. You get thirsty, wait to get off the plane then find a water fountain. How the fuck are you going to ship your luggage to your casino hotel room? I'm sure they would accommodate that but that would be 1 massive headache.
I can barely stand Allegiant on the other hand. You're so lucky if you have an on-time flight.

Ha ha. Someone should start a thread on how to save money in Vegas as long as it doesn't interfere with gambling. Wear the same clothes all week. Sit on one of the pedestrian overpasses and beg for money. Don't brush your teeth. Don't tip dealers. Oh wait, that's a capital offense around here.
I've made a few trips (prior to getting RFB) spending very little on food since I knew of a few places to get good food for free. I'm not going to post the details on a public forum, but you could basically just walk in, act like you belong, and eat/drink what you want.
And there are plenty of people who wear the same clothes the whole trip and have minimal, if any, personal hygiene.
Trouble is spouses often do seem to like those luxurious rooms on top floors instead of the small rooms with a view of the elevator shaft. Sometimes poker rooms have trouble and have to suggest a player take a break for a shower. I usually take a limited wardrobe because I try to travel light. In Vegas its usually two showers and one bath per day, but if the water pressure is like a fire hose then I'll make those really long showers and get in a few extra ones, particularly if I'm not getting the room comped.
Some people stay in Vegas long enough to have to do laundries but I've never stayed that long. Those people rich enough to have condos in Vegas waiting for them often use a variety of concierge services but the prices are usually outrageously high.
Most women like the free stuff in the room though I still don't know why conditioner and lavender are so important. I usually buy travel size soap, shampoo, deodorants, etc. I don't use Q-tips much but just about every man knows to always pack a package of them because females will always ask you for them. The hotel may provide a shower cap but its usually females who want those things. I do recall one hotel that gave us two shower caps per day: one for the slot maven and one for her suitcase. I like to pack two or three travel tooth brushes since I loathe this eight dollars for a toothbrush at the Venetian stuff.
Even if you are a bit broke you can still do Vegas and not look like a bum. ALL taxi drivers in Vegas use this Oriental Convenient Store that is across the street from a Seven Eleven. A quick stop there from the airport and you can load up on cheapie stuff. There ain't nothing that store doesn't carry. And if a cabby walks in and asks for some item they don't carry; the next time he walks in they will have it. Got a fare waiting? No problem... go to the head of the line or else settle up with them later. With service like that its not surprizing the Seven Eleven is usually empty but they are full.
Spirit Airlines sounds like what you pay for. Not the best service, no amenities, etc, but that's exactly what I want. Get me from point A to B and back to A in one piece and do it for less than anyone else. That's really all I care about. I've never flown them, but if they have $23 fairs, then I might make a little weekend trip with my one buddy who's finally gotten pretty good all around at Blackjack and who's never been to Vegas =D.
